MC 127's, March 13, 2010 review. All star vendors- Westbury Manor, 12th Night Photography, Flowers & Designs by Gina, Royalty , Halo Productions, T E S S* A, Music Mixed Intelligently, and Cindy Ross

Finally, my review from start to finish.

Love story-

Mark and I have been together for nine years before he finally popped the question. When he did, it was a surprise for me because all week we argued over stupid things. He later confessed that he did that on purpose to get me mad so I would have no clue about his plans. He popped the question on December 7, 2008.

From the day of the engagement, we knew we would want to get married in 2010. My team (mother and sister) and I started to look for venues in January 2009. We looked at many locations before we selected Westbury Manor. I was also limited to the time of year the wedding would occur due to my seasonal allergies.

It really helped that my team and I viewed several locations during the week because the weekends were busy and we wasted a lot of time waiting to be called especially if we went without appointments. My suggestion is to allot one hour to view each venue and then add on travel time when you are viewing these venues. Definitely, ask to have things thrown in because it really works!

After selecting the venue, our wedding date was established- March 13, 2010. My team and I worked on selecting one vendor per month so that I did not feel overwhelmed. Because I looked at so many companies for each vendor, DH trusted me and only went to the booking appointment.

In the beginning, my sister was more organized. She created a separate email account -using yahoo so that all wedding related correspondence would go to that email address. Therefore, when I went to bridal shows, I put this email address down so that my ongoing personal email account would not be full of spam.
Secondly, my sister created a binder where she got tabs and loose-leaf paper and divided the binder into different categories. It was her way of being organized. I however, insisted on buying one of those professional wedding planner books from Barnes & Noble and I did not use it at all. Instead, throughout the entire wedding process I used the one my sister made.

LIW-

I would not have found this site without my sister/MOH doing a Google search on wedding venues in Long Island. This site is incredible due to those that created it and the fabulous members that share their daily frustrations, ideas and bargains!!! Thanks again because you girls truly know your stuff!!!

Engagement Gathering-

My sister/MOH threw me an engagement gathering on January 31, 2009. She invited close family and friends via “Evite”. The gathering was at my mother’s house, it was casual which is just the way we wanted it. We had food, drinks, games and even went to our favorite spot (Café Moments) afterwards for more drinks and dancing.

It was at this time, that I decided to register for some bridal shower gifts so, DH and I registered at Macy’s and Bed Bath & Beyond. For me the prices were pretty much the same especially when Macy’s had the sale. However, as we all know, Macy’s has a sale everyday. For a lot of the fine china, I registered half-&-half at both stores so that my guests could use coupons at either store. I particularly loved the Macy’s registry because at the end, I received over $100 in gift cards from them, which I have used. Had I known this, I probably would have only registered at Macy’s so that I could have gotten even more money back.

Bridal Shower-

I wanted the shower to be a surprise, which included the date and location. However, the family went out for dinner and we came across Bob’s Place Restaurant in Floral Park. The décor at Bob’s is sooo me and I knew I wanted my shower to be there. Therefore, the surprise would just be the date- January 16, 2010. My surprise date was eventually spoiled after someone (who will not be named) told me the date. The service and food was excellent but we knew this ahead of time because we had previously gone there for dinner several times. My team had a choice of three different rooms varying in size, but in the end they chose the room downstairs at the back with a fireplace, which was most welcoming since the event was in January. The cake, which was included in the package, was so good that my mother and MOH did not get to taste it. We had so many compliments on the food and choice of location. My team bought STD’s and invitations from Vistaprint.com for this occasion. Once it came time for writing the “Thank You” cards, I went and purchased the matching stationary from Vistaprint. You cannot beat the price especially if you have a promo code.

Bachlorette party-

My team and local bridesmaids planned a fun night at Lips in Manhattan. My friends and I had a blast there. Who knew “they” would look that good. After dinner and the show at Lips, we went to a sex toyshop only for my body paint only to be confiscated at the doors of the 40/40 club?. The night was truly fun and I would do it again easily.

My dress from RK Bridal: A++++
Bridal party dresses including my mother’s dress from RK Bridal
Flower Girl dress from Burlington Coat Factory:

I went to many stores to look and try on dresses. I went to RK bridal on a weekday morning in June and was probably one of the first five people in the store. Like everyone else says, you need to get there early and carry as little as possible with you. I had my team with me. I knew the style/type of dress I wanted so it was a matter of finding the Mermaid design I liked. I saw one at Macy’s and was really close to buying it however, RK bridal was my last stop. I looked all morning and was allowed to try on more than five dresses. It was a toss up between two mermaid dresses but I fell in love with the detail at the bottom of my dress. I did alterations there and had NO problems. The seamstress assigned to me understood me clearly and I was more than satisfied with their work. They even gave me a blue garter and I wore the garter my mom bought me and the one RK gave me me. It was double the fun for DH when it came to the garter removal!!

All the girls got their dresses from RK bridal. The dresses came so far in advance either at the store for the ones who got alterations there and for the ones who got them delivered to their homes because they did the No-frills program. The girls who got their dresses altered at the store also had no problems.

My mom got her dress from RK bridal. She looked really BEAUTIFUL in her dress and they did a great job on her alterations as well.

My Flower girl wore a dress purchased from Burlington Coat Factory because I refused to have someone spend over $100 on a dress that would be worn once. She even had a bolero jacket to match her dress. She was cute and performed her duties well. I got a cute flower girl basket from Wrap with Us for only a few $$’s and my florist provided the petals.

Men’s Warehouse: C

I was totally dissatisfied with the customer service at the Green Acres location where we did the original order. I called the corporate office personally to complain about the service and expected price agreement at that specific store location. I eventually had DH, my dad and three GM’s place their orders at the Westbury location after the drama at Green Acres. Getting the orders through the Westbury location was most satisfactory as they honored the price that was originally given to DH and I at the time of inquiry. The day of, everyone looked great and I was pleased with the overall look.

DOJ: A+++

I purchased my earrings at David’s Bridal in Westbury and it was right up my alley price wise and definitely style wise. I did not wear a necklace so I knew the earrings and my bracelet would need to match the details in the dress, which included pearls and crystals. I purchased my bracelet from Macy’s at 34th Street and got it on sale during the Christmas 2009 shopping. I also purchased earrings and necklaces from Macy’s for my entire bridal party during the same shopping trip using coupons.

Shoes: A++

I first bought a pair from DSW however, after the first dress fitting I realized that I would not be able to stand in them the entire night. So I went back to DSW (months later after the original purchase) with my receipt and shoes and exchanged them for something more comfy. I soooo wanted purple shoes but they were either too high or I hated the style, so I selected the ones you see in the pictures. Once I knew that it was going to rain on my DAY, I decided to wear my galoshes to the church. However, once I got to the church I kept them on during and after the ceremony and then changed into my “Nina’s” once I arrived at Westbury Manor.

Veil and Day of Hoodie: A

I learned about Tri- County indoor flea market located in Levittown from this site. Barrons, Barrons, Barrons is the place to go for any wedding accessory. This is where I selected and purchased my veil in December. I believe her name was Yana; she helped me find the veil that complemented my dress. They asked me when my wedding date was and they told me I could pick it up on the 3rd weekend in February. I went that weekend and it was ready and packed in a nice box. BTW, I was one of those brides who had their veil on the entire night because I thought when am I ever going to wear a veil again!

Across from Barrons is a stitch/personalization shop. I went there with my off-white hoodie from Old Navy and the store clerk put “Mrs. Fraser, est. 3/13/10.” I requested the writing be in purple and it came out exactly the way I wanted it. It took a week for it to be completed and DH picked up for me.

Favors:

Being that both sides of the family are Jamaican, it was mandatory that Black cake be given out to all the guests. It was a nice touch from my mother in law. We also gave out wine bottle stoppers because I love wine. My MOH, DH, uncle and I all helped put them in the bags and tie them nicely. All of the wine stoppers and supplies came from Wrap-With Us in Syosset. (BTW, that store is amazing for quality and price.)

Cake Topper:

I always knew about cake toppers but never knew or saw monogram cake toppers. Of course, you fabulous girls know everything and that is when I realized that I could make it or buy it. I used the directions from many of the girls from the various boards especially the DIY boards. I purchased my 4.5’ “F” from wineandcake.com. I also used my coupons from AC Moore and purchased the gem tac glue and crystals. The crystal colors were clear and green.

Picture sign-in board:

Mike from Twelfth Night took our e-pic at the Garden City Gazebo on a cold October afternoon. We ordered the picture from Snapfish.com and then bought the frame from Michael’s using a 50% off coupon.

Church Programs: A+++++

My pastor’s wife loves doing stationary work. I told her our colors and in what order we wanted the program to be and told her to do her thing. I did not see the outcome until after the wedding ceremony. She did a fabulous job and I received many compliments!

Vistaprint.com:

As previously mentioned, I used them for the bridal shower STD’s, invitations, and matching “Thank you” cards. I also used them to purchase the wedding STD’s. It was exactly what I wanted. They also arrived days before they said it would.

Wedding invitations from T E S S A- E v e n s t a r p a p e r i e. com A++++
She was great to work with during the entire design process. Originally, when I did the inventory form, I told her my color was blue however, by the time I was next on the list my color was changed to lavender. I was not worried about the timing so I did not send her too many emails. With that said, try to start her process once you have your colors. Once I saw my proof, I made changes because the wording was small and I wanted to add the church address. She gave me options on how we can still use the same size invitation all by changing the font. I made other small changes, which included adding on her ribbon service because I could not tie the ribbon at all. With T E S S A, she has a blog where her brides can win prizes. I was not too active but I got lucky one week and won matching placecards and table numbers from her and they really complemented the respective tables. She truly loves what she does and you can see the amount of pride she places in her work. So be patient!!!!! I got my invitations approximately five months before the wedding. The placecards and table numbers were sent to me about two weeks before the wedding. Initially, I did not receive them when she said she mailed them, I told her about it, and she printed and mailed me another set within three days. SHE ABSOLUTELY ROCKS for quality and price!!!!!

Now for the review on my ALL STAR vendors for the big wedding day on Saturday, March 13, 2010.

Weather- Big Fat F+++++

The week of the wedding, I checked the weather all week and it said 100% chance of rain all day on MY Saturday. It was one of the nastiest days in March (if not the year) because it rained all day and all night with gail force winds, streetlights were out, electricity in some homes in both Queens and Long Island were out, trees were downed and there was excessive flooding everywhere. The last picture shows some of the damage that took place on my wedding day.

Photography: A+++
Twelfth Night Photography

Garden City Park, NY 11040
(516)746- 5346

We had Mike and Randy for the day. I knew I wanted to use this company when I saw pictures from this website and when I met with the owner, Dominic. We were impressed with their work and finally chose them. We also got a lot for our money by using their a la carte option. In addition, they give you the option to add on an album even after the wedding. On the day of, Mike and Randy showed up in high spirits and a little earlier than expected. Mike also captured our engagement pictures. They gave us a surprise on the day of and I truly appreciate Dominic for that ? . Due to the inclement weather, we were not able to take one SINGLE picture outdoors and this was my biggest regret because formal pictures were limited to the studio at Westbury Manor. The RAIN just DID not STOP!!! The first two pictures are just two of the many e-pics we received.

Florist: A+++++
Flowers & Designs by Gina:
(718) 969-0261
[email protected]
Website: Ginaroseflowers.com

I heard about Gina from this site and I am so happy that I did. She captured my vision of BIG, ROUND and TIGHT arrangements and the fact that it must have purple hydrangeas in them. When I called to make an appointment, we emailed potential pictures back and forth and she hit the nail on the head with low Cp’s. When I first met with her, there it was- a low CP with everything that I wanted. Based on price, I realized that I could actually afford all high CP’s. After I did my rounds with other florists (I visited with five others), I called her back and told her I wanted to book her. When I met with her the second time, she had a high CP with EXACTLY what I wanted. At that appointment, I gave her a picture of the bo-k I wanted and she told me “don’t worry.” I booked her with full confidence that she would capture my vision. She covered the flowers for the church, petals for the flower girl basket, all the boutonnières including extra ones, corsages for the moms, all the Bo-k’s including a toss Bo-k, flowers for the cake, and petals for the place card table. Best of all, she was in my budget and did not go over at all. If you have yet to find a florist, and after reading my review, definitely call Gina to hear her out. In fact, I visited with a friend who won the CP at her table, she still had her CP three weeks after the wedding and I was amazed. Gina arrived earlier than expected so I did not get to see her at my house because I was still at the hair salon. She decorated the church and made sure everything was perfect at Westbury Manor. She did more than I could have asked for. I had a great experience with her due to her talent and the fact that she communicated constantly with me via email during and even after the wedding planning.

Day of Coordinator: A+++
Cindy from Cynthia Ross Affairs
(516) 280-4617
Website: cynthiarossaffairs.com

My sister convinced me to get a DOC because she said, “I don’t want to run around doing anything, I want to drink and have fun.” With that said, I told DH the responsibilities of a DOC and asked whether he thought it was necessary. When he said, “yes” I then asked whether it was in the budget. His response was “don’t worry I will work overtime.” I searched up and down for a DOC on this site and even asked various brides for price quotes and who their DOC was. I even did a vendor request and got many quotes. I contacted several vendors and inquired about their responsibilities as a DOC. Cindy covered all of the responsibilities that all DOC companies said they would handle but she did a whole lot more. What was most important to me carrying out the role of DOC is someone who would officially coordinate the rehearsal and someone to organize the day of. Cindy did just that and then some. My mother thought she was a blessing because my mother did not have to worry about packing up or getting anything at the end of the night. She was not only there for me but she was there for everyone in my bridal party. The week of, she was definitely on top of me with making sure I did things within my timeline. Put it this way, she was my drill sergeant the week of the wedding and I loved her for that. I know it is not in everyone’s budget but if you can find extra money, she is definitely worth it. Here she is helping my mom out with her dress.

Music: A++++
Music Mixed Intelligently
Raphael Gordon
(516) 818- 8848
Website: mmidjs.com

Long story short, I looked at another African-American, Westbury Manor bride review and knew I wanted to book Raphael. I contacted another DJ company while at a showcase but they did not seem interested in my business. It then occurred to me that I should stick with my instinct and contact Raphael. I spoke with Raphael over the phone and I told him about our personalities (that is DH and I) and what we were looking for in a DJ. I told him that we did not want any profanity in any song and wanted a mix but the majority of it needed to be reggae. During that call, he gave me his prices based on one DJ/MC and a meeting was arranged in Farmingdale so that DH and I could meet him. DH and I booked him on the spot due to his professionalism and personality. On the day of the wedding, he was awesome! During the announcements of the bridal party, he scored on everyone’s first and last name. I remember dancing to “Bad Romance” and “Tonight’s gonna be a good night” and danced those two songs as if I was at a club. Raphael did an excellent job and far exceeded my expectations due to the fabulous music mix and his excellent MC skills.

Makeup: A+++++
MAC Freelance Artist
Janie Richardson aka J. Rich
(646) 578-3030
Email: [email protected]

Initially, my plan was to go to a MAC make up counter on the day of. However, I found Janie on this website after a 2009 bride did a mini review of her bridal shower. I FM’d this bride and she told me that J. Rich works at MAC out of the Green Acres Mall. I emailed Janie and asked for pricing just to make sure, I could afford her and that she was able to do my makeup for my wedding. When everything was cleared, we set up a trial at the MAC store. She must have worked on me for a little over an hour. I saw what a great job she did and kept in contact with her. I eventually booked J. Rich in December and did not do any other trials. I made contact with her when I saw her on the job and she always asked me whether I wanted a second trial. I saw her work each time I went to the mall and saw her makeup that she had on her face and always told her “no.” I was pleased with what she did the first time and did not see that it was necessary for a second trial. I TRUSTED her craft. On the day of, she did my makeup and the makeup of the girls in my bridal party and she was FABULOUS!!!! We were all thrilled with the outcome. She was at my house prior to me even arriving and when I arrived home from getting my hair done, she was finishing up on my MOH. She gave my team and I such good vibes that we allowed her to pack up her things and even lock up the house door by herself because we all had to leave for church. Enough said her work speaks for herself!

Video: A+++
Halo Productions
Jose A. Lopez
(718) 781- 9644
Website: halovideo.com

I originally was not going to have video however, after I heard my grandmother who resides in London, England was not going to make my wedding I knew I had to have something. I found Halo Productions on this website and was happy with the price. I met with Jose at his home/office and I watched a random video of a wedding that he did at Westbury Manor. I was pleased with what I saw and booked him on the spot. My expectation for a video was simply for someone to professionally capture my day. On the big day, Jose was not intrusive and I did not see him in my face throughout the day. We did send him a special request after the wedding to not delete my reaction when one of my bridesmaids fainted at the church (she was ok after a while.) He was also accommodating when we asked him to delete a speech that was done at the reception. We recently received the video and he did a very good job.

Royalty Limousines: A+++++
315 Franklin Avenue
Franklin Square, NY 11010-1330
(516) 326-9100

I looked into a number of limo companies by calling and visiting each one. I also checked out limos at various bridal shows. When I saw what I wanted, I price checked with all the companies and I received the best price from Royalty. They first quoted us when we visited their garage and then saw them again at a Westbury Manor showcase. We booked with them on the spot and they gave us the same price as they gave us at the garage. Customer service with the representative at the showcase is kinda dry. We had three limos: A Chrysler 300, a princess Rolls Royce, and an eight passenger Lincoln. HOWEVER, the day of, all the drivers performed ABOVE and BEYOND. They were there earlier than expected, professional and very humorous. The rolls driver arrived well before the allotted time but I chalked it down that he considered the bad weather and gave himself plenty of time. At the church, my limo driver fluffed my dress and opened the doors with my DOC. Due to the nasty weather, the umbrellas were destroyed by the end of the night but all the drivers incredibly kept me and my bridal party dry. In spite of the severe wind and rain, I did not have one curl in my hair drop. The wind and rain was so bad that on the way from the church to Westbury Manor, the emblem on the rolls broke off. Travel time was also doubled but we all got there safely. At the end of the night, they promised to pick us up in a town car and surprisingly they came in the Chrysler we had earlier. Royalty may be cold with regards to customer service prior to booking BUT let me tell you, they far exceeded my expectations with keeping me dry and happy. I had a wonderful experience with them.

Westbury Manor: A+++++
1100 Jericho Turnpike
Westbury, NY 11590
(516) 333-7117

What can I say about Westbury Manor! I first dealt with Mel when looking at different vendors. I came with my team and Mel gave me different price options on a Saturday night on the dates/months I was interested in. Unlike some other wedding venues, Mel heard me when I told him I WANTED a Saturday night wedding. He told me I could have a cheaper wedding if I did other days but he did not push the other days on me. The one thing that I did not like when looking at the Westbury Manor’s rooms was the fact that we were allowed to see another wedding go on. Luckily, for us that did not happen on our day because our reception was on a Saturday at 8pm. When DH and I arrived in the Rolls, I felt like I was a celebrity because I was whisked away to the bridal suite and was well taken care of. The evening went so fast, so it was hard to take it in as I walked upstairs and then back down for our main entrance. With regards to food and drinks, it was over the top with quality and taste. For the most part, we were not present during the cocktail hour but when I did come downstairs, I did see food being passed around and drinks in people’s hands. Everything ran smoothly from the cocktail hour, to dinner to dessert. We had a cordial table with desserts however; many of our guests could not enjoy it due to being so full. The cake was definitely moist and fresh, I comment on this because I saw many negative reviews on the cakes made by Egra Bakery. I however, thought it was great and cannot wait until March to have some for our one-year anniversary. We had seven people that did not show due to weather, sickness and not being able to fly into JFK due to weather delays. Westbury Manor gave my parents the seven meals and apparently, it was a variety of all the dinners. I heard the food was also good the next day! I had no problems with Westbury Manor prior to and on the day of. The one hitch on the day of was due to all the rain, there was a small leak coming through the ceiling and I did see staff wiping the floors. I was actually dancing and saw someone wipe the floor but I danced right around the person. I also have to point out that my bridal attendant and Maitre D were great. Between my bridal attendant and my DOC, they packed everything up and placed it in my mother’s car. Love, Love, Love the Manor. We will be back for our one-year anniversary at the Polo Lounge!!

Honeymoon: Priceless

We departed JFK to St. Lucia the following day and was late taking off due to the residue of the storm from the previous day. We stayed for seven nights at Sandals Regency St. Lucia Golf Resort & Spa. The one thing I HATED about this resort was all the cats. I am terrified of them and actually left DH at the dinner table when I saw one get closer to our table. The staff was very accommodating on this issue for me and allowed us to have breakfast at the bar in the main pavilion instead of at the tables. We loved the Japanese and the Italian restaurants. MAKE SURE, you make dinner reservations the day you arrive for the Japanese and French restaurants. The pool area gets crowded early so get down there and reserve your chairs. The beach was OK and I thought the beach at the Grande was nicer. We had a minor issue with the guests next door (they were very loud early in the morning) and on the second day, we went to the front desk and they changed our room with no problems. All the staff are friendly and do everything possible to make you smile. There were certain parts of the trip that remain special to us and we are thankful that the Regency created them. With regards to St. Lucia, the island is absolutely beautiful and we were able to see it due to a cousin of mine knowing one of the licensed taxi drivers. His name is Tony and he can be reached at (758) 452-3081 if you would like to tour the island privately. We contacted him on our second day in St. Lucia and he told us that he charges $100 daily for both of us. While driving he explained the cultural aspects of St. Lucia, the educational system, the medical system, employment and government. He took DH and I out on two different days. On the first day, he gave us a tour of the island where he picked us up at the hotel at 9:30am and we arrived back at the hotel at 4:30pm. We were so tired after the first day that we actually cut the day short. The second day we called him and requested a half day where he took us to the zip lining and back to the hotel. When we arrived back to New York, I had this great tan and loved telling people that I got it from my honeymoon. DH and I will definitely check out other Sandals in the near future!

Hope you enjoyed my review. If you have any questions, feel free to FM.

Your wedding was amazing. It is thanks to you that I found 2 of my vendors, DOC and Make up. They are both amazing and you just made me feel extra confident that they will come through on my day. Thank you for your review

COngrats!!! Great review

I love, love, love Bobs Place...perfect place for a shower

your dress...your flowers

i love how you had your MOH in a different color and dress length...that way she really stood out but at the same time it worked with the whole color scheme

even though the weather look TERRIBLE on your day....you have some AMAZING pictures....i love the one where your showing off your boots and DH is laughing.....and the one with the limo driver trying to get you in the church safely even though the umbrella was no match for that wind

BEAUTIFUL WEDDING and CONGRATS AGAIN

OMG, I love this!!! Your make up was beautiful (I'm calling her) and I love the storm pics! You didn't look stressed at all, even with your veil blowing off!! I'm FMing you about Halo

Thanks for the review! congrats!!

ETA: My sister (MOH) wanted a shorter dress in a different color and I was afraid it wouldn't look right. Actually, your BP looked amazing and I love the way your MOH stands out!
