Calling all NYC Teachers....

I went to Brooklyn Board of Ed. on Wednesday for an interview and I was told that there were no elementary school teacher positions in the Bronx, Queens, or Manhattan.

Is this true???

I am extremely furious as I feel I was discriminated against esp. with some of the questions I was being asked.

Anyone know who I can contact to report this??? I called the Chancellors office, but no luck.

Re: Calling all NYC Teachers....

As far as positions go, my aunt was trying to get a job and she was told the same thing about no jobs available.

How were you discriminated against? You can FM if you like.

Re: Calling all NYC Teachers....

I have a couple of friends looking for jobs, it is true, there are NONE! However, a lot happens in August, people move, change jobs, etc. I would keep calling the DOE everyday.

I wish you the best of luck

Re: Calling all NYC Teachers....

I find it REALLY hard to believe that there are NO openings. People are not exactly banging down the doors to work in NYC schools. I work in a very well-run middle school that happens to be in a bad area, and we ALWAYS open with at least a few vacancies. So I am sure that there are less organized schools that need people. Plus, people always leave positions at this point in the summer to take jobs in the suburbs. I'm curious about the kinds of questions you were asked- you must have some kind of recourse. Maybe the UFT can be of some help to you.

Re: Calling all NYC Teachers....

It is extremeyl difficult to get a job this year. I just got 2 offers myself, however, but not through BOE, through the indivivual schools. One of the principals actually told me that she doesnt let the BOE know of her vacancies because she wants to fill thm herself and not have the BOE place someone. My advice would be to call individual schools and see if there are any last minute openings. Good luck.

Re: Calling all NYC Teachers....

When I was applying for an elementary position a few years back, I was going from school to school dropping my resume off in person. For some reason they always say that the BOE is hurting for teachers and now they say they aren't hiring!! I actually got my Speech Therapist position for the BOE by going down to Court Street in person to see what they could do for me. At that time I was applying for elementary ed.. Luckily I am dual certified and there were opening positions for Speech Teachers. LOTS of Luck to you all, and don't give up!

Re: Calling all NYC Teachers....

With all of the budget cuts on LI a lot of LI teachers lost their positions... sometimes late in the year. I guess many of them have had to go to the city so that might be contributing to the problem. I teach in Seaford and we had it really bad we have less than 3,000 kids in the whole district and they were threatening to lay off 60 teaching positions... about 20 teaching/staff positions were eliminated. Our budget only passed on the second vote by 22 votes. I feel like the community is 'flipping us the bird'. And this is from a community where only about 20% of all adults have a college education according to the 2000 census.
