Is it considered tacky to register for children's books?

I know this may sound like a dumb question, but I wanted to have a small collection of childrens books soon after the baby is born.

In the past though, I can't remember seeing this on other women's registries....maybe because it's more of a gift than 'must haves'?

What do you ladies think? Is it tacky to do this?

NO! I registered for the Baby einstein DVD's - same kind of thing..

Let me tell you - I got NO books - can you believe that?

I always by books for baby showers. Sometimes I do baskets of all the classics (goodnight moom, giving tree, chicka chicka boom boom, etc) or just one or two select books to add to a gift.
Go for it! It's so important to have a library for the babies to get interested in!

ETA: I always loved my books as a kid!

No way. I registered for a few and got at small library's worth. For Xmas we asked for them too when people wanted to know what to get. We prefer books to toys and so does she. Annalise got over 50 for Xmas and now has about 100. They are for all ages and some she has outgrown already. We read a few each night and she never gets bored since she has so many. They are great vocabulary builders. She says close to 40 words at 15 months and I attribute it to picture books.

I do not think it is tacky at all. I loved my books as a kid. For my SIL baby shower, we included a request as part of the invitation to bring a book for the 'Baby Library.' Sort of like a wishing well gift. It worked out well because now my niece has a great collection.

Absolutley not!! Why would anyone mind buying something that you and your child will get so much enjoyment from and that they will carry with them for a lifetime!! I love when my son climbs into my lap asking me to read to him. And I'm sure all your loved ones would want you to have that joy as well.

Its not tacky at all. Childrens books are a great item. I mentioned to my SIL about wanting to start a library for the baby when I was preggo and she really came up with a great idea - she and my other SILs planned the shower and had a 'reading well' where they asked everyone to bring a book (instead of a wishing well) I got a ton of kiddy books and love them all. Some people wrote something personal in them and I treasure them even more. Which reminds me, I'm still waiting for my teenaged niece to come watch Lukie and read the book to him that she gave me

Maybe you can drop a hint to the powers that be...

I don't think it's tacky at all!!! For my shower I told my mom I didn't want a traditional wishing well. I wanted a book well. Each guest brings a book and writes a message to the baby. I just thought that'd be such a sweet memory for my baby.

Wow - thanks for the feedback!

I guess I only wondered about it because I couldn't remember seeing any books on recent registry lists.....but I love that reading time just before you put the baby down to sleep (I used to do this when babysitting all the time

Once you mentioned this, I now remember hearing about a friend who did this for her friend's shower! Very cute idea.

I registered for some books because I too would like to have nice collection for the baby. DH loves to read and I know he (and I!) will enjoy reading to the little one.
So IMO I don't think its tacky either

Not at all tacky!!! We didn't register for them because we knew my mom and aunt would be giving us tons and boy did we get a library! We have books that will take him through 4th grade! I have often given people baskets full of books as a gift and I always get tons of thanks. I'd say go for it. If you need any book recommendations, I've got plenty for you!

No way not tacky at all! I registered for tons of books, DVD's and so forth (got them all). Register for whatever you want. If you get it, you get it.

But Mommy went out and made up for it.

Teri, I think it's a cute idea! My best friend is having a baby in a few weeks and for her shower I bought her over $200 worth of children's books! She's one of my oldest friends and we were always such bookworms growing up. Plus, we always said we wanted to write a children's book together. So I bought a whole bunch and put them in a nice basket... she could barely lift it, but I think she was really happy!

Don't forget to get something by Shel Silverstein (thus, my avatar!)
