How do I figure out tax and gratuity on a $pp quote?

I have been calling around to get some quotes before I go in person, because I have a limited budget and don't want to waste my time going to places I will fall in love with and then can't afford. How do I approximate all the extra charges (ex. tax and gratuity) to make the per person quote more accurate?

Re: How do I figure out tax and gratuity on a $pp quote?

just add 30% to be safe. its a more conservative estimate. but with maitre'd tip, its probably pretty accurate.

Re: How do I figure out tax and gratuity on a $pp quote?

Get your $pp quote and multiply it by the number of people you plan to have. Then add 20% (most halls charge 20%, some charge 18%) of that number, then another 8.625% (tax) to that number. That should be your total.

i dont think you do tax on the service charge do you?

I think you would do pp x # of people x 20% = X

then pp x # of ppl x 8.625% = Y

x+y = total

Some halls tax the service charge.......they call it a service charge so they can get away with taxing it

I know NRC taxes it.

I would say......

PP rate x 8.875% = Sum
PP rate x 20% = SUM

Then

add the tax sum and the gratuity sum to the pp flat rate.

Like this....say Im paying $75pp.....

$75 x 8.875% = $6.65
$75 x 20% = $15.00

$75.00 + $6.65 + $15.00 = $96.65 per person

You never tax the gratuity!!

HTH!!

edited cause I had the gratuity wrong =)

Re: How do I figure out tax and gratuity on a $pp quote?

I believe our service charge is taxable, so for us it was

PP * 20%= X

(pp+X) * .08875 (8.65%)= Y

pp+X+Y= total PP

so for us it was 59 PP, so it came to

59* 20% = 11.8

(59+11.8)*.08875= $6.28

59+11.8+6.28= 77.08 ultimate cost per person

Edited with new tax rate

Re: How do I figure out tax and gratuity on a $pp quote?

if the RH calls it a service charge it is taxable. If they call it a gratuity , they do not tax it. So see what the RH does.( Larkfield did a gratuity so they did not tax it.)

Now the formulas you have been given account only for the 18% / 20% gratuity/service charge. you should also allocate $$ for maitre d' TIP. the RHs usually reccommend betw $3 and $5 per guest for that. It is given to maitre d' but he supposedly shares it with the kitchen staff.

and don't forget the tip for the bridal attendant(s). I don't know if you want to include that or leave it in the other pile of 'all the tips for everyone else that day'

It's not that easy. Some places include 'everything' while others charge for each add on. You really need to sit down with each hall and figure out what you want and then negotiate on price.

There are some places that offer full packages for weddings, 10k for everything. That may help keep your budget down

This is what my hall did to come up with my total.

Most places do service charge and then tax.

Also, the tax rate only changed for NYC.

Re: How do I figure out tax and gratuity on a $pp quote?

Also...make sure that when you call and get a price quote that they specify if the tax and gratuity is included. When I was calling places I just assumed it was not and then I started asking and realizing that some places give you a quote with it included. If they don't, then ask them and they will give it to you so you know exactly how much it is.

HTH!!
