Re: do your parents or in laws want to know about the gifts that you receive?

Just the opposite - my Mom and MIL haven't asked, but I've been telling them when it comes time for other's showers and weddings. They both tend me over generous (beyond what they can afford) and I don't want them stretching themselves thin when it wasn't done by the other party.

My mom is like that. She has to know so she cna reciprocate. The only problem is that most of my relatives are a lot more well off than we are and my mom always feels the need to match or go over their gifts.

Re: do your parents or in laws want to know about the gifts that you receive?

I will never forget when we opened our envelopes my MIL stood over our sholders writing 2 lists. One for her and one for me. To this day she compares. Not only monetary but if his aunt gives clothes (2 shirts) she will do the same back. Its tit for tat. I give what i can afford and what I think is appropiate for the occasion times, places, and people change.

My FMIL has asked from time to time regarding specific people, but she's never pushy about it. I guess it's pretty understandable.

Asking for a LIST is not her business, - asking you here or there what so and so gave you is fine I guess. - I think I missed the part where you said she wanted a LIST !!
would she like to see your bank statements too ??

Dont laugh my MIL gets my bank statements how sad is that. Weve moved twice and it was easier to have everything go to her house.

Oh, she has asked plenty of times, 'How much money do you have?' 'How much did your car cost?'

Re: do your parents or in laws want to know about the gifts that you receive?

yes they did. i didn't mind sharing the info either, we were all very greatful of the gifts people gave us- big and small. of course the big ones got the most attention. i made an excel sheet of all the gifts so I could keep track when I sent the thank yous.

ETA: This was for our engagement party. If the roles were reversed I would be very curious about what my friends and relatives gave my son/daughter as a gift.

My MIL is bugging me.

DH's cousin had an e-party last month. My MIL wanted to know what his parents gave us. She gave him and his fiance the same gift back.

The shower is next month. She asked me how much my comforter and sheet set cost (that is what the cousin's mom gave me)

They are getting married on Nov 7. She wants to know what their parents gave us as as wedding gift.

My mom is surprised that my MIL asked me for my 'gift list'

Anyone else?

edited to add: I do keep track of my gifts, so that I can be sure to reciprocate in kind. I just don't think it's polite for her to ask me what people gave me. She has asked about E-party, shower, and wedding gifts. She wants a list of everything that I receive.

When I first told her that I didn't feel comfortable sharing all of that info, she said, 'fine, then you don't have to tell me what YOUR family gives you. But, I still want to know what my family gives you.'

And, I always tell her that she's in a different boat. The gifts that we receive are from COUPLES, she is a widow. Also, she only has ONE child. So, if a husband and wife couple give us $100, my MIL wants to give $100 to EACH of their 5 children.

my fmil didn't ask for the gift list for the e-party, she asked about certain people, not her family, but from her husband's family. it didn't bother me so much b/c both families (mine & fh's) split the cost of the e-party. but as far as the wedding goes, its 'hands off,' there will be no reason for her to see it.

Yes, my mom wants to keep track. I bet she'll want to take home the envelopes the night of the wedding too...just so 'we don't have to be bothered with it!'

LOL!! My mom tried to take them with her, NOT!! Not to seem overly anxious, but DH and I couldn't wait to get back to our hotel room and rip those suckers open!!
