Re: M.S. Teachers...I need an idea for a bulletin board

I don't teach math but I work in a middle school. In the past my kids have done projects where they have to create floor plans for their dream homes and have to figure out the area and perimeter, etc. I know it was something that the teacher was able to do with the kids and get it on the BB quickly.

You could also have the kids interview each other and collect info like favorite food, tv show, song, etc. and then create bar graphs and pie charts to show how the data is broken down. I think you could also get that done fairly quickly. Or you could connect the Presidential election and issues related to it to math by using that info for charts and graphs. Hope this helps!

Re: M.S. Teachers...I need an idea for a bulletin board

The math teacher in my school did a stained glass project with the eighth grade to tie in geometry. They had to use a specific number of geometric shapes to come up with a design, then they used stained glass paints and liquid lead and transferred their designs to glass. She did a whole display in the lobby of the school and people were amazed. She had explanations of the different geometric shapes written out by the students. It was like an educational art exhibit.

Thanks for the ideas. I can use them once school begins. I need to do something for before the students arrive. Any other suggestions.

Well, what grade do you teach? All of junior high or just one grade?

Re: M.S. Teachers...I need an idea for a bulletin board

7th grade, I share a room with a teacher teaching s.s. One of the small bulletin boards I have I put up a 5 foot display of math symbols with their meanings. I was trying to do something creative on the other. I just can't think right now. In NYC I was so trained in Balanced Literacy, that's all I keep thinking about.

Re: M.S. Teachers...I need an idea for a bulletin board

I teach 1st grade so this is a shot in the dark....since it's just to have something up until your students can produce something maybe you can have the various 'math signs and vocabulary' and equations scattered over the board. I'm trying to think of a catchy title, but I am blank!
Welcome to the wonderful world of math??

Re: M.S. Teachers...I need an idea for a bulletin board

Why don't you do a display of things that you need math for like music and baseball and other sports and shopping and what not, then have a catchy phrase about Math is Everywhere?

Re: M.S. Teachers...I need an idea for a bulletin board

Thanks for the ideas. I was thinking about making a wb with math being in the middle and connecting it to toher subject areas. An maybe writing Making Connections. But I like the idea Math is Everywhere.

Re: M.S. Teachers...I need an idea for a bulletin board

You could probably tie it into what you wanted to do. Kids are more likely to get into it if they can relate to it. And I know that they really do read the bulletin boards. My kids always comment on my bulletin boards, so I know it's a useful tool.

Re: M.S. Teachers...I need an idea for a bulletin board

Thanks again for all the ideas. I think as part of review, on the first day we'll review all the ways we use math on a daily basis and I'll add them. I can label it as either Everday Math or When Do You Use Math?
