Bridesmaid Dress Dilema

Bridesmaid dilemma

I haven't picked out the dress offically, but here is the problem. I have two MOH one that is a size 4 and one that is about a size 16. I also have 5 BMs, 2 which are thin and 2 about a size 14 and 1 that is heavy (actually now she is pregnant and due in Feb). But normally she is in the plus sizes.

I found a dress that I like in a magezine that goes with my dress.

It is strapless

I was thinking about picking out a color and the designer and letting everyone pick out a dress they feel comfortable wearing. I was a bridesmaid once where I felt uncomfortable the whole day, it was before I lost weight. I don't hink it's fair to have the girls spend all this money and feel uncomfortable.

Any suggestions?

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Dilema

I definitely think in this case you should let the girls pick their own dress. It would probably avoid unnecessary stress for you and anyone feeling uncomfortable about not liking the dress on them.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Dilema

I agree - with so many differently shaped brides, it will be most comfortable for everyone to pick out their own dresses.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Dilema

That is what my girls did. I think with the range of sizes in your party, it's a good option. The bonus is they will be in dresses they like and are comfortable in, and it's nice to make your BM's happy!

ETA: My girls went together, so their dresses coordinate well. No one is wearing anything radically different from the others.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Dilema

That sounds like a great idea. You sound like a very considerate person. I was in a friends wedding and I was so uncomfortable the whole night in my dress.

Edited to say: I looked at the dress on the link you posted and IMO that doesn't seem like a flattering dress unless you are a twig. I think giving them a color and a designer is a good idea.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Dilema

I agree too, with all that variety, pick a desiner and a color and let them pick the style. Alfred Angelo has nice separates that goes with many shapes and sizes you could check it out.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Dilema

I have seen weddings where the BM's wear different style dresses in the same color and it looks really beautiful.

I had all different sized BM's (from size 2-20) and three of them came with me to try on and pick out the dress, so they ended up settling on the same one for all of them, but we found something that looked nice on all of their body types.

Its really considerate of you to think of them.... good luck!

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Dilema

I'm letting my girls pick their own dresses for this very reason. I have a BM who is recovering from very aggressive chemo and radiation for Breast Cancer and is about a size 2 and another BM who is a very solid, athletic size 14. I picked the designer, color and fabric and they're picking their own.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Dilema

I had a similar situation, but only 2 BMs. 2 very different sizes. They picked out a Bari Jay dress, actually Dress style 616 :) But it was one with a 2-piece v-neck w/ sparkle/silver detailing around the neckline.

I think Bari Jay would be a great choice - they have a large selection of dresses & colors.

I'd get together as many as you can to try on. The larger girls may not feel so comfy in a strapless (my experience).. Although your dress is beautiful, i think you are right in having them preview it first

Good luck!

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Dilema

I was in a similar situation.. 8 girls all completely different.. One 6'4' another 5'2', 2 girls pregnate, all sooo different. I was going to do what you suggested, which I think is a great idea and I think they will all appreciate you allowing them to choose their dress..
Another thing you could do is what I wound up doing... Getting the BM dress in black (everyone feels comfortable in black) and they were all very happy!
