Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
What states appeal to you and why? Have you done research and decided where you would like to end up?
Lots of my friends and leaving LI and moving to Virgina.

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
We want to move to North Carolina. South Carolina as our second choice. The weather is really nice there, besides the occasional hurricane. We also would be able to drive to Long Island in 1 day if we had to. We have some family there (my FH's sister and her family and an aunt and uncle from my family). We would be able to get a huge house there for less than $200K that would be the same as a $400K plus house here. Plus a lot of property, more spread out. We would still be near the ocean. My FH's job can transfer there at the same salary and there are plenty of jobs for me... I looked on careerbuilder and I wouldn't be taking too much of a pay cut. Friends of ours also want to move down there with us.

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
We considered Houston Tx. But some how we ended up buying here on the Island. Will it be for good, I don't know. Maybe after visiting Texas this coming Dec. we will consider it. FH has family there and it is so affordable. Living in NY just makes things so tight with money. Why suffer all our years is the way I am thinking. We could offer our kids such a better life down there! Besides, I love the HOT SUN!!! It makes be more energised to be movitvated. These long winter months don't help with weight gain.

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
Georgia....
DH sister has been down there for 2 years already and LOVES it. We loved it when we visited. The county they are in is BOOMING....new schools are going up everywhere so there is a HUGE demand for teachers. Another factor is the way of life...it's slower, people are nicer. Plus, there are a TON of transplanted NYer's in the Atlanta area.
We have friends in DC, NC, FL, one couple is leaving for VA beach....no one is staying here.

We're most likely moving to California soon, but that's because DH got a good job offer there.
I have mixed feelings about it, I want out of NY bad but now that it's a reality, it's a little scary. but exciting too.

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
We are looking into NJ. There are some great areas there that are even closer to the city than areas of LI, and are more resonable. It is so hard! We are also looking into the DC area...

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
Fh wants to move to NH or Maine. I like the little I've seen up there, but I don't thin I could handle the winter & I'm not sure if I want to move away from the family. I also like Maryland & NC, but FH thinks its too hot. I have a feeling it will be Westchester or LI forever.

we're looking into the DC area (Maryland or Virginia) Most of our friends have moved there already, and FH could probably find a job in his field very easily there. Hoping to move by the end of the year.

We would love to move to N. or S. Carolina or Virginia. We are east coast people so that narrows it down alot. I would love Florida but I am too young for that.

FH wants to move down by his parent in Hilton Head Island SC. But I can't see leaving my family up here but I know down there we would be able to get a house quicker than up here!! I will be 40 when I finally get a house!! That is crazy considering I'm only 27!!! We will see!! I love Long Island to much!!

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
Sooner or later yes, we're moving out of NY
Most likely it will be California or Texas.
I like California (just East of San Fran) but Jim's never been there.
Both of us love the Austin - San Antonio area. For now though I get the money here. Once I finish school and get promoted to AVP I can move easier. We take our pay with us, so living in Texas looks a heck of a lot better than Calfornia.

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
i don't ever want to move, but my brother and sister have been talking a lot about moving to the williamsburg, va area. there's just something about ny, i can't leave.
for those thinking of the dc area, i lived there for three years, and all i can say is visit first! for at least a week if possible and attempt to drive around (it's worse than ny traffic in most places). also if you'll be commuting by metro try out riding it during rush hour (not fun!!!). a few of our friends live down there and absolutely love it, but i hated it, so all i'm saying is make sure you fully check it out before deciding, it's not for everyone. oh and the beach is 3 hours away

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
Thanks for all the feedback. I love LI, but I am frustrated that two decent salaries it is IMPOSSIBLE to buy a nice house. I really dont want to leave, but I have it in the back of my mind. It is just so hard for young couples to make it here!

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
I personally hate living on LI. Things have changed a lot since I was a kid. I have always likes Florida, for $200k you can get a castle with an inground pool.
It KILLS me though how much I will miss my family, especially my brother. Who knows I guess.

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
Christy,
Move down to Florida! You love disney and can live near it! Plus as an added bonus you can hang w/ me Living in Florida is not so bad and I thought I would really miss my family alot but I realized througout the winter someone is always coming down to visit! I try and go up once during the summer and also at a holiday. If there are any kids in your family people will want to come to disney so there is another way to see people.

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
I grew up in NY, lived in Virginia for several years and just returned to NY a couple of years ago. I had reverse culture shock coming back! I love being closer to my family, but actually miss VA! Northern VA, D.C. area are really great (still pretty expensive). I think cost of living in VA is great for what you get in a lot of areas. And...you're right...there are lots of NY/NJ transplants which makes it easy to find like-minded people and adjust. I would love to move back to VA, but my FI will have none of if (job-related).
