When Brad Pitt phoned his old friend, actress Catherine Keener, last month, it was only a matter of time before the subject got around to Jennifer Aniston, his ex-wife. 'Brad and Catherine were catching up — they haven't seen each other in a while,' a source tells Star, 'and Catherine mentioned seeing Jennifer at the Sundance Film Festival.' He and Catherine chatted for a while and then Brad hung up the phone — only to find 4- year-old Maddox, Angelina Jolie's son, whom Brad's in the process of adopting, standing there. After hearing the conversation, 'Maddox wanted to know who Jennifer was,' the source says.

Jen would probably have been horrified if she could have heard Brad's explanation. 'She's nobody,' Brad told Maddox. 'She's someone I used to be friends with.'

If that sounds a bit dismissive and insulting, it's no surprise to friends of the actor.

'Brad has zero interest in replaying the details about Jen with anyone,' says the source. 'He's acting like he wants to erase her from his memory.' And now, he's going to even greater lengths to make that happen.

Brad's next movie project will likely be the comedy Chad Schmidt, in which he's set to play two parts: an aspiring actor named Chad Schmidt, who moves to L.A. in the 1980s, and Brad Pitt — a fictionalized version of himself. A source says that while the original script made reference to Aniston (there was even talk of writing a part for her), 'all references to Jen have been removed at Brad's insistence.'

The movie will still make references to Brad's career, just not to his marriage. 'It's going to be a real insult to Jen,' says the source, 'since she was one of the first people to get excited about this project.'

Insiders also say the bust-up has led to fears that The View host's 15-month-old marriage is in crisis. An insider said: 'Star and Al had a loud fight that is causing the latest problems in their troubled marriage.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Sheryl Crow says she is recovering from breast cancer surgery and doctors have assured her she should make a full recovery.

Crow had the surgery in Los Angeles on Wednesday and is recovering without complications, her publicist, Dave Tomberlin, told The Associated Press on Friday.

``Her doctors think her prognosis is excellent,'' said Tomberlin.

In a statement posted on her Web site, Crow called the surgery ``minimally invasive'' and said she will be undergoing radiation treatment as a precaution. She said she benefited from early detection, and urged other women to have themselves checked.

``I am inspired by the brave women who have faced this battle before me and grateful for the support of family and friends,'' the 44-year-old rock star said. w Crow's former fiance, cycling champion Lance Armstrong, said in a statement Friday night that he was ``devastated'' by her illness.

``Once again I'm reminded of just how pervasive this illness is, as it has now touched someone I love deeply,'' said Armstrong, who is a survivor of testicular cancer.

Crow and Armstrong, 34, announced earlier this month they were splitting up. It would have been the Grammy-winning rocker's first marriage and the second for Armstrong, a seven-time Tour de France cycling champion.

Crow has said her most recent album, the Grammy-nominated ``Wildflower,'' was inspired by their relationship.

On her Web site she urged people with questions about cancer to contact the LIVESTRONG Survivor Care group that Armstrong founded.

``Based on my contact in recent days with Sheryl, her doctor and her family, I am confident that she will have a full and complete recovery and the world will be a better place for it,'' said Armstrong, who asked that Crow's fans keep her ``in your thoughts and prayers.''

The singer-songwriter and guitarist was raised in the small town of Kennett, Mo., where she sang in the local choir. A nine-time Grammy winner, she is best known for such hit songs as ``Soak Up the Sun'' and ``All I Want to Do.''

After work as a music teacher and backup singer, including a stint with Michael Jackson, she broke through with the 1993 multi-platinum recording ``Tuesday Night Music Club.''

Halftime: When it comes to divorce, timing is everything. Or if not everything, at the very least $425,000. According to Us Weekly, that's the amount Nick Lachey stands to garner if his separation from wife Jessica Simpson began Dec. 13, when she moved out, rather than Nov. 23, when she reported they split. The difference? Under California law, Nick can lay claim to half of the $850,000 she got from a Dec. 5 concert in Cincinnati if a judge agrees with his bustup timeline. He says he was trying to make the relationship work. Or maybe he was just doing the math. That's only one of the nasty breakup McNuggets in the magazine's cover story (and similar stories in People and Star). Jessica is reportedly fuming that Nick's recent divorce filing reserves the right to request spousal support. And Nick is also seeking a bling exemption so his 'miscellaneous jewelry' is considered 'separate property.' All in all, Nick stands to get half of what Jessica earned in their three years together (she made an estimated $35 million in 2005 alone). This is probably one halftime show Jessica could do without.
