I think I cracked my diamond

Ok I have no luck.. I actually dont even really care just dont know what to do

Heres the story... I got my e-ring and had it insured with jewlers mutual. Since then the setting had broke twice. Basically they f-ed it up when sizing it for me and caused the metal to be weak.. Anyhow FH got me a new setting and I kept my old diamond.

So now a day after I get the new setting I notice that my diamond looks cloudy in one corner and when you look at it he right way you can see what looks like a crack. I am not sure if this can happen..and I am not sure how it happened. Either the jewler accidentally did it when resetting it, or I did it when I dropped it the other day

regardless I really dont care that much cause you cant tell unless you look for it.. However does anyone know if it can get worse with time?

Also I dont know what to do about the insurance. Since its insured with a different setting I assume I have to get it re-appraised and re-insured.. but now im nervous it will be appraised at less or I wont be able to insure it because of this.

Again not sure if its cracked or chipped, but something happened... FH cant notice it and like i said its not noticeable.. only to me cause I know every little inch of this diamond.. It kinda bothers me but oh well.. what can you do!

Re: I think I cracked my diamond

i think the only way it would be cracked is if the jeweler did it?

Re: I think I cracked my diamond

a flaw in the diamond can eventually turn into a crack. As far as appraisal goes, check to see what was appraised, I have just my diamond appriased, they don't have a picture of my ring. Insurance will cover the crack, it happen to my parents friends but only after 30 years.

I dont think it will cover the crack if the ring that is insured was a different one (i got the ring itself appraised I think with the side stones I used to have).. well the diamond is the same.. but the setting is different ?

Re: I think I cracked my diamond

i know you have to be careful with setting diamonds b/c they can be damaged. i think fancy shaped stones are more prone to that happening. let us know what happens - jewelers mutual may still cover it, read your policy info - you insured the diamond not just the setting KWIM?

Re: I think I cracked my diamond

It's nearly impossible to crack a diamond from dropping it. Diamonds are a really hard substance. If there really is a crack, it would have happened when they were resetting it. I'd go back to the jewelers and see if it's really a crack. Maybe it's just dirty?

I was hoping it was my fault!!! I doubt its dirty they cleaned it and polished and everything. I will have to go back and see what they say. Part of me doesn't want to even bother cause its really in the corner but at the same time I dont want anything to happen in the future because of it. hmm

anyhow thanks ladies

Re: I think I cracked my diamond

Sounds like an internal flaw in the diamond. My friends diamond had that in hers. If it wasn't there before.... well do you think the unthinkable could have happened? Could the stone of been switched?

It's HIGHLY unlikely that you cracked the diamond. Unless the outside is scretched or damaged... I don't see how you could cause damage to just the inside part of it???

The internal flaw that I saw in my friends diamond looks EXACTLY like what you mentioned. Like a cloudy white mark... and I could see someone mistaking it for a crack on the insite.

You should DEFINATELY take it for an apprasial, but go to a different jeweler!

Do you have a serial number in your diamond? I do (they need a magnifying thing to view it... ) but that's how they can tell if it's the same diamond you went in with.

I'm soooooooooo sorry for all of your diamond stress! You poor thing!

Its def my diamond.. It has this little flaw in it that I can ID it with... everytime I give it to the jewler I dont leave until I see that its my diamond. The 'crack' that I think I am seeing is SO tiny that I really am not even upset about it.. I am going to have someone look at it this week and figure out what it is.. maybe it was there before and I didnt notice it because it was in a different setting? Could maybe be a different reflection? Who knows..

Re: I think I cracked my diamond

First off...your insurance will cover it. But...before you contact them I would take it back to the jeweler and tell them it is damaged. If the chip is in the corner then I can with 90% assurance say that your jeweler did it while setting it. Their insurance should cover it. Not yours!

You have a right to get a new setting and then change your insurance policy. However, since the crack was not there before your new setting then the insurance company would most likely go after the jeweler anyway and your premium will go up. If you do it then you don't have to worry about that.

Re: I think I cracked my diamond

Is it possible this flaw/cloudy/crack was always there and just could not be seen the way it was set previously?

I would take it to another jeweler and have them look at it and see.

Also your insurance is more for the diamonds then the setting.

Re: I think I cracked my diamond

I'd take it to a reputable jeweler to have it checked. If they damaged the stone or worse when changing the setting, they shouldn't get away with it!

Good luck!

Re: I think I cracked my diamond

diamonds are an incredibly hard substance..So its near impossible to crack it by dropping it. I would think the jeweler had more of something to do with it..But are you sure it wasn't always there before? I'm also insured with jewelers mutual and as far as I know they will cover damage..so definately check your policy. Good luck!

Re: I think I cracked my diamond

When my FH first got my engagement ring he brought it to be appraised right after he picked it up and found out the jewler cracked the diamond while setting it. The appraiser said that a cracked diamond could eventually get loose and fall out. So just becareful.

Re: I think I cracked my diamond

It is MUCH more likely that your diamond had a flaw that was chemically treated and the 'treatment' was washed out b/c ur not supposed to use most jewelry cleaners on treated diamonds. If this is the case, it needs to be re-zapped with the stuff and u will be back to normal right away!

ITA! There is no way to scratch or chip a diamond unless you rub it against another diamond (or the jeweler did something to it with his machine). Diamonds can cut through glass. They are very strong.

Thants not exactly correct as you can hit a diamond very hard the 'right' way and chip or crack it but it is very rare and usually happens where there is a current feather or crack.
