Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

Sorry ladies i am being so annoying about this. but my #1 choice is so far away. there are so many if's but it perfect. do i care if it is so far away???? Well it is about a bit over an hour from my house??? everyone is comming from western nassau county and it is all the way out east baiting hollow (Giorgios) The wedding would be in january at night. So does it really matter how far the place is for my guests or not?We are having the ceremony and reception at the same place. thanks ladies.

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

Where is your ceremony??? If your guests are comng from Western Nassau it may be a little far.

FYI, I had the same problem with Giorgio's. I loved it, but it was just too far for everyone to get to. Although, if they truly care about you and want to be there, they'll travel as far as they have to.

I ran into the same problem. I was looking to have it at the aquarium, but too many people complained it was too far.

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

I originally wanted to get married at my church in E. Northport, then have the reception at a vineyard out east, but they are all at least an hour from the church. My husband and I decided this was too far so we went with something closer.

I think you should have it where you want. If people want to really be there for you, then will be.

I agree. My FBIL is from Queens and my FSIL was from Massapequa. They had the church in Massapequa and the reception on Shelter Island. Guests had to trek to Massapequa, then take a ferry to Shelter Island. In addition the last ferry was at 11 p.m. and the wedding wasn't over until midnight so most of the guests planned ahead and decided to STAY. However, there was a 2-night minimum for all hotels on the island.

So this is how I figure it: If guests were willing to travel to the last exit before London for FBIL they would have no problem wherever FH & I decided to have our reception!

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

I had the same problem!
I wanted a Vineyard wedding in the worst way but I also had to be married in the church I grew up in.

I figured where the ceremony is was more important to me than where the reception is so we opted for something closer.
I think 45 minutes from Church to reception is the cut off.

However..... If you really want it, do it!
In the end you may just have less people at the ceremony.

We live in Queens as do most of our guests so we didnt even bother to look too far out east in Nassau.

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

I also wanted to go out east to a Vineyard or to Giorgios, but in the end we went to CLM because it was closer. The only thing I would worry about is that it is January, and there is a strong possibility of a snow storm...which could make many of your guests not show at the last minute. Just something to consider while making your decision.

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

Pick a venue because you love it.
I chose to get married on the East End, most of my guests are from Nassau or out of town. I was a little nervous about my choice in the beginning, but many of my guests keep saying 'can't wait for your wedding!' and many have already booked rooms!!!
Bottom line- if they really want to come, they will.

Agreed! Me and my family and most of my friends and FH's friends live in either nassau, NYC, NJ or westchester... I am getting married in Oakdale!
Over 80% of the people invited are coming and staying at the hotel....Have it where you want to have it.

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

Particularly if you have a night reception some people might feel they have to leave early due to the drive/babysitter. I, too, had similar issues. Keep in mind... in January if it is snowing that day it could take them twice as long to get there.

My cousin got married in Western Nassau in Feb of 1994... the winter of one storm after another... I lived in Nassau and it literally took me almost three hours to get there because of weather. Many guest didn't show.

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

Yes Giorgios was one of our choices--so we chose East Wind instead which is only ten minutes from Giorgios but East Wind has rooms availalble at their facility--so it made our decision easier along w/ other things....We also live in Nassau so the decision was taken into consideration but my advice is have it where you love--b/c people will complain if you had it an hour away or if you had it fifteen minutes away---TRUST ME!!!

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

Just an FYI. I am getting married in Westbury and about 50% of my guests are still staying over in a hotel - just to keep the party going ... so if you have family/friends like that too then it may not even matter where you have it!

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

My reception is far...Oakdale. I live in Manhattan. Since it was so far out, I got a church near my reception to make it a little easier for guests. Although my Dad is still complaining that Oakdale is too far for his friends from Jersey!! Oh well, if it's too far they don't have to come!!

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

I think it depends on how many people you're inviting. I had my heart set on Atlantica but I knew a lot of people would not make the drive out there & that would leave me searching to make my min.

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

I say, go for it! You're only doing this once, right?

My only concern is that you may have a few more declines than you anticipate. Some people will decline because they won't want to drive. But, those who really want to be there on your special day will make arrangements to be there!

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

My family lives primarily in Nassau and Queens and FH's family in NJ...so we only looked in Nassau so that it would be convenient for everyone. I happened to luck out that my top choice was located in western Nassau.

Re: Would you not pick a reception location because it is too far????

I would be a little concerned because of the month. It's January - if it is bad weather, or even snowing a little - you may lose more people because of the distance. Just a thought...
