I too, HATE it when people shorten your child's name! That is a big reason why we chose Paul Robert for the baby's name. No one, no matter how hard they try, can shorten Paul. It is what it is!

My advice to the other mommies-to-be, and the other women only thinking about babies some day - DO NOT TELL ANYONE what you are considering naming your child before they are born. Just say, 'we're not sure yet,' or 'we have a couple options, but we are going to decide when we see him/her.' SAVE yourself the grief.

I was 'lucky' enough to have my MIL emailing me name ideas - unsolicited! Who asked her, and who cares what she thought anyway?? Ugh!
I quickly shut her up by mentioning that the baby was going to be given a saints name (I am Catholic) and my in-laws don't really practice a particular faith, so any mention of religion and MIL clams up! THANK GOODNESS!

JENN, I am ROTFLMAO (rolling on the floor laughing my TUSH off).. at the Sylvester incident. LOL. What should they call him, 'SILLY' ?? HAH. But I see your point that some names seem almost guaranteed to get a nickname.

I like the JohnAnthony with no space also, but like Elizabeth also said (about hyph) that I'll always have the option down the road to drop the Anthony. I would never want to, but I feel like I'm forcing the kid to have both names... What if he wants to be just 'John' like daddy when he's 4 ? LOL. (the things us women ponder, my husb would be laughing at this conversation!) and I guess the nicknames, Johnny, my husb has been called JohnJohn (yuck) by some family when he was a kid, I guess you cant help those

I have a friend Tommy, whose son is Thomas (6), and GOD help you if you call Thomas, Tommy!! He, the child, will have a COW !

ya know a friend of the family the other day (30 years old), asked me (my due date is oct 3rd)..
she goes 'so what did you Dr say ? does he think you'll go on Oct 3rd ?' I thought it was a practical joke !!! Can you imagine how stupid some people are !!!! and I agree with claud. This is what my SIL did, don't share your thoughts on names to anyone! You'll avoid alot of annoying comments and honestly does it matter what the name is until the baby is here and healthy?? They can wait!!

Claud, you are SOOO RIGHT !! About not mentioning names to people ! I REGRET having started to mention my name choices. You just DONT CARE to hear their comments !!

I told my MIL that I LOVE the name Luciano and she goes 'ohhh, i dont like that' and I respond sarcastically to her (shes cute, I have to say I love her shes a great MIL), I responded 'well dont worry because that doesnt matter to me!'
and then she goes 'Does John like the name Anthony as the 2nd name ?' and I go 'Why dont you ask me if I like John as the first name ?' (there she goes battling for her only child, LOL). She loves my sarcastic answers ! I respect the fact that DH wanted a Junior (Even tho its not JR unless it has his middle name, and his is Robert, but he doesnt mind and does like JohnAnthony).

MY sister (just gave birth 8 wks ago) had in SIL telling her 'ohh I like that name, can we have it ??'-they are not even MARRIED !!! and she was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO


Ladies, the comments and questions you get are ridiculous, that is a great piece of advice, to keep your names to yourselves (well only tell us on the boards, LOL.) I hate when I hear 'oh, what made you pick that name ? oh really ? Oh, I used to work with this girl by that name, what a b**%#'.


And then agian, its HARD for me to keep my mouth shut about anything so I cant be one to tell YOU to do it.

First of all, Anna, thank you for giving the definition of your initials because I sat here going 'WTH'???? I really have to go take an abbreviation class or something because I have become brain dead since I got married.

Second, Elizabeth, I hope everything is ok that you are on bedrest. And I like Ryan Elizabeth and Ryan Danielle for a girl. Very pretty

Third, JennRenee, once again you had me cracking up with the Sylvester thing!! I would have loved to see his little face while you asked him that!!!

As for comments about baby names -- my mother and my aunt are notorious for that! My aunt had 6 kids and is now on her 11th grandchild and everytime my cousins tell her the name, she goes 'ick' -- excuse me, but you had 6 chances to name your kids and the names you picked weren't much to write home about either, so I don't think you have any say in the matter! Your turn is over. I tell my mother the same thing! What originality did she have, me and my sister are Debbie & Dawn, and my sister was named that because she was born at that time!!! So pfft to that philosophy!!! Now, just watch, when my turn comes my mother will HATE every name I come up with because I like those real Italian names (love Luciana, Anna) and my mother is Irish and wants a 'Kaitlyn' or 'Erin' or 'Patrick' or 'Ryan' as grandchildren -- no offense to anybody -- but not this daughter!!! I tell her that her Irish daughter (my sister) will have to do it, but my sister didn't do it either, my nephew is Nicholas Joseph with an Italian last name, so how funny is that????? Ok, I babbled enough now.

Anna, you had me laughing at the 'clueless teacher' SIL, because until I had so many pregnant friends I would have asked the same question!!! We non moms are a bit dense on the baby scene, although I will admit that one was kind of a no-brainer!! Also I ALWAY ask 'What made you pick that name', but NEVER in a way that suggests I don't like the name!!! I'm just nosy and I like to see the thought process that goes before the name. I didn't realize it was rude to ask, and I will stop! Thanks for the heads up!
The Sylvester thing was pretty funny. I hear through the teacher grapevine (aka staff room ) that he is now going by Sly... should've seen that one coming!
Debbie, your whole paragraph about names in your family had me in tears AS USUAL!! My mom hates every name I love and has threatened to just call my future children A, B, C or 1, 2, 3 because of it. I also prefer Italian names, but they just sound silly with Our last name ('I'd like you to meet my son, Carmine Ryan...' NOOOOO! ) I tend to like unusual names, havng grown up stuck with Jennifer, which is another reason Italian names are so appealing ~ you don't hear them much! Although being a Ryan now, I'll probably have to give up having a Gianna or a Alessandra or a Marcella.

1) Dont stop asking why people chose names, its not offensive AT ALL !! I ask too, and not in an offensive tone. But the facial expression that goes with it is usually what irks me, but im sure you wouldnt have a puss on your face as you ask, lol.

2) As far as your ITALIAN names, go ahead and have a multi-cultural name ! MY friend just had a baby whose name is Irish and Greek - Liam Demetrios (and VERY IRISH last name). I thought it was a really cute name ! symbolizes both mom and dads backgrounds ! GO FOR IT !

Debbie, Jenn, I have to say my sis and I are BIG on the VERY ITALIAN NAMES, one of our friends (shes polish) is like (shes very blunt and can be nasty-ish sounding) she goes 'ALRIGHT GUYS the WHOLE WORLD KNOWWWSSSSSS YOURE ITALIAN!!!' because my sisters kids are all VERY ITalian names (Valentina, ALessia and Massimo) and they all have 2 middle names (like her DH and his family) and she took it as an opporutinty to get the namesakes out of the way, LOL. They just go by their first names ! so they each have 3 VERY ITALIAN NAMES. MY DH is Armenian but doesnt speak the language so he wasnt brought up with that same culture as those that do speak the language. (its amazing what a different world you enter whether or not you speak 'the language', whatever it may be.) I know close friends of the family that DONT speak ITalian (the kids are all my age) and they could care less about Italian names or culture or anything...(im not saying this is ALWAYS the case, I know people who are adults and are ANGRY that they werent spoken to in Italian and are trying to learn now..awe).
Anyway, Armenian names are kinda EHH, hard to pronounce and none appeal to me, and DH doesnt care for them, so my last name ending in IAN is Armenian enough for him ! LOL (no vowel BOO HOO !!! I lost my vowel ending !!!)

I am LMAO (whoo hoo, I finally got an abbreviation right)!!!!!! I LOVE the name Carmine!!! It would really go with my last name, but the poor kid would sound like some gangster!!!! And my name for a girl was ALWAYS (and will be if I have a girl) Gianna -- see that we have the same taste!! My mother would just look at me and shake her head!! I told her don't laugh when she has a grandson named Vito or Gino!!! I think I like the names with some pizazz to them because mine was so boring -- Deb, whoopdedoo.

I LOVE the name Angelina!!! I would name a girl that or Angela, because of his mom, who's Mary Angela, and my aunt who died (she was Angelina), but I can't do that because Joe's father's wife (who might I add is 3 months YOUNGER then me, but looks much OLDER then me) is named Angela, so there goes that!!!!!

I think that name sounds really nice together!!!!

LOL Deb, im dying laughing here. My brothers name is Carmine Joseph. Too bad if people think gangster, lol. DH hates the name Luciano, thinking it sounds too gangster-ish too. or John Luciano. Therefore I will use Luciana as a first name (and taking care of my sis, Lucia in putting her name in my first born's name (if its a girl). She used my name as a middle name for her 1st.

Gianna is a really nice name, my SIL has it picked for herself. She wants it pronounced Gee-Anna. and if someone actually knows how to read in proper Italian, the name Gianna is pronounced JAHN-NA. So keep that in mind. some names you have to change the spelling so people pronounce it the way you want (unfortunately). im not sure how you want it pronounced. Either way, its soo pretty ! (expecially the last 4 letters ! )
A few people asked me why dont I make Luciana with 2 N's and thats my reason. I want it to be Luciana (like Juliana - light on the N) 2 N's makes it a heavier syllable on the N, it would be LU CHEE AHHNN NNAA. MAybe its an ITalian language thing. im sure if you dont speak thelanguage you have nl clue what im saying, its all in my head.. lol.

Oh Anna, I know what you're talking about. I know it'll be pronounced the American way. Listen, my maiden name was the easiest thing to pronounce -- say it as it's spelled -- but to the rest of the world, that wasn't the case -- they added letters, changed it totally to the point where I said 'whatever'. So I thought when I married Joe and took his name, it would be better -- NOPE. I am called names that don't even sound anything near the actual name. It cracks me up!! But then again, my own father (who's from Italy but mutulates his Calabrese dialect) even makes up a different one!!! But he's infamous for not getting anyone's name right or changing it to please him!

Go run some errands girlfriend!! I haven't done a blessed thing here at work and I now have to continue my Salem hotel search! If I don't book something today, I'll have a nervous breakdown!!! LOL

MY sister had Marcella as her girl name (When she just had a boy) I love it as MAR CHELL AH also.

Alessia is pronounced AH LESS EE AA. If it was one S it would be A LEE SEE AA. I hope they get it right in school. My MIL is infamous for pronoucing things wrong, always says ALEXIA (ARGGGG). I cant understand whats so hard about pronunciation !!

There are so many names I love that would be butchered in English. Using Alessandra as a first name is a no-no for me, cuz i dont want Alexandra, I would want Alessandra, so Id use it as a middle name. For boys MAtteo is cute (Italan for Matthew, pronounced MA TAY OH. I love GianLuca also. (DH hates it).

Anna- LOL! I am 1/2 Armenian and gladly gave up an Armenian last name (ends with 'IAN' of course) when I got married. It was very difficult for people to pronounce. I agree the Armenian first names are toughies too.

My SIL is Irish and her hubby is Greek, she has a long 11 letter Greek last name. She has 3 boys but word in the family is that she may not be done with having babies yet. She has her heart set on Erin as a first name if she ever has her girl. Her name would definitely represent the backgrounds of both parents.
