QOTD: If you had to name the time when you came closest to death, when was it?

I choked on an apple at work last year and a co-worker had to heimlich me. I totally wasn't getting any air in and my lips started to go blue. I remember everyone coming out of their offices and just looking at me. I was thinking...somebody do something!!!! Finally, one woman did. I'm still afraid of choking! Of course, the ironic parts are that I spent most of my day working with children on feeding and swallowing therapy and the 'how to help a choking victim' signs were hung on the wall outside my room, right where I was choking!

I was in a skiing accident about five years ago. I was knocked unconscious on the slope, kind of a long story, but my family was on the lift and they saw the whole thing from above. Everyone thought I was dead. It was really scarey. I haven't gone skiing since.

As a kid i was a big Met fan and when i was 12 my friends mom got us tickets to see my VERY FIRST GAME!!! I was sooooo excited, we made a banner (back then they did that all the time). I started getting stomach pains but i figured it would go away.
Got to Shea, GOT GARY CARTERS autograph!!!! Then immediately ran to the bathroom and threw up. I had to go to the shea infirmary and they called my dad. He rushed me to the doctors from there i went by ambulance to the hospital
Long story short (well not really), next day i had surgery to remove my appendix...during surgery after the surgeon took it out, it burst in his hand!

Scary part is, they weren't going to do the surgery at first because my white blood cell count was normal!!!!

Oh and in the process of that night, i lost the autograph

Probably one of the 7 times I had scarlet fever as a child.

When I came home on a break from college to find out my mom had bought 2 cats. I was so allergic. My throat closed up and I was breathing through a hole the size of a straw. I was in the hospital for 3 days. They told me that if the ambulance came 5 seconds later I would have died.

White water rafting. We hit a boulder with our raft and my dad got knocked into the water but I was able to climb onto the boulder.

I panicked because I couldn't find my dad so I was scrambling around and I finally saw him, and he waved to let me know he was alright, so I relaxed a little.

Well, I relaxed a little too much and slipped off the rock and got swept under it.

Unfortunately there was a ledge under the water and I got stuck under it and my life jacket kept bringing me up and bashing my head into it. I swear I thought I was dead - I couldn't get out. Somehow, the water shifted and I was swept out from under and brought in by the river guide.

Needless to say, I've had some issues with water since then.

One of the worst things is that someone was taping the whole thing for a program. We watched it later and it was like: Lauren's on the rock...pan right....pan left....where's Lauren?.....still can't see her....still can't see her.....STILL CAN'T SEE HER....and then I pop up down stream!!.

I went with a friend to The Granite resort when I was in 8th grade in March and there was a frozen lake. I thought it was a great idea to walk across it. When I got about 10 feet from the shore on the other side I started hearing weird creaking and cracking sounds when all of a sudden I fell through the ice. Everytime I got my arms up on a solid part of the ice, it broke and I went under again. So I broke my way to the land and ran back to the resort.



That and the time I went to the beach with my ex boyfriend and we went swimming and all of a sudden he dunks me and I think he is jsut playing around but he was drowning and panicking. Basically he was using me to keep his head above water. I passed out and if it wasnt for a boogie-boarder out there that saved me, I wouldnt be here.

When I was a kid I was playing chicken in a pool with some other kids. When the kid on my shoulders leaned forward to battle the other kid, she pushed my face in the water - I thought I was going to drown! I finally got her off of me, but boy that was scary.

2/26/93 - My 25th birthday and the first WTC attack ... the bomb filled van was one floor below me ... the crater of the explosion was about 100 feet from my office.

2 yrs ago i was driving down crossbay blvd. and i got into a car accident that totaled my car. I was extremely lucky to walk out of there with a sprained thumb. My seat belt saved my life.

Senior year in hs I had phneumonia really bad. I swear there were angels/spirits helping me when no one got home until my mom came in bc they were telling me not to move..so weird i remembe it so clearly!

When I was little, I had some weird liver disease (they never did figure out what it was exactly) where I wouldn't stop throwing up. The doctors said if my parents hadn't brought me to the hospital when they did, I wouldn't have made it.

It would have to be the time a truck ran a red light and hit my car. The car did a 180 and wound up on the opposite side of the street. Luckily, he hit my passenger side and I was alone. The paramedics said that if he had hit my side I probably would of died.

New Year's Eve (daytime) 1999 - the end of the century. I was visiting my mom and brother in Florida. It was prob around 11 am and we were all just lazing around. Suddenly we heard popping noises and I thought that some kids were just setting off firecrackers in anticipation of New Year's Eve. My mom lived in a ground floor condo that overlooked the parking lot and as a lot of homes on florida do - every room had glass doors leading to the outside (in other words, no solid walls or protection).
When we looked up we saw, through the doors, a guys in the parking lot with a HUGE gun shooting out car tires, screaming, and stumbling around like he was drunk. We also heard screaming coming from another apartment. We literally froze, because the guy saw us staring at him through the window and then just dropped down. We didn't know where to go because everyone room had glass doors in it that he could have shot through. The three of us ran into the bathroom since it didn't have windows and locked ourselves in there, but I remember thinking how trapped we were. We had grabbed the cordless phone and called 911. We are screaming at the lady that they have to send someone and I remember feeling how useless 911 was because they couldn't help us in there. My brother and mother realize that the deranged guy is the former boyfriend of one of their neighbors - a doctor, mind you. So we continue to hear screaming and gunshots - we don't know if he is killing her, coming through our glass doors to kill us. I call 911 again and we are screaming at them and i just totally remember thinking - this is it - we are going to die - I am never going to see the new millenium - and my life literally flashed before my eyes because it's like you say to yourself - I am about to be murdered.

My brother wants to leave the bathroom and go out and try and tackle the guy because he is scared what is going to happen to the neighor and I was literally laying on top of him to stop him from leaving the bathroom. What finally ended up happening was that the guy ended up shooting and killing himself in front of the neighbor. Happy New Year.

I'm sorry this was so long - I haven't talked about it in a long time and I guess when I saw the question, I had to get it off my chest. Thanks for listening.

When lightning struck the ground 6 feet in front of me. I was only 7 years old.

12/21/01-- I came home from Japan to visit my parents and my dad had the roofs redone that summer, but the contractor was just some guy my dad was trying to help out with money and he didn't do a very good job. He didn't put the ventilation holes in the roof for the heaters. I was asleep in the back room and my mom cranked the heat so I wouldn't freeze and I woke up to sister's stereo alarm blasting, I got up to shut it off and that was the last thing I remember until my dad was standing over me, Asking me what happened.

I had carbon monoxide poisioning. My level was 33% anything greater than 20 is toxic, anything greater than 50 is lethal. I ended up with a broken jaw, BP vertigo, several cuts on my lips and a huge gash in my tongue. Oh and I had to sit in the hyperbaric chamber for two hours. Glad to still be alive.

I stepped on a glass when I was in sixth grade.It severed some tendons, & It came a few millimeters away from severing my main artery in my foot. I lost a ton of blood and they thought I was going to need a transfusion. The only surgeon in the hospital was a heart surgeon (thank God) and he was able to re attach my tendons and stitch me up pretty well. I remember being in the hospital bed, and my sister staring into my foot while the DR was trying to place my foot back together, and him pointing out, tendon, artery and I was like Bleccccck
