What is the difference between a cantor and a rabbi?

Sorry, silly question, but I am not sure what is the difference between the two in terms of the wedding ceremony...if anyone could explain it I would really appreciate it!
Thanks!

Re: What is the difference between a cantor and a rabbi?

I think a Rabbi is more official in most people's eyes.

Well in the Catholic Church, a Cantor is usually someone who able to give holy communion and usually leads the congregation in songs and prayers..

to my knowledge, when it comes toa wedding, there is no difference, because you really don't need either. The rabbi doens't marry you, you marry each other by the Haray Aht. That having been said, many people feel that a rabbi's presence is more official.

Re: What is the difference between a cantor and a rabbi?

Both are equally official.

Rabbi literally means 'Teacher.' His job is to facilitate study, and be a leader of a congregation.

Cantor is an English word, the Hebrew word is Chazan. The Cantor's realm is liturgical, and deals with the spiritual and musical aspects of Judaism.

A couple can have a Rabbi or Cantor officiate at the wedding, there is no difference in terms of legitimacy.

Re: What is the difference between a cantor and a rabbi?

Thanks PrincessRose!

Still, there are a lot of people who feel more comfortable with a rabbi. There's no real reason behind it though. I'd talk to your families before choosing either. You never know if they'e gonna throw an s-fit. My Fh's family wants a rabbi, end of story. And it has to be a make rabbi apparently...though, I wo't let them dictate that if I find a rabbi I like who is a woman.

Rabbi is a religious leader and officient. A cantor is a singer.

Re: What is the difference between a cantor and a rabbi?

I'd say a cantor is also a religious leader and officiant..

Re: What is the difference between a cantor and a rabbi?

We are having a cantor officiate our ceremony. He is no less official than a rabbi...just his role in the temple is different and what he studied in school.
