Heard this on the radio.. what a lot of reception halls are doing for Sept. 11th.
This year, September 11th falls on a Saturday. Many catering/reception halls are offereing specila packages or deals to bring in people to have their weddings on that day.I heard this on WCBS this morning @ 4am getting ready for work.
M answer.. ABSOLUTELY NOT. I would never have my Wedding on that horrible day. I feel bad for people's B-Days who fall on that day.
I just could never.. who cares about whatever any hall could offer.
PLUS -- I find it VERY tacky to make a deal to entice people to have their wedding on that day. Spet 11th can never/will never be the same as it was before 2001.

Re: Heard this on the radio.. what a lot of reception halls are doing for Sept. 11th.
The thing is that some people may want to make the day not so horrible or bring happiness to a horrible day...I know brides here who are getting married on that day....iits no different then Pearl Harbor day( how many people know when that is any more?) or the day of the Oklahoma bombing..
in time while it will always be a horrible day for us who lived thru it, it will eventually be a day that all of us dont feel as strongly as today, those affected will but will our children?
..I agree its a bad day for many memory wise and thats why halls are having trouble but I can understand why some choose it.

My son turns 5 on Sept.11. So to me thats a special day. I remember the day it happened- I got called to ground zero for the search and rescue. I missed my son's 2nd birthday. That was a rough day for me , missing his birthday, and losing alot of my friends. So it has alot of different meanings to me. I guess its a hard day to book. I know i would never book that day!

i'm leaving for my wedding/honeymoon on Sept 11-- we have to be there to do paperwork in italy on the 13th, we really had no choice! i honestly don't see a problem with doing something positive on that day. everyone remembers and tributes in their own way. But do i think people should use it as an excuse to get a discount? absolutely not.

I totally hear you, dm24angel.
But I think that because the wound is still so fresh in the American psyche.. especially us because we're all from the NY area.. that there is a very tender and sensitive feeling about it.. and I agree a lot of people years after Pearl Harbor got married on Dec. 6th.
By and large, I think you're correct.
I understand that a reception hall can afford not to throw a September Saturday away.
But sometimes there's the question of.. is this the right thing to do? If I were them, I just take whatever business I can get on that date and make no specials to get it booked.
However, I'm a techie and not a caterer.. maybe if I were, I would think differently.
It just seems tacky.

Re: Heard this on the radio.. what a lot of reception halls are doing for Sept. 11th.
I see your point completly...I think they would have to offer a discount though just to do the business on that day, truth be told, thats what they( catering industry) cares about right?I would have 'entertained' the thought of having it on that day for a discount( I'll be honest) but my company was based in WTC and we lost some people and a lot of friends would not come due to memorials etc but I would not mind having my wedding on that day truthfully...only because I was not personally affected, though liek I said others were and I completly care about their emotions as well ............I I think its different like you said because we live in NY and it does seem 'uncaring and cold' the way the halls are going about the discounting...

Re: Heard this on the radio.. what a lot of reception halls are doing for Sept. 11th.
I understand about some couples wanting to associate that day with something good. While I did not lose anyone close to me in the tragedy, I know too many that did. Years from now maybe that date won't sting as much, but in a way I hope it will. It's too significant a loss to be trivialized by a long weekend or a department store sale, like the others.I think if the halls need the business that badly then they should open their doors to their local firefighters, police and whoever else is feeling sullen or inadequate that dayand give them a handshake and a free meal.

Don't be embarrased! The only reason why I remember is because I had to watch Tora Tora Tora! in the 10th grade. Lot's of things happened on lots of different dates, I always hated that portion of tests, as long as you remember does it matter a 200 years later of the exact date??
Sure Sept 11th will be with US-YOU & ME - for the rest of our lives, but I'll bet you that your great-grandchild won't care so much about the date as much as the event itself!

I don't see why people shouldn't be married on September 11. It was a horrible day for our nation and the best way to show the a$$ wholes who did it to us is to be alive and kicking and to celebrate life. And starting a new family is definitely up there on my list of celebrating life!

I have mixed feelings about couples getting married on that day.I know that my hall offered a discount for that day - but it wasnt an option for me. But I can see why some people would take it cause the place is pretty expensive.

Re: Heard this on the radio.. what a lot of reception halls are doing for Sept. 11th.
To have a 9/11 wedding to create happy memories and honor those who were so tragically lost is one thing.Having a 9/11 wedding just to save a few bucks seems a bit tacky, and mercenery. IMO, it is turning the tragic deaths of so many people into a profit
It has a very high 'ick' factor for me, which is why I would never do it. But, if someone chooses that day, more power to them.

Re: Heard this on the radio.. what a lot of reception halls are doing for Sept. 11th.
Something to think about...is the hall offering discount prices any different then the airlines offering discount prices that day? The halls need to get the date filled and I don't think it's wrong of them to offer discounts for that day. They know that people are hesitant to have their wedding on Sept. 11. So they cut a couple of bucks off the price per head to try and get the date filled. September is a huge month for weddings and I can't blame catering halls for not wanting to lose business on a Saturday.Personally if it were an option for me I don't think I would choose 9/11. But there are some people that it didn't affect as much as others.

Re: Heard this on the radio.. what a lot of reception halls are doing for Sept. 11th.
I guess it all depends on how closely you were affected by 9/11. I guess for those that marry on 9/11 they somehow turn it around into something positive to celebrate. This is one of those 'to each his own' type things.Welcome New Vendors
