OUR AMAZING FALL WEDDING! 11-7-09, Rockville Links, St. Agnes, Nicole D’Angio, Lisa Bari, Modern Wedding Photography, Lilettes, David’s Bridal, East Williston Florist. LONG REVIEW WITH TONS OF PICS!

OUR WEDDING WAS HANDS DOWN, THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE :)
Everything went right on that day. Okay, so the priest called us the wrong name when we were announced, and my cake had a weird web thing around the middle tier. BUT NONE OF THAT MATTERED AT ALL COMPARED TO THE RIDICULOUS AMAZINGNESS THAT THE DAY BROUGHT. I was so amazingly happy that day. I think you can tell from the huge smiles in all my pictures that it was truly the most special day, and most special gift from my wonderful and generous parents.

I got a lot of sound advice as I prepared for my wedding. This review is going to be totally long-winded, but I wanted to pass on important information that might be able to help future brides!
It must be said, here is my legalese disclaimer: The opinions here are MINE, and mine only. You may not agree or have had the same experience, but I can only speak for me!!!
LI weddings
I came to this site kinda late in the planning process, so I didn’t get as much time to get to know many other 2009 brides! But either way, the wealth of information on this site is really phenomenal. I learned a lot from reading what other girls did, and also, really enjoyed reading their reviews – that is why I wanted to be so detailed on my own!
So here we go! Here are the details that made my day amazing:
Engagement Ring: Helzberg Diamonds, Roosevelt Field Mall, Grade: B+
I knew I wanted a three stone right, so I told DH that, but at first I wanted round. However, he snuck around for weeks, and ended up choosing a 3 stone, emerald cut style. I love it! Helzberg has good prices (but some friends that are jewelry buffs say you can do better elsewhere on prices) but I love that there is a lifetime upkeep plan where I take my ring in every 6 months to get it specially cleaned. When it came time to choose wedding bands, my setting (which is pretty high) didn’t look right with the eternity band styles they had, so I chose to move my e-ring to my right hand and get a thicker diamond band for my wedding band. That way both hands look pretty ?
If you need a very large selection, Helzberg might NOT be right for you. They have a lot of nice stuff, but sometimes, I felt like I wished I had more to choose from. However, I’m really happy with my rings and with the service at Helzberg. We went back 3 times before I finally chose my wedding band, and they helped me patiently each time.
Sorry about the weird pics, my nails are all chipped and I didn’t get any close ups at the wedding!!
E-RING:

WEDDING BAND:

Invitations: Dorothy Goldsmith Printing Grade: A+++++++++
My bridesmaid’s mom owns this company. She KNOWS her stuff and was able to find us the perfect invitation, advise us exactly on how to word it, and every other single little detail associated with the wedding. We were in and out in a half hour, and we got SO many compliments on our invitations! I love love loved them.

THE DRESS: Lilettes Bridal – A+ for sales, A- for alterations
I chose a dress back in January, but I knew I wanted to lose some weight, so they told me to come back in March and get measured. Well, I went back, and I just didn’t feel the same “wow” factor about my dress. It was very plain, and I like flashy stuff haha. So the next morning, I called, and went back to try on about 15 more gowns. My original gown was “Grace” by Sophia Tolli – a gorgeous gown, but just not for me.
Lydia picked out the gown I ended up choosing. It was something I would have NEVER picked up off the rack, but once it’s on, it’s so flattering and gorgeous! I was choosing between this gown and one way less “bedazzled”, and the other just couldn’t match the “WOW” factor of this dress.
Now when you order your dress, ladies who haven’t yet, realize, you’re kinda taking a leap of faith, esp if you are planning to lose weight. A good consultant will advise you on what size to order. Unless you fit into the sample size in the store (I was not so blessed), you will have to get a “rough” idea of what your dress will look like on your body. DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE NUMBER ON THE TAG! (well, size at least, the price is another story!) Bridal sizes run way bigger than a normal dress you’d purchase at the store.
The dress was supposed to come in around September, and I was called on 9/24 that the dress had arrived. I was SO freaked about my first fitting – I’d been worrying about it ALL summer and working my butt off in the gym. When all was said and done, I’d lost about 20 pounds from when I ordered the gown. The dress fit perfectly; it was just a little big.
I think this happens everywhere, but the cost of alterations *****. PLEASE notice that the cost of alterations doesn’t always cover the bustling of the gown, which MUST be done if you don’t want to be dragging your train around all day. So even if they say “alterations are capped at $295”, the bustle will incur an additional, inevitable cost. All in all, I ended up paying $500 in alterations. But honestly, to me, for the gown to fit perfectly, I would have given them whatever they wanted! However, you can tell that the alterations manager at Lilettes wants to charge you every cent that she can. She is not super friendly.
The seamstress herself was SO sweet. She is from Turkey and there is a language barrier, but she knew her stuff so I could care less. When it came to a communication issue about the bustle, she brought in another person that spoke both Turkish and English, so that was fine. I am super busty and I didn’t have to wear a bra with this dress because of the amazing corset back!!!!!!!!
On the day of the wedding, the dress was the SH*T. I was obsessed with it and I got so many compliments. Thank you Maggie Sottero! The style name is Krystalyn. I’ve shown her e the stock photo of the dress, and then my fittings and eventually, me on my wedding day. I did NOT get the dress in white. The color was considered Pearl with Champagne Accents. It was EVER so slightly blush. I am glad I stuck with the sample color!
THE VEIL: Ebay, seller venus_veils Grade: A+
I noticed when I tried on veils with dresses at Lilettes that the price tags were very high. I hate feeling like I’m being ripped off, so I went into the city to look around in the garment district. When I found a plain double tiered veil (no lace or anything) and was told it was $225, I almost starting laughing. I decided for the amount of time I was going to actually wear it, EBAY was the best place to get my veil. It cost $12 with free shipping. One tier, shoulder length, ivory.

Here is a good full frontal of me on the dance floor – forgive the face!!

So Bottom Line, Tips for alterations and for buying your gown:
1) Don’t order until you are SURE. This is one of the most important purchases of your life and you want to look phenomenal. If you are not sure about the dress/consultant experience/shop, walk away. You will be glad that you did.
2) Be your own advocate, or bring someone with you who will be. You have to make choices about your dress order and alterations. You may get pressure from people to do what THEY think you should do, and sometimes it’s best to defer to the experts. However, if you are feeling uncomfortable (i.e. forced into buying, forced into an alteration you don’t want/need) STAND UP FOR YOURSELF! We originally didn’t like the French bustle on my gown and my sister suggested a carriage bustle. They did it up lickety split, and it was so much better. They tried to sell me a slip to go under the dress and tell me I needed it. I didn’t want it, so I said no. You don’t have to say yes to everything that they tell you!
3) Be cautious about who you show pictures of your gown to. I know a lot of girls share on LIW, and that’s great, because I think people on here are generally sweet and tactful. However, you may have a relative/friend that isn’t so much that way! A friend of mine had a relative tell her she looked pregnant in an early picture of her dress! Needless to say, she ended up ordering another one!
DOJ: Macys and Ebay
I found seller Jewelry3721 from Kittygag’s review.
I got the gorgeous bracelet I wore for $3.75 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone thought it was way more expensive. My earrings were from Macys….$40.

I can’t find a close up shot of my earrings! So I’ve taken a pic of them by themselves….

Shoes: Shoe Elegance, Lynbrook, NY Grade: A+
I had passed this store a million times growing up. They have been there for 15 years, and have an amazing selection of dyeables! I chose a VERY low heel, since I’m already pretty tall, and had it dyed, because my dress was “pearl”, and I was not sure what direction to go with for my shoes, other than to just match them to my dress. They are VERY nice in there, and helped me try on about 10 pairs before settling on my comfortable shoes – I knew I’d be walking around all day!
On the day off, my feet were mangled by the end of the night, but I had been doing a TON of dancing, jumping, and walking around.
Mine are on the right in this pic. Very simple! My bag, on top, was borrowed from my sister. I think I held it for about 10 seconds the whole day.

Bridesmaid Dresses: Davids Bridal Grade: A
Not all of my girls were centrally located, and I wanted to keep the price of the bridesmaid dresses down, because sorry, no one wears them again. Originally, I had considered just asking the girls to each get a black dress, but I just couldn’t shake the idea of how nice champagne would look as a complement to the fall flowers. In champagne, there were 40 different styles at the time that the girls could choose from. I told them to pick whatever they wanted, and they all ended up picking different ones! They each were able to express their personal style and feel beautiful and comfortable, and that is what I wanted. David’s service was fine, despite a lot of things that I had heard to the contrary beforehand. We always went on the fly and never made appointments. For selecting the dresses, that was fine, but with alterations, you have to make appointments (which makes sense!). If you can go on “off” times like a Tuesday afternoon rather than a Saturday, I’d recommend that, because you will get more attention. The prices are good – I’d say a long bridesmaid dress averages at about $140. All the girls ended up getting alterations on their own, so I really can’t comment on how David’s fares with that!
Flower Girl: My darling niece, mygirldress.com
I cannot even believe what some places try to charge for a FG dress. Mygirldress.com is very reasonable.

Tuxedos: Advance Formal Wear, Rockville Centre, NY Grade: C
I like vendors that are super experienced, and this store has been around for YEARS. They did my sister’s wedding almost 10 years ago. The man who helped us was very appreciative for our business, and also advised us. HOWEVER, I don’t know if something is going on in the life of the owner, but after our initial positive experience, all the groomsmen came back to us when they got measured asking us what the owner’s deal was. His behavior got more strange and inappropriate as time went on, and 2 groomsmen tried on their pants to find they still had chalk on them and were not tailored AT ALL. The guy had to do it right there – how does that happen??? My husband’s shirt was ripped, and the buttons on his jacket were loose. Every member of the bridal party had something else to say about the guy’s behavior. I hate having to write a less than perfect review, but it was just TOO weird. Sadly, we wouldn’t go back there.

Hair: Nicole D’Angio A+++++++++++++++++++++++++
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE NICOLE!!!!!!!!!!
When it comes to my hair, I knew I needed someone who was the best, because my hair is MY THING, and I’m obsessed with it looking perfect. A girl I went to HS with got married, and her hair was awesome, so I was on the phone the next day tracking down Nicole, who did her hair.
Nicole is probably one of the nicest people you will ever meet. I am so blessed and pleased that I got to work with her, because she is so busy, and gets so many inquiries. My family loved her – she was just such a wonderful person to have with you on your wedding day.
EVERYONE LOOKED AMAZING on the day of the wedding. I am so crazy with my hair, and Nicole really made me feel comfortable; I was so confident in her hands. I was obsessed with my hair on the day of and I got SO many compliments!
If you have trouble getting in touch with Nicole, just try to be patient! I know it’s hard when you’re planning a wedding but she is WORTH IT TIMES a million! I find it hard to articulate how amazing Nicole is – but just read any review of hers and you’ll see! SHE IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All hair/makeup pics below!
Makeup: Lisa Bari A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Lisa LISTENS. That is what was so important to me about our interaction. I wear makeup, but not a lot, and I wanted to look glam but not gaudy on my wedding day. I wanted natural, kicked up a notch. I had never seen my mom and sister look better – I mean, she really made them look absolutely gorgeous. My bridesmaid, Beth, looked absolutely gorgeous too. My makeup stayed ALL NIGHT, even though I was dancing like a holy maniac.
Me:

ALL READY TO GO!!!!!!

ALL OF US @ the reception:

Transportation: 3J’s Limousines, Bethpage, NY Grade: A-
I chose this company because of their PBA affliation, and because they give discounts to PBA members. I did most of the planning and arrangements directly with the owner, which made me happy. Everything was perfect. The drivers were on time, the limos were clean and the drivers also helped out in the church getting us in line to go. I was VERY happy with 3J’s. The ONLY thing that annoyed me was that one driver was suggesting to DH that he should get more of a tip – WHEN he only had to drive ONE mile from the church to the reception!!! And, he got a 20% grat included from the very beginning. That pi—ed me off. We just got married, and you’re all up in his face asking for money?? However, this one driver doesn’t represent the whole company, and I would definitely recommend 3J’s for their reliability, prices, cleanliness, and punctuality. The owner, Neil, is a really nice guy, and the other drivers were great, too.
Here’s me, SO nervous, sitting in the limo before church:

Hotel for OOT guests: Hampton Inn, Rockville Centre, NY Grade: A
Newer hotel, nice, gave a discount for a block of rooms. Within walking distance to several bars, but NO shuttle so that was a bummer. No bar inside either, but again, very close walking distance to downtown RVC which has a TON of bars and restaurants way cooler to hang out at than a hotel bar ? The original sales manager was a space case, but then Andrea Russo took over for her and she was AWESOME at returning calls, very professional and really nice. I really liked her.
OOT Packets: Dollar Tree, Etsy seller, Walmart Grade: A++++++ for ME!
Going with the fall theme, I bought this fall computer paper at Walmart to make our OOT inserts with information for our guests.

Etsy: Seller, Stickdoodles --- FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
Also, I found the cutest stickers EVER that were going to be customized for our wedding from seller Stickerdoodles on Etsy. And then the trouble began. After spotty communication for a while AFTER I HAD ALREADY PAID, WEEKS AND WEEKS WENT BY WITH NO STICKERS. NOW, I’M NOT A PERSON TO GET CRAZY OVER STICKERS, BUT I AM ABOUT TO GET CRAZY WHEN SOMETHING PROMISED TO ME NEVER ARRIVES, AND IT IS SO TIME SPECIFIC. AND AND AND I ORDERED THEM OVER A MONTH IN ADVANCE TO ENSURE THAT WE’D GET THEM ON TIME! I FILED A CLAIM WTH PAYPAL, AND MY PAYMENT WAS RETURNED THE NEXT DAY. NEVER GOT THE STICKERS THAT THEY CLAIMED WERE “IN THE MAIL”.
BUT this saga did have a happy ending!
Etsy Seller, tickledpinkpaperink – A++++++++++++++
But on a happier note, at the last second, I found an awesome seller who drew up some sweet and adorable stickers in a days notice and got them out to me right away. She saved the day.

Photography: Modern Wedding Photography A++
Denise was one of our best vendor choices.
Denise Chastain, the owner, is VERY nice. My dad got sick close to the wedding, and when I told Denise, she was genuinely concerned. Additionally, she spent time on the phone with me and looked at pictures and effects I had found online that I liked.
One week after the wedding, we received our pro-pic first slideshow draft. SO COOL! She got pictures of EVERYTHING!
Here is the link to the original slideshow:
http://www.modernweddingphotography.tv/lizwill
All of the pro pics in this review are from Denise. The only issue is my package did not include CDs of my photos, which in hindsight, I definitely should have ordered. I will be doing that in the future and adding more pics!

Wedding Favors: ASPCA
We made a donation to the ASPCA for our wedding. We have 2 cats and love animals ? When you make a donation, they give you donation cards to put at your placesettings, so that was great! (You can see these in the centerpiece picture)
Flowers: East Williston Florist Grade: A+++++++++++++++++++++
DH’s aunt owns EWF. We had initial meetings about the flowers, and didn’t do samples, so on the day of the wedding, I was BLOWN away by how amazingly beautiful the flowers came out. She really went all out, and the arrangements were artistic and beautiful. The bo-k’s were SO pretty. I would urge other brides to consider local flower shops – I know she works with brides from all budgets, and her artistic vision is PHENOMENAL.

Rehearsal Dinner: George Martin Restaurant, Grade: A+++++++++++
We had our RD in the upstairs room at George Martin. It was great. Buffet dinner of totally delicious food, and a nice space where everyone could walk around and hang out. Great choice by my in-laws! I loved it. The service was amazing!
Here is me and DH at the rehearsal:
Rehearsal dinner DRESS – Old Navy, bought 2 years ago on clearance – whatwhat!!!

Bridal Party Gifts: Coach Outlet & Swiss Army Store, A+++ for a great deal
I found my BP gifts back in September. We went to the Coach outlet in Riverhead, and I found 5 bronze clutches that matched PERFECTLY with the bridesmaids dresses. I was so happy, and I knew this would be a gift that they could use again. And the outlet was having a great sale, so the price could not be beat, either! I got a $90 clutch for less than $40!!!

DH got his guys swiss army knives. I don’t have any pictures but they were a big hit!
Mother Nature: A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
We were SO blessed with the weather. Like beyond. It has rained almost every weekend before our wedding, and was just generally not the nicest October. The day of our wedding was 55 and SUNNY. It was just the most beautiful day. It was a little chilly, but that’s what we wanted – I didn’t want to be HOT! You can see from all our outdoor pics that it was a totally gorgeous day!!!!!!!!!!

Church: St. Agnes Cathedral, Rockville Centre, NY, Grade:A
DH’s parents, aunt, and grandparents were all married at St. Agnes, and it’s a gorgeous church, so we decided we would like to get married there. Also, my home parish was SLOW in getting back to us about booking a wedding date, and St. Agnes was very fast! They do a lot of weddings, so they book up over a year in advance for the Saturday afternoon ceremony. I knew I wanted the latest ceremony of the day. We originally wanted to get married in October, but St. Agnes was booked up on all the ceremony dates I wanted through Halloween, and I didn’t want to get married on Halloween. (I have small niece/nephew and I wanted other parents to be able to take their kids trick-or-treating, etc!) So the first date they had available was 11/7, so we took it! We both love the fall so I was happy with our decision.
I don’t know how much church donations usually are, but St. Agnes runs about $500 for the donation and music. If you are a non-parishoner, it is $750. Just FYI!
St. Agnes was fantastic and fast with the booking process, but once we got closer to my wedding, I didn’t know until 2 weeks out who was doing our wedding. AND then I had trouble getting an appt to see him. I just wanted the priest to know us as more as the guy in the tux and girl in the veil!
I have heard some not-so-great things about the coordinator over at St. A’s, but she was great to us. She gets things done, she’s a woman after my own heart.
A funny part of our review of St. Agnes is that the priest, bless his heart, announced us with the wrong name! Here is the picture of our reaction to that moment!!!

When DH got pelted with a packet of birdseed:

Wedding Programs: DIY! A++++ for ME
I didn’t want to spend money on programs. I saw an awesome one page scroll design in Martha Stewart and I just thought it was different and really cute! I replicated it the best I could (I could not afford HAND calligraphy like all of Martha’s, so I used my handy-dandy computer!) I tied them with tulle from Dollar Tree. They were displayed in a nice basket and not this cardboard box! Michaels had a sale on cardstock 2 packages of 50 sheets for $5….so I even ended up with some left over.

Photocards: Vista Print Grade: A
For just the price of the shipping, I ordered these cards. Not a ton of people uploaded photos (Facebook is so much better for this!) But they were basically free, so no biggie. Just a note with Vistaprint…I chose the SLOW shipping method and they came quite fast…so I don’t think you really need to pay for the super fast - and much more expensive - shipping.

The Cake: Malverne Bakery Grade: B+
I didn’t eat more than the one bite, but from what I heard from everyone, the cake was amazing. Apparently Malverne threw in an additional tier to the cake, which was nice.
The only odd part was the spider-webby pattern thing on the middle tier.
But to be honest, the cake, besides it’s taste of course, was like last on my priority list. Malverne was nice, on top of all the delivery and everyone enjoyed the cake!

DJ: Starlight Express GRADE: A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Paul was our MC. I have to be honest, he kinda had a distant attitude each time we met with him before the party. He kept saying, “don’t worry, we know what we’re doing”. And he wasn’t lying. The night of the party they were OFF THE HOOK RIDICULOUS AMAZING.
He was NOT annoying at all as an MC – I actually thought his personality was perfect, and he kept checking in with me and DH to make sure everything was going right. They stuck to what we wanted them to play, and our dance floor was JAMMED to the gills the entire night. People were dancing on the carpets because the dance floor was so full. The DJ, Donnie, did a fantastic job mixing the songs really frequently, which meant that we got to hear more of our requests AND people didn’t have a chance to get bored of the songs. The ZAP shooter also got a lot of amazing shots! Starlight also does a video montage during dinner as part of their package.
They rocked. I would hire them again 100000%, in a heartbeat.
Some dance floor pictures from the ZAP shooter:

The Rockville Links Country Club – Rockville Centre, NY Grade: A++++++ INFINITY
I only looked at one venue. Once we went to the Links, it had everything we were looking for, and so we booked it immediately. It helped that it was a mile from our apartment and a quick ride (15 minutes) for most of our guests. In terms of convienience, that was very big for me. Their attention to detail was EXEMPLARY. The amount of add-ons that they did for us was amazing. They really cared about our wedding being our own, and didn’t nickel and dime us about anything. At cocktail hour, we had a raw bar, and everyone was commenting on how huge the shrimp were. We also had a slider station with French fries and sweet potato fries with different dipping sauces. There was never a time at The Links where I asked for something and they said no. They even set up a station for our guests while they were leaving giving out hot pretzels with mustard and nacho cheese. This was a very big hit with our guests. Again, something I heard about and asked The Links – Steve, our amazing banquet manager, researched it and made it happen. THEY NEVER SAID NO. I love The Links. The AMAZING work they did gave us a perfect wedding memory.
From the balcony at the Links:

Here is a view of the dining room:

The bar (my nephew is not drinking haha)

Outside on the grounds:

Mini-moon: Wentworth Hotel & Spa, Portsmouth, NH, B+
Gorgeous. This hotel is jammed during the summer months, but when we went (11/8-1/11), there was NO one there. Quick ride to downtown Portsmouth, which is a cute town, but not one you need more than a day to explore. Food at the hotel is decent, not amazing. We were just so lucky to get to get away for a few days to just enjoy being married and keep up on our cloud after the wedding. We wanted to wait to take our traditional honeymoon (and pay for it ha). This was a perfect trip.

IF YOU ARE STILL READING, THANK YOU! It took me a long time to finish this review.
Best of luck with all of your planning.
So, this is THE END….and just the beginning!

Just Cindy
