Around what age do puppies stop biting?

Chewie LOVES to bite us. I guess the little cutie is teething. When does it end?

Re: Around what age do puppies stop biting?

I don't know the exact age, but my friend's dog stopped at just under a year. Get Chewie a soft chew toy, like a Kong or something. I would be good to train him not to bite now as opposed to later on.

Re: Around what age do puppies stop biting?

The Kong toys are good because you can stuff the center with treats. The more he plays with it, the more treats he gets. It's a little reward for 'good' biting. It takes time, but he'll get it - don't worry. You are still a great puppy-mommy.

Re: Around what age do puppies stop biting?

Just a warning about Kongs....my little Rascal chewed a piece of a Kong and it blocked his intestines. We had to rush him to the ER to get 3/4 of his intestines removed. Rascal's not like other dogs though. He's VERY chewy ... and he's almost 4. We are not supposed to give him any chew toys but we still give him the EXTRA DURABLE nylabones and play fetch with him and put it away afterwards.

Re: Around what age do puppies stop biting?

These toys have got to be better than me running away from Chewie saying 'No bite' and him still chasing me to bite me. LOL.

Re: Around what age do puppies stop biting?

Since he's a small dog I doubt he will bite though the 'indestructable' toys while under supervision. I say 'indestructable' in quotes b/c my mother's black lab works her way through everything!

Rascal's an 11 pound rat terrier and eats 'indestructable' toys all of the time. He actually had two surgeries for this already. Now we are so careful and nervous all of the time.

Re: Around what age do puppies stop biting?

After their adult teeth come in, dogs chew on things to 'set the new teeth into the jaw' and they like alot of different textures. The kong is a great idea and also the nylabones. People have also suggested to take a washcloth, soak it in water and then freeze it and let the puppy chew on that. My dog kind of shredded the washcloth but I think pugs are more gentle than Jack Russells.

Re: Around what age do puppies stop biting?

My JRT stopped biting after we had him less than amonth. He has to be taught not to bite. Evry time he bit us we were veyrstern and said 'no bite!' If that didn't work, if he bit us we would ignore him for awhile. Once we got inot training, we also did a gentle collar tug. By the time he was 3 mos old he didn't bite anymore. On the other hand, my mom ha s a 1 yr old yorkie, who she won't discipline who still bites...but her teeth are so small no one cares.

Re: Around what age do puppies stop biting?

My Lab was a big biter when he was a puppy. He stopped around 4 or 5 months, I think. Now chewing on things is a different story. Puppies go through that phase, but they also tend to go through the chewing phase again between 9 months and a year old.

Re: Around what age do puppies stop biting?

Our lab stopped at around 1 year but he still acts up from time to time. It helps that everytime he acted up we gave him bone to chew instead of our hands.
