What's the difference between Maid of Honor v. Matron of Honor?

I would like to have my sister as one and my best friend as the other. I'm just curious what each title means so I can give each the appropriate title.

Not sure if I'm right on this, but is the Matron of Honor mean that the woman is already married? Neither my sister or best friend are married, nor do they have any kids.
Thanks...and sry for the dumb question.

Little political vent coming. Why are we changed with marriage -- note how there is no
Best Man=smart man who understood the wisdom of commiting to marriage vs. say

I will now step off my soapbox. Thank you.

I'm going to be annoying here but the plural is matrons of honor (not matron of honors). Sorry, that's just me being extremely annoying.
