Re: help! AACK - looks like IM cooking my first thanksgiving dinner......

Thanksgiving to me is the easiest holiday!!

Just make sure you organize yourself. Set the table the night before....defrost the turkey in plenty of time (and take the gizzards out!! )Keep your menu simple...turkey, potatos and a few veggies.

good Luck!
I think we are going to have Thanksgiving this year also!!

Re: help! AACK - looks like IM cooking my first thanksgiving dinner......

Nah I just know it.

for two people.. and enough for yummy leftovers.

3 Cans of french cut string beans. (drained) put in a glass casserole dish. Add 3/4can of cream of mushroom soup.stirr all together.

top off with French Fried Onions (you get these in the canned vegatable isle at the supermarket)

put in the oven on 350 for about 30 minutes

Re: help! AACK - looks like IM cooking my first thanksgiving dinner......

Apple crisp is very very easy,

Take 4-6 granny smith apples (depending on size)
peal them, core them and slice into half moons ( this is easier done with an apple peeler/slicer, that i got for 14.00 its WORTH the money!)

Put them in a pan glass pan is ok,or even a pie plate is better

Then pour about 3/4 of a box of Yellow cake mix on top of the apples.

then melt 1-2 sticks of butter and pour all of the top,

then pour cinnomin sugar (i like to make my own, then i can control the taste) all over the top

bake at 350 for about 20 minutes or until the sugar is getting crispy..

serve warm with ice cream or cool whip!

Re: help! AACK - looks like IM cooking my first thanksgiving dinner......

Turkey is easy to cook..

Breast side up or down..your choice. take the gizzards out, flush out with water... I put a little olive oil over the skin (helps it get crisper). And if your not someone who likes to BASTE like crazy if you put a piece of bacon over each leg and a couple across the top the grease self basts... it gets VERY juicy that way..

Cooking time will vary depending on how big your bird is..

Are you making stuffing in the bird or out? If its in, then its a longer cook time.

When I make candied yams I follow the recipe right off the Kraft marshmellows package.

Re: help! AACK - looks like IM cooking my first thanksgiving dinner......

Make sure you're getting all the gizzards and stuff out of the turkey (don't worry it is already cut out just wrapped up in paper in the bird) - last time I did Thanksgiving I thought I got them all out and I didn't. Oops.
Also anything you can do the day before (cranberry sauce if you make your own, or pies) do it then. Don't stuff bird with stuffing the night before you cook it - salmanella poisoning! Also best not to freeze bird (my mom did that once right after she was married and um..forgot to thaw it until that morning. They ate dinner at 10pm). Buy turkey few days before and keep in fridge.

Re: help! AACK - looks like IM cooking my first thanksgiving dinner......

it's really not bad.

If you do a lot of the preping the day before it's easier that day and less stressful. Peal, boil potatoes, prep yams/sweet potatoes, make/place orders or buy by tues or wed.

WINE & cheese, crackers for appetizer.

WINE, String bean casserol, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potates, biscuits/crousants, gravey, turkey.

Presentation is everything. Make a pretty centerpiece (you can get autum leaves on sale in stores/or $1 stores, place in a basket or cornacopia with some mini squashes and candles.

this is my first thanksgiving in 3 years that I am not in my apartment to cook my own for Fh & family

FH & I are trying to convince his mom to let us cook.

Tammy - Enjoy! Is it just the two of you or are you having company? This year is my third year in a row. It gets easier each year.

Re: help! AACK - looks like IM cooking my first thanksgiving dinner......

Mashed brown sugar sweet potatoes wih Marshmallow on top......oh, they're my favorite.

Also, you can make a fresh steamed bean dish (we use snow pean, wax beans & kidney beans with a little olive oil & garlic.)

hmmm. What kind of stuff are you looking for?
