Saturday Night Jewish Wedding

Is anyone having their wedding on a Saturday evening during the Spring or Summer?
We are having a difficult time since we are getting married in a Temple during Memorial Day weekend and it looks like the earliest we can start the ceremony is 9:30pm. FH is very annoyed.

Re: Saturday Night Jewish Wedding

How does that work exactly? Are you allowed to get married on the Sabbath? Or how does that work?
I was just wondering.

Re: Saturday Night Jewish Wedding

Some Reform rabbis will start the ceremony at sundown (instead of having to wait the hour) but they may not be a way to start earlier...

The good news is that I think people will stay at the wedding late since they don't have to work the next day!

Re: Saturday Night Jewish Wedding

We are, we are having the ceremony at my RH with a Rabbi who was willing to marry us before sundown. You wont find a temple on a saturday that will marry you before sundown.

Re: Saturday Night Jewish Wedding

I dont know any Rabbi who would marry on the Sabbath and to be honest, it would make me question if they did especially since the rules of the Sabbath supercede EVERY other rule and ritual in Judaism. It is the fourth commandment. Here is my take. If getting married in a temple is important to you, then you have to go by the rules that temple sets forth - even if you don't like them. With faith comes sacrifice and compromise.

That being said, my brother got married in an interfaith ceremony in his RH on a Friday night in May BEFORE the sun went down. The just couldn't find a Rabbi to do it later than that. I think they may have started around 5 pm, but people were coming to the ceremony right from work and they were practically walking down the aisle with him.

We got married in the dead of winter in a reform temple at 7:30 pm. That was one of the reasons why we did not get married in the spring or summer. I did not want to get married so late.

This is exactly why we are having it on Sunday I also wanted a Sat night wedding, but did not really want to consider winter-spring when it gets dark earlier

Re: Saturday Night Jewish Wedding

My friends are getting married in July on a Saturday night at 9:30. It's definitely different for me, I've never been to a wedding that late but I'm looking forward to it nonetheless!

Re: Saturday Night Jewish Wedding

We are getting married on a Sunday because of this. Some people will have to take Monday off to travel, but I've done it before and it's not that bad.

Re: Saturday Night Jewish Wedding

You might be able to start a few mins earlier if you incorporate a Havdallah service into your wedding ceremony.
the wedding part would still have to wait until after sundown, but you could go directly from Havdallah into the wedding ceremony.

I think that's a great suggestion! I've always liked the Havdallah services too ...

Oh wow I never thought of that. Would a Conservative Rabbi agree to that? How much longer would that add to the ceremony. I've always loved Havdallah services.

I don't know how much time it would add, but evnme might have an answer on this one. I think its a relatively short ceremony

Re: Saturday Night Jewish Wedding

my boss had the cocktail hour prior to the ceremony so the wedding could start at 8pm. people were louder since they had a few drinks, but everyone really had a wonderful time.

being a Reform Cantor, I can't answer for a Conservative Rabbi, but it can't hurt to ask him/her a few questions...

a Havdallah ceremony would add maybe 10-15 minutes to the service.

The issue you might run into with a conservative rabbi is if they don't drive on Shabbat. That would have pushed our potential for a Saturday night wedding up yet another 1/2 hr or so. Just realized you said you were gettin married in the temple, so if you are using their rabbi nevermind.
