How long should a MOH speech be?? UPDATE

I am writing my speech for my BFF's wedding. I dont want to take to long but also do not want to be too short or brief . What do you think is the best amount of time???

Thanks again for your help ladies Last night two of the BM's and myself sat down and put the final touches on the speech (over 2 carafes of wine...... )it's about 3 minutes and we managed to throw in some laughs that wont emabrrass the bride . Im siked

i'd say between 5-8 minutes... 10 being the ABSOLUTE max!!

Yeah NO WAY 10 too long.

The other thing is I like the speech...but it isnt really very funny. I wanted it to be funny....but I feel like people either A) won't get the jokes bc they werent with us or B) They are jokes at the expense of the bride and I don't want it sound bad.

So my is it okay if it's sweet and sentimental and not that funny (there a cple lines that are 'cute' funny)

TOTALLY!!!!!!!! i'll give you an example of a really good MOH speech...

the MOH was the brides sister and she began by telling this story about how when they were little, their bedrooms were right next door to each others... and one night there was a REALLY bad thunderstorm and she went on to say that the bridee snuck into her room that night b/c she was reallty scared of the thunder and lightning & jumped into bed almost crying for her.... so she went onto say that the whole night they hugged each other scared blah blah blah

then she closed with something like 'i'm so happy you found someone who can comfort your during scary times for the rest of your life just as i had that night of the thunderstorm' it was really nice!! one of the best MOH speeches i've heard!!

awww that is sweet yeah Im going to keep working on it...meeting with the other BM's tonite so I'll see what they think

5-8 mins is always the best guideline.

My MOH's speech was longer than our Best Man's but she went first so it was no big deal. I think she talked a little over 5 minutes or so.

I think my sister's speech at my wedding was about 5 minutes and it was awesome. You definitely don't wanna go too much over that. At my sisters wedding, her BIL did a forever long speech and it was the worst part of the reception. We all had to stand forever holding up our glasses wishing he'd just shut up.

But too short is kind of sad too. I'd say between 3-5 should be good.

ugh i LOVED our best man's speech, it was awesome, when i get our video i have to put it on you tube i think best man speech's are nice when they are a little funny but for the MOH i think sweet and sentimental is the way to go

I think it all depends on how long it takes you to read it. I am sure you can say something emotional and from the heart within 5-6 min.

I agree - As nice as it is to have long speeches and hear what people have to say, as a guest, not to sound mean, but long speeches tend to get a little painful to sit through (i feel horrible saying that, but, I'm being honest...) Personally, I think short and sweet is perfect...At our wedding the BM went first, and his was probably close to 5 mins - it was TOO long, in both mine and DH's opinion, and also many many people that were there...My MOH was probably around 2 mins, and there wasn't a dry eye in the place...everyone loved it...

I think it's really more about WHAT you say, not how long it goes on for...

JMO!

Exactly!!! And being that you are a recent bride, you know that whatever you say to your friend will mean the world to her...there's plenty of other times for you to go through your countless memories...

I'm sure it will be perfect

My sisters speech at my wedding was long and funny, it was more like a roast!
she did such a great job, and everyone who knows us knows how much we love eachother and how she is just such a comedian and wanted to get a good laugh out of everyone

She also did not want to give the microphone back, it was hysterical

I just went to a wedding there to best man gave the worst speech. Rambled for about 6 or 7 minutes all inside jokes. It was soo bad.

I think the speech should be something everyone can get. Something about the couple that makes people aww a little and laugh.

Yeah I think the 6-8 sounds good. I feel like it's perfect if the MOH's speech is sentimental because the best man's speech is usually making fun of the groom. Haha. I'm sure you will be great!

Im going to have to say no more than 3-5 minutes. Short and sweet! I think of it more like a toast, not a speech.
