how much did u pay for todders first shoes?

I heard that once J is really walking she needs to wear goodshoes and not sneakers

there are a lot of really pretty stride right shoes...

what have you discovered with your children? shoes are best? how long do they last in one size ( i heard 3 months) and what is a reasonable price range??

Re: how much did u pay for todders first shoes?

Definitely get something that has good arch support for J. I've been buying Stride Rite b/c that is the brand that has been around the longest. But, they are not cheap! Paul's first pair cost close to $50. We have signed up for a 'frequent shopper' club at the bootery where we buy his shoes, and that helps to discount the price.

I buy his occasional shoes from regular discount stores - like Kids R Us, Marshall's etc. These are really just ones that he will wear once in awhile, so I don't want to spend a lot of $$ on them.

Paul was consistently outgrowing his shoes every 3 mos. until he reached about 19 mos. old....the gentleman who fits the shoes at the store said that we should start to get a slightly longer amount of time with each pair.

Also - the Stride Rite chains do not ever do coupons - they only run sales once or twice a year. The privately owned bootery we frequent sends us a coupon every 3 mos, so that helps. Just FYI.

I received a $5 Stride Rite coupon in the mail 3 weeks ago.

Re: how much did u pay for todders first shoes?

Same here. I buy Stride Rites too, I think Lukes were about $45. He wore them for 4 months and now he's onto pair #2

Get on the SR mailing list. Also, when I got his shoes, they gave me the $5 of coupon for the next visit (chain store-Roosevelt Field). The store closer to us that carries SR is a privately owned one like Claud mentioned and they gave me a card when you buy a few pairs, I think it's 5 or 6, you get a pair 1/2 off. But I also received in the mail from them a postcard for 10% off, probably around the 3 month mark when they figured it's shoe shopping time again.

Re: how much did u pay for todders first shoes?

I got Annalise Preschoolians (preschoolians.com) for her first pair since they had a promotion running. They were only $10, normally about $40. There was no tax, no shipping. They sent me a $10 coupon with the shoes so I bought her next pair from them too for about $40. I loved their customer service so much. That is why I used them again. I bought her other shoes at Marshalls and Target for 'dress up', etc. I got her first pair of Keds at Nordstroms since they were cheaper than Stride Rite, but Marshalls has them sometimes too. Nordstrom also has great customer service. Expect to get 3 months out of the shoes. Annalise got about 3.5 months. Preschoolians will send you a larger size for free if they outgrow them in less than 3 months.

I got a flyer/card type thing from them, announcing their sale...but no coupon. I did add my address to their mailing list, and when I asked the guy from the store if they will send me coupons, he said, 'No, we don't do that. But, we'll let you know when we are having sales.'

Perhaps each chain is different, but my personal experience is that I get more coupons and more savings at the privately owned kids shoe store. JMO.

Re: how much did u pay for todders first shoes?

We paid 12 bucks, they were Payless. Both Geno's ped and his pediatric orthorpedist said that they are perfectly fine for toddlers. Thank God cause I almost threw up in the Stride rite store when I saw what they charged!!
BTW - He wears sneakers at Day Care and when we go to the park.
And his sandals just about everywhere else!!

Whatever works! Also, the privately owned stores remind me of when I was a kid going to the local mom and pop store, and surprisingly I think its still there!

Re: how much did u pay for todders first shoes?

I brought my nephew his first pair of real shoes at Stride and paid about $50 and that was 4 years ago. My Mom even brought my first pair either there or buster brown...do they even have buster brown stores anymore?

Re: how much did u pay for todders first shoes?

We also paid $45 or so for JAs first pair of shoes. I was going to buy them in Stride Rite also, but fell in love with a cute pair at a shoe store. They are made in Spain, good quality...

Its a shame they cost so much

BriarRose- My MIL works for therapists (phys therapists, behavioral therapists etc etc) and she's been told from them that Payless shoes are perfectly fine. I was surprised to hear that also. And my MIL is not one to preach saving money, shes quite the opposite, so coming from her, I was really surprised.
BUT I have to say for the same price as Payless ($15?) you can get a 'better shoe' at Marshalls or TJMaxx.
Ive gotten JA New Balance Sneakers AND Stride Rite Shoes at TJMaxx Both for $20 each or a few bucks under $20. Its just hit or miss, you have to luck out and find the size youre looking for.
