Important question about changing your name please help...
I have to change my ID to my married name for travel purposes...I am planning on going to DMV tomorrow to do it. my question is, do I have to go to Social Security first??? I called DMV this morning and they told me that I didn't have to change that before change my ID but that I would have to do it eventually and to not take a long time. What do you ladies think? Have any of you done this?

Re: Important question about changing your name please help...
I didBut I went to DMV first with my marriage license, Birth certificate, SS and old ID (all of which had my maiden name on them).
After that, I went to SS office.
This was the Hempstead DMV.
As in anything with DMV I find its more or less up to the mood of the agent behind the little counter.

Excellent point. It all depends on their mood. Should I tell them that I haven't done my SS card yet when I get to the counter at DMV.If I get done early enough I'll go to SS after I am done at DMV

I was going to say the exact same thing about the MOOD of the person, which is also why I would do SSN first (JMO and this is what I did).As far as name & address for DMV, it's all the same form.
Good luck!!

agreed. I know it says 10 days but how do they know when you really moved? Mine still shows a P.O. BOX!
Which never 'moves'.

I would go to SS first but it's just that I don't have the time to wait 10-14 days for my SS card to come in and then go to DMV.Can I go to SS first and then DMV on the same day?

You don't need to change your SS card before going to DMV. I went to DMV right after the wedding and just went to SS 3 weeks ago to change.

SSN info downloads in the computer overnight (so they told me not to go the same day to DMV) and they give you a paper that shows you made the change with them. And yes, I paid cash at DMV.

I'm going to DMV first and then SS. I've spoken to some people who said that they did the same thing. My best friend told me that when she got married she changed her drivers license to her new last name and she still hasn't changed her SS card. So it looks like It's ok for me.

I went to SS first and then DMV. They both took about 10 mins. It was painless.
I paid cash at the DMV, it cost me 12.50

Update! Important question about changing your name please help...
I went DMV this morning and the line outide just to get in was horrendous. Luckily I was able to call DMV and get someone on the phone and asked if I could change my name and address on my ID at the DMV express building and they said yes and so I went to the express one and was done in less than hour. I paid $13.00......Just to change a little information on your ID card....jeesh!Then I went to the SS building and got that changed too.....
So now I should be fine right....
