Cookiemonster's wedding review!! Roslyn Claremont Hotel, Burton's, 12th Night, Mittermax, Mya, After Hours, David's Bridal and more!!!
It’s hard to believe that I joined this site less than a year ago and now I’m writing my review. I’ll start by saying I was never one of those little girls who dreamed about getting married. Before I found LIW, I had been in a few weddings and had a pretty good idea what I liked and didn’t like. My husband and I have very similar tastes in most things, which helped a lot along the way! I need to thank Ron, Liz and Kim from the bottom of my heart for creating this site, and the LIW brides, past, present and future who have made it a welcoming community and a great place to share ideas. I learned so much on this site and got so many great recommendations – I can’t thank you enough!I should point out that we live in the DC area so there are some DC vendors and some LI vendors listed. I know there are a lot of LIWers in the DC area so I hope this part is also helpful to you. Please feel free to FM me with any questions.
Rings: Mervis Diamond Importers (DC vendor) A+
MY husband got my e-ring here and it’s GORGEOUS, so we knew we had to come back to look at wedding bands. Mervis is a family-owned business and we worked with one of the sons, Evan. He was so nice and helpful. He never tried to upsell us on anything – I was deciding between 2 bands and there was a big difference in price between them. Evan actually told me the less expensive one looked best with my e-ring. He was right. Highly recommend to anyone.
Dresses: David’s Bridal (Rockville, Maryland) A
I started my dress search at David’s because I knew they carried samples in a lot of sizes and I wanted to get an idea of what looked good on me. I knew I wanted an ivory dress so that helped them narrow down what to bring me. I tried on a few of the David’s brand dresses but the beadwork and fabric didn’t seem that high-quality to me. Then I tried on a beautiful Oleg Cassini ball gown that was made much better, but they only had it in white. I asked the girl who was helping me if she could show me what their ivory looked like, so she brought me another dress to put on just to see the color. They only had it in one size and it was too big so it didn’t look like anything on, but the more I stood there in it, the more I realized I loved it! When she came back I had her clip it so it would look fitted. I fell in love and bought it the next time I was in there, along with my veil, headpiece, and crinoline slip. My advice with David’s is to find a salesperson you like and only make appointments when she is there. I worked with Sharon and she was awesome. I got stuck with someone else once and she annoyed the heck out of me. Go figure (I made sure Sharon got the commission on my sale). I also got my BM dresses there. My BMs couldn’t agree on a style so they got different dresses. Everything came in really quickly in the right sizes and colors. Later on, one of my BMs found out she was pregnant and had to get a bigger size – they exchanged her dress without a problem. I don’t think anyone got anything altered there. The one regret I have is not buying my veil and slip somewhere else – they were fine, but I know I paid far too much for them. I loooooved my headpiece though.
My dress:

Dress Alterations: Yolanda, Distinctive Designs Bridal (Gaithersburg, MD) A+
My best friend (MOH) got her dress from Distinctive Designs when she got married and Yolanda was her seamstress. She told her she did some work on the side and gave her her phone number in case she ever wanted more work done. I called her and fully expected she’d tell me I had to come to her house. Instead, she did everything at the store. In addition to the fact that Yolanda is an AMAZING seamstress, the store treated me the same as if I had bought my dress there. They carry beautiful dresses and a wide range of BM dresses and are very sweet to work with. The only reason I didn’t shop there is because I had already fallen in love with a dress! Incidentally, this is the bridal shop that’s owned by that girl, Sandy, who was on “The Apprentice” a few seasons ago, if anyone watched.
Undergarments: Blums (Patchogue, NY) A
I had originally bought a corset from LIWer Melbalalala (thanks Mel!) but it ended up being too big because I lost some weight and the first place I always lose it is in my chest.
. Mom and I went to Blums when I was home and I got a new corset and a pair of ivory lace boy shorts. You can’t return long-line bras from here so make sure you are absolutely sure of the fit and the way it’s going to look under your dress before you buy! Shoes: Craft Shoes (Commack, NY) A
Some of you may remember I was obsessed with Grace bridal shoes but didn’t want to spend the money for them. This complicated my shoe hunt for a long time. I finally went to Craft because my mom had gotten shoes from them and I found a pair of simple, elegant shoes for $30, on sale, the last one in my size. They dyed them there to match my dress. They had a thicker heel, something I thought was not for me at first, but on my wedding day I was grateful for it because we were standing on the grass during outdoor pics. My mom gave me a pair of Foot Petals and the shoes were actually pretty comfortable – I didn’t take them off at all and they only really started to kill at the end of the night. Craft also dyed my mom’s shoes and a purse that matched her dress exactly.
MOB Dress: Metamorphosis (St. James, NY) A
Mom found a Jovani dress that she loved. It came in quickly and in the right size, and her alterations were easy. They had a huge selection so it was hard for her to choose. She looked beautiful in the dress!
GM Tuxes: Men’s Wearhouse A
My husband bought his tux here and had it altered by his regular tailor, but he had a good experience buying it. He also got shirts, vests and ties for him and the dads from them. The guys were scattered around the country so it helped that this was a big chain they could each go to in their city. Everyone looked great and I don’t think anyone had a problem.
DOJ: Necklace – Garco Jewelers A+, Earrings – 1928.com A
My grandma, who passed away in September, always wore a pear-shaped diamond and sapphire ring. A few years ago she had moved into a nursing home and wasn’t wearing her jewelry anymore, so she gave the ring to me. The 2 of us came up with the idea of turning it into a pendant I could wear at the wedding. Garco is a tiny store in a strip mall on Jericho Turnpike. The owners and jewelers are a couple, Greg and Sophie. They did an AMAZING job on the necklace. It was my something blue, but after my grandma passed away, it was so important to me to have something of hers close to my heart that day. I’m so glad she got to see the finished product before she passed away. I found beautiful, vintage-y teardrop-shaped earrings on 1928.com. They came in quickly w/no problems.
BM Gifts: Whiteaisle.com, Target, Joey New York, Beau-coup.com A
I bought my BMs the oval filigree necklace from Whiteaisle.com because I loved its vintage look. When my order came I noticed one of the necklaces was bent. I contacted Rebecca at Whiteaisle and she responded quickly that I should send back the damaged one and she would mail out a new one. The new one came very fast and was in perfect condition. This website has a lot of beautiful things and I highly recommend them. The only thing is there is a no-return policy on a lot of things so make sure you like something before you order it. I ordered one necklace and 2 pairs of earrings (for me…hehe) before I ordered 6 for my girls just to make sure it was good quality. I put the necklaces in these really cute boxes I saw on beau-coup.com. A fellow LIWer pointed them out in a post – I’m sorry I can’t remember who because they are really cute! I also bought my BP each a small watercolor drawing and chocolate when I was on a business trip in Europe. Then I got pashminas for the girls at Joey New York on 8th Ave in the city. They were $4 city pashminas so I wasn’t expecting fancy, but they came individually wrapped and were actually pretty high quality! I got them in an ivory color that looked great against their burgundy dresses and they came in handy when we took outdoor pics. They have them in about a million colors, along with slippers and other useful stuff. At the last minute, I added these cool foot spa kits I found at Target for $6.99 – some were pedicure kits and some were massage kits. All of them came with comfy flip-flop slippers.

Pashminas:
GM Gifts: Geoffrey Beene outlet, Tanger Outlets A-
My husband got his guys each a nice leather wallet from the outlet. They get an A- only because he had to get some in brown and some in black because they didn’t have enough. He filled each wallet with gift cards from places like Home Depot, Starbucks, and Circuit City. It was fun watching the guys open the box and then realizing there was more than just a wallet inside!
Hotels for OOTers: A
We blocked rooms in 3 hotels because by the time I called, no hotel had a huge block to give me. I also wanted to give people some price options. So we had people staying at the Fairfield Inn in Syosset, the Residence Inn in Plainview, and family and some friends at the Roslyn Claremont with us. The managers at all 3 hotels were very nice and accommodating, but I have to give special props to the staff at the Fairfield. We showed up with our OOT bags and handed them over. They immediately went to work to see who had checked in already and who hadn’t. For those who had already checked in, they offered to bring the bags directly to their rooms. Then, it turned out that 2 families who said they were staying at the Fairfield were actually staying at the Residence Inn. The Fairfield staff not only called Residence Inn to confirm the reservations before we drove all the way there, they even gave us directions on the easiest way to get there from where we were. This hotel is very well run and very nice – I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking to block rooms in the Syosset area.
Rehearsal Dinner: Piccola Bussola Ristorante (Mineola, NY) A+
We worked with Tony and he was SO nice. Basically he let us pick anything off the menu or anything not on the menu – one chicken dish, one fish dish, one vegetable dish (in place of the veal they usually offer) a salad, some veggies for the table, 2 pastas, and gorgeous Italian desserts for a package price that included wine. We went there for dinner just the 2 of us before the wedding to try out the food. It was a Saturday night and the place was packed, and Tony was running around. There was some mixup with our order and it never got put in. Tony found out and went back to the kitchen and cooked it himself! We got free dessert and coffee for the mixup and Tony came and sat at our table to answer all of our questions. The night of the RD, the restaurant was packed but we had our own room so we didn’t even notice. We got everything we asked for and more, and the wait staff was friendly and extremely helpful. They served huge portions and everything came out hot and delicious. The meal was served slowly so we had time to talk – we were there for more than 3 hours and they never rushed us. We got a ton of compliments on the food and the overall service. Highly recommend.
Invitations: Knot to be Forgotten (Franklin Square, NY) A
Invitations were my least favorite part of the entire wedding process. I hated almost every minute of looking for invitations. This was because everything I loved was thousands of $$$ and everything else I found something wrong with. My obsession was C’est Papier invitations. In desperation I posted here to see if anyone knew where I could find them for less. MrsDaniRella came to my rescue and told me about Knot to be Forgotten and an invitation designer who used to work for C’est Papier, Michael Gitelle, who did similar stuff. My big priority was finding very, very high quality paper that looked like linen, and not spending an arm and a leg. We found a very unique invitation that we loved and we got tons of compliments on it. We worked with Gina at KTBF and she was extremely nice and helpful, even answering our questions at weird hours, making her cell phone # available, etc. We got a lot of compliments about our invitations.
Invites:

Invite Calligraphy: Inkspun.com A-
We worked with Bill – he was very nice and the invitations came out great! The only reason he gets an A- instead of an A is that while his website says they will return the finished envelopes within 48 hours, it should say 48 “business” hours. It ended up taking about 4 days to get them back and we were kind of down to the wire. The stress associated with this was my fault for taking so f’ing long to pick an invitation

Huppah: Corinne Soikin Timor, artist (Westhampton, NY) A
We decided we wanted to have a huppah made for us instead of going the traditional flowers route. We thought it was such a nice idea to have something we could hang in our home and pass down as a family heirloom. My mom found Corinne, I think on Google – her website is www.huppah.com. She makes huppahs, tallit, Torah covers, etc and her work has been in synagogues and museums around the country and in several other countries. She worked with us to create something beautiful that we will have forever. She’s very passionate about her work and it was really cool to go to her studio and have her explain the process to us. We got the smallest size and it was still enormous. It can get pricey, but so can flowers on top of a regular huppah, and this we get to keep forever. She makes the fabric so that you can put a rod inside to hang it up afterwards. We got tall wooden curtain rods and finials from BB&B and used white pool umbrella stands to support them. It worked great. The only challenge was hauling all of it to the hall!
Ketubah: Ketubahketubah.com A
We chose “Blue Dawn: Silver Edition” by Robert Saslow. We worked with Shira on making sure the wording was right and she was always very helpful. When the ketubah came in, I discovered my Hebrew name had been spelled wrong. Shira immediately called the artist and he made a new one for us. It’s beautiful and we love it.
Our ketubah:

Yarmulkes: Yarmulkes.com B
I was somewhat disappointed in this vendor but it’s partially our own fault. We didn’t want to spend a lot on anything fancy, we just wanted an ivory satin yarmulke with our names stamped on the inside in gold. The yarmulkes took FOREVER to arrive and the company was very unresponsive when I contacted them to find out where they were. Also, right after we placed the order, someone from there called me because he had a question about the order. He had left me a voicemail, so I called him back. He was very short with me on the phone and kept me on hold for almost 15 minutes. I was stuck in traffic at the time and it really irritated me. Anyway, the final product was the right color and our names and the date were right, but they’re not the greatest quality. This is where I say it was our fault for looking for a “base model,” but if I could do it again I’d shop around a little more and find someplace that offers samples. Thankfully I don’t think anyone noticed except me.
Honeymoon: Westin Resort, St. John, USVI, booked with Liberty Travel (Levittown, NY) – Ellen A+
My family has been using Ellen for years to book all of our big vacations. We came to her looking to book something fabulous without breaking the bank and she really came through for us. We knew we wanted to go to St. John but we had a feeling most of the honeymoon packages offered at the fancy hotels there were a complete waste of money. Ellen got us an oceanview room at the Westin for 8 nights for half the price of the package, which didn’t really include much extra to begin with. For the things we wanted to do, like water sports, it was cheaper to pay for them a la carte and do them on our own schedule. We had an amazing, amazing time and when I have time I will write a separate review!

Florist: Flowers by Burton A+++++++++++
I can’t say enough good things about Burton’s. My flowers were exquisite and arrived exactly on time. My gorgeous bo-k literally took my breath away when it was delivered, and the centerpieces were perfect. They had even added more calla lilies after I asked them to when we saw our sample. The ceremony setup was exactly what we wanted, and they threw in extra bouts, rose petals and a toss bo-k. The centerpieces we took home lasted more than a week and the guests who took some home really loved them. We visited Burton’s and a whole series of other florists on recommendations from LIWers. Burton’s came in with the lowest price and they were very nice. Since I knew exactly what I wanted and flowers weren’t the most important thing to me, I didn’t really have some grand “vision” I needed them to match. I wanted simple mini calla bo-ks for my girls, a calla and rose bo-k for me, and centerpieces to match a picture I had found. My hall provided votive candles for the tables. They wrote down exactly what I wanted. It turns out mini callas are a VERY expensive flower and some florists wanted to charge me $100 per bo-k for the girls even though I specifically wanted small bo-ks (15-20 flowers per).
Burton’s policy to charge by quantity rather than flower type really helped me out. I would recommend Burton’s to anyone – I was extremely impressed with the quality, the attention to detail and what we asked for, and the nice people we worked with. We worked mainly with Jill and a bit with Mike. They were actually the people who recommended St. John to us! So happy with them, I can’t even describe. My AMAZING bo-k sitting in water at my parents' house the day after:

DJ: After Hours Entertainment A+
After Hours, and Phil, the DJ we worked with, did my best friend’s wedding last year. He threw a great party and we wanted to go meet with him. He was always very nice and accommodating, and he was extremely well prepared for our appointment. The thing I like best about him is he doesn’t do the typical “DJ persona.” We met with several other well-known vendors on this site and Phil was the one who suited our tastes the best. We had a showcase with another vendor that made us feel like we were at a bar mitzvah. Been there, done that. Twice! ? The things that were most important to us were: a good mix of music (we have really eclectic taste), a reasonable volume, and nobody pushing people to dance. Since our families and friends are spread out all over the country, we knew that there would be people at the wedding who hadn’t seen each other for a long time, and may want to spend the night talking and catching up. We told Phil that we would not view it as a bad party if only a few people were dancing at a given moment. He said no problem, and was true to his word. He worked the crowd when it was appropriate, and stayed very low-key the rest of the time. He and his DJ played everything from Frank Sinatra to Jimmy Eat World and we had all kinds of people dancing. They played all of our must play songs and got all the special song requests exactly right. Best of all, the volume was good for dancing but not so loud people left with no voice from screaming across the tables. I highly recommend Phil and After Hours.
Klezmer Band: Klezmer Connection A-
We decided we wanted to do something really unique for our ceremony and reception and have live Jewish music. My dad found Klezmer Connection on the internet. They are based in Westchester and you can hear samples of their music on their website, www.klezmerconnection.com. I worked with Michele – she is extremely nice and very passionate about her work, but can be hard to reach. I had to really stay on her to get her to communicate with our DJ and cantor about the ceremony and reception plans. The musicians were great – they were very talented and added a very special and unique touch to our ceremony. They played regular cocktail hour music for us, then did a very enthusiastic half hour of hora music at the beginning of the reception. Michele worked the crowd showing people how to do the dances. We got a lot of compliments from people who said it was something they had never seen done before, and we had everyone dancing. 30 minutes felt like 5 and by the end everyone was laughing and having a great time.
Photography: Twelfth Night A+ so far
Infinite thanks to JIFFY for recommending Twelfth Night to us. They have been nothing but a pleasure to deal with from day one. At our first meeting, we were blown away by the samples we were shown, and were very happy to see packages that didn’t include albums and printed proofs. We want a big album with tons of pics and a creative layout and it’s really nice to have the option to take some time deciding what we want rather than having to pre-pay for it. And Dom’s relaxed style was something we knew we could really work with. We ended up using Dom and Anthony – Dom did “before” pics with me and my girls and Anthony was with my husband, and then stayed for the reception. They took tons of pics and were both incredibly nice and professional. We hardly knew they were there sometimes! Also, we did some outdoor pics at the Roslyn Duck Pond (aka Gerry Park) before the ceremony and it was pretty chilly out. They made sure to make good use of the time so we wouldn’t get chilly. We won’t see the proofs for a little while, but I was really impressed with the types of shots they set up. They were really creative with the space inside the hotel and at the park. I never felt like we were doing “standard poses” even though we still got all the normal wedding shots. I can’t wait to see our pics!
Video: Mittermax A+ so far
The owner of Mittermax is a friend of Dom’s and Dom made a referral when we asked him about video. We saw a sample Mittermax video at the Twelfth Night studio and were really impressed with the high-quality editing and sequences. We got Travis’s contact info from Dom and called him right away. He sent us 2 more samples, one each for the 2 videographers who were available for our date. We decided we liked Ed’s work better and picked him. On the day of, Ed showed up right on time and was a pleasure to work with the entire day. He was friendly and funny and unobtrusive, which is hard to do with a video camera! We had so much fun with the two photographers and Ed when we finally got the whole bridal party together before the ceremony. He was also really on top of things at the reception – every time I saw something that I thought “I hope that gets on the video,” I’d turn around and he’d be there. We haven’t seen the video yet, obviously, but I’m sure it’s going to turn out great.
Hair and Makeup: Mya, Cosmetic Artistry A+++
Mya is amazing. She is so sweet and such a calming presence, which is exactly what I needed on the morning of her wedding! When I told her I had 7 girls who wanted hair, makeup or both done that morning, and we were doing pictures before, she was up for the challenge. We started bright and early at 7 AM – she was right on time with a smile on her face and got right to work. Every one of my BMs looked amazing – so much so that the ones who hadn’t wanted makeup done decided to get it done because the others looked so great! Everyone’s hair and makeup stayed put all day, even with tons of dancing and a few pictures outside in the wind. My hair and makeup were exactly like my trial and looked flawless. Mya was reasonably priced and so great to work with. Even with 7 of us, we were ahead of schedule all morning, and when the photographers came at 11, everyone was done and ready to go. The only bad thing was that I was putting my slip and stuff on in the bathroom when it was time for her to leave, so I had to say goodbye through the door and didn’t get to thank her properly. I highly recommend Mya to anyone.
Ceremony, Reception, Wedding Night: Roslyn Claremont Hotel A+++++++++
I first saw the Roslyn Claremont on the LIW vendor pages and thought their ballroom was beautiful. I liked the boutique hotel atmosphere and the fact that the ballroom and CH room were on a separate floor away from everything. I also liked the prospect of having my wedding at a hotel, where everyone could stay the night before and have everything there and not worry about weather or anything else. The majority of our friends and family (and us) are from OOT, so this was perfect for us. The Claremont is very different from a catering hall – they only do one affair at a time and it’s not huge (I think the room holds about 200 max, and it would be a tight squeeze). We had 125 guests and it was perfect. The dance floor is in the middle of the room so you can see everything from any vantage point. We went there in January and met with Chris, the BM. He was incredibly nice and very accommodating because we were from OOT. He even held our date for us for over 2 weeks while we looked at other places. After we booked, Chris always answered all of our questions quickly and with a smile. He really knows the business and it was a huge statement for us to learn that he himself had been married at the Claremont. He gave us great recommendations for the menu and was quick to accommodate all of our requests. Before the wedding we had a nice tasting dinner in their restaurant where we got to try a bunch of different entrees and desserts…yummy!! On the day of the wedding, everything was seamless. Our maitre d’, Pedro, was AMAZING – he seemed to be everywhere at once. They coordinated everything with the vendors perfectly, down to the last detail. My dad even pointed out that our band and DJ didn’t even have an extension cord visible from their setup. Everyone’s meals were served like clockwork – if people were out dancing when dinner was served, they got back to their seat to find their meal had been covered so it would stay warm. The food was fantastic – we got so many compliments it would be impossible to restate them all. They were very accommodating to making special meals for our vegetarian guests and kids’ meals for our small guests. The cocktail hour was perfection – tons of choices, and everything was delicious. We stayed in the bridal room for a little while after the ceremony, and when we got downstairs it was awesome to see everyone talking, meeting new people, and enjoying all the amazing food. My bridal attendant, Pat, was fabulous. She seemed to know what we would need before we even realized we needed it. She made sure we had food throughout the day as we were getting ready and taking pics, helped me with my dress, brought us a huge plate of cocktail hour food to the bridal room so we wouldn’t miss out on eating it, made sure our gifts stayed together and everything was brought to our hotel suite at the end of the night, and was incredibly nice about everything. She helped calm me down right before the ceremony – I caught a glimpse of the picture of my grandmother that was on the card table and almost lost it, and she was right there with a kind word to help me relax. She even gave me a few Tic Tacs so our first kiss would be minty fresh! ? The next morning, we had a breakfast at the hotel for some of our OOT guests and family – after working all night the night before, Pedro was our maitre d’ again and again, did a fantastic job. Pat had made sure the top of our wedding cake had been brought to our suite after the wedding. In the morning, we realized we’d never have room for all of it and decided to take it to the breakfast. Pedro made sure it was sliced and served and left us a piece to freeze – much more manageable! The breakfast was a buffet and nothing was ever empty. People really enjoyed it. The hotel itself was great – the rooms are beautiful and the staff was very friendly. People were congratulating us and doing anything and everything to help us. There were a few small problems with rooms that were immediately corrected and compensated. It’s a small, intimate setting and we had a great time hanging out and relaxing with family in each other’s rooms. Before the wedding, we worked with Valerie on everything to do with our room block – we got a block of 15 rooms plus a honeymoon suite included when we booked (only the HM suite was free though). She was super nice and helpful whenever we had a question. Everyone’s reservations were perfect and nothing fell through the cracks. The suite we had was spacious and comfy. After the wedding, they brought us a bottle of champagne and a platter with cheese and fruit. During my planning, I hardly ever saw anything about the Claremont on LIW – it’s a fantastic venue and the staff is incredible. To say we were impressed is an understatement – I can’t say enough good things about it. I would highly, highly recommend it to anyone who is having a small to medium sized affair and wants something very classy, elegant and understated. The Roslyn Claremont is responsible in large part for us having nothing but happy memories of our wedding weekend for the rest of our lives. I hope to be able to go back there someday.
If this is what they do for dessert, how can you go wrong???

Thank you for reading my review! I’ll post more pics when I figure out how…
