I hope thats the case because i don't have the money to get 2 passports right now! (how long do they take to get, in case)

does this apply to Jamaica too?

Best thing to do is either go on the state department's website: www.state.gov
and look and see what is required. Or talk to your travel agent. Or both.

Maybe it's a good idea to bring it anyway.

Re: I heard a rumor...

To be safe, get one anyway, it couldn't possibly hurt. You never know what moron you may meet in the airport...........I had someone in Trinidad tell me to go to the visitor live even though I have my Trinidad passport..

Re: I heard a rumor...

we were just in st.lucia 2 weeks ago and we didnt need a passport. i would check with your travel agent though or call the airports. we always bring our passport for every vacation anyway, so it might not hurt just to have them.

I answered my own question - -
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizens traveling as tourists may enter Jamaica with a U.S. passport or a certified U.S. birth certificate and current, government issued photo identification. Persons traveling with U.S. passports tend to encounter fewer difficulties upon departure than those who choose to use other documents. Visitors must have a return ticket and be able to show sufficient funds for their visit. U.S. citizens traveling to Jamaica for work or extended stays are required to have a current U.S. passport and visa issued by the Jamaican Embassy or a Jamaican Consulate. Travelers must pay a departure tax when leaving the country.

Im getting mine renewed - just sounds easier.

Re: I heard a rumor...

St. Lucia is it's own country, they use Eastern Carribean currency, but have their own government. Why don't you guys just get passports? It's much easier to travel with them and even if you have to change your name afterwards there is no additional charge.
You still have plenty of time, we got ours in about two weeks.

Re: I heard a rumor...

I heard something like that ... I believe Aruba is going to be requiring passports whereas in the past you only needed a birth certificate.

sorry - but don't most people have a passport anyway? I'm always surprised when brides say they didn't know they needed a passport. .

I don't have one. The only other country I've been to is cCanada & you just need a birth certificate for that if you are a US citizen.

Sometimes not even that if you drive & the border agent is lazy.

Re: I heard a rumor...

no, not everyone has a passport!
and your comment about brides not knowing they need one.... some countries don't require you to have one. Jamaica doesn't. So why should i spend the appx $160 between the two of us if we don't need it??

(turns out i may be able to just renew mine, its been only 12 years since i left the country)

Re: I heard a rumor...

I emailed someone the other day from Caribbean Tourism Organization
Experience the Caribbean , log on www.doitcaribbean.com
www.onecaribbean.org.

She wrote me back with this message about St Lucia:

Dear Scott
United States citizen & Canadian citizens must carry a valid ID and proof of return ticket. birth certificate & driver license or a valid passport.

So basically.....you do not need a passport if you are travelling to St Lucia.
