If puppy pees on the blanket in his crate...
should I remove it and put a new blanket down or should I leave him in there for a while? The reason I'm asking is because I know they don't like to use their crate to pee but he's done this a lot lately. I was wondering if I leave the blanket in there will that make him uncomfortable enough so he won't do it again?

If you leave it in there he might assume its ok to continue it. Puppies generally do not learn by negative association. How long is he in the crate for? Generally if he goes in the crate its because he had to, he couldn't wait anymore.

He's in there no longer than 4 hours and then I go there during my lunch to let him out of his crate and there is always pee on his blanket.

Sometimes they can't even wait 4 hours when they are little. Don't worry. It will get better. I used to go home at lunch and Chewie would have peed in the crate too. I would remove the blankets though. Soon enough he will hold it til you come home at lunch. We stopped coming home when Chewie was 7 months old. He can hold it all day now.

IF the crate is too big, that rule won't apply.

NO....don't change the blanket....Take it out completely. We had the same prob. Our vet and trainer said that blankets, pillows, and large stuffed animals in their crate encourage peeing. Lo and behold we removed the blanket and she got soooo much better. Don't know why this happens though. You can try to reintroduce the blanket after she is completely potty trained....if she pees on it again then just remove it. I know what you're saying....you don't want her sleeping on the crate floor, I said the same thing, but I had to do it.

I think it's the scent that stimulates the desire for them to pee. It's very hard to remove urine smell from pillows, blankets, etc. I use a couple of cups of baking soda in the wash but I heard vinegar also works. Nature's Miracle makes a laundry detergent, but I'd rather buy him toys! Unless you are using the blanket for warmth these days, it may be a good idea to leave the crate without it. Scooby, though, wants something warm to rest on.
Good luck.

Re: If puppy pees on the blanket in his crate...
i had this same problem with my american staffordshire bull terrier. he would pee on his blanket and then push it to the corner of the cage and sleep on the bottom of the cage. i took the blanket out and he then realized that if he piddled in his cage he was sitting in it. so needless to say after a few trys he stopped going in his cage all together. now his blanket is back and no problems.

I am not 100% sure becuase we didnt crate train Lucy. But I would say take the blanket out because when Lucy did have accidents in the house I made sure to do everything possible so that the scent would go away because if they can catch the scent they tend to think its okay.

Re: If puppy pees on the blanket in his crate...
we went throught the same exact thing with Golem - he's 5 mos and just stopped peeing in his crate during the day last month. Sometimes it varies from puppy to puppy how long they can hold it - Golem had a pretty weak bladder for a while there and I was washing his crate linens every day!!
We just threw old t-shirts in there for easy clean up bc he was also in the crate all day and wasn't able to hold it that long. We also tried removing everything, but he still wasn't able to hold it either way, and with no blankets, he was still peeing, but was now sitting in his pee which I did not like at all... It just takes time for them to learn to hold it for long periods of time. In the meantime, please DO take the soiled blankets etc. out and wash with Nature's Miracle (they maek a laundry detergent - very good investment!) so the scent is removed. You pup might still pee in the crate, but it's most likely bc he can't hold it yet. I don't think it makes a difference if there's blankets in the crate or not -if they can't hold it - they can't hold it. Good luck, and be patient - this is just a phase that will eventually end!!

Re: If puppy pees on the blanket in his crate...
I put the blanket in half the crate and he doesnt ever pee on his blanket or in his crate except overnight and then he pees on the part not covered by the blanket...my vet said that you should ignore it for 20 minutes to a half hour and then take it outcause the smell when they pee....if you catch them in the act you are supposed to yell NO OUTSIDE and then take them right out.

Re: If puppy pees on the blanket in his crate...
leaving it in there lets him know that it's ok to pee there. Is his crate too big for him? That is the major reason that a puppy will go pee in the crate. It's instinct for them NOT to go potty where they eat/sleep.I would also NOT even put another blanket in there until he stops peeing in there. When is he peeing? at night? when you leave for work and he is home alone?
is it because he can't hold it or out of spite? Has his routine or environment changed recently? These things will throw a puppys' bathroom habits off

Re: If puppy pees on the blanket in his crate...
He mostly pees in his crate after I go home to feed him around 12. Between 12 and 3 there usually is pee in the crate. I think maybe it's out of spite because I have to leave to go to work again.

Re: If puppy pees on the blanket in his crate...
Roxy was doing this and we were told by the trainer that the crate needed to be smaller, they should only have enough room to turn around and lay down and we took out the blankets until she stopped going in her crate. If she had an accident i took out the blanket and now she holds it. The trainer also said that they should be able to hold their urine an hour more than how many months the dog is. So if you pet is 4 months they should be able to hold it for 5 hours.Welcome New Vendors
