Do you leave the cake out during the whole reception or bring it out when it's ready??

Do you leave the cake out during the whole reception or bring it out when it's ready??

Today I went to the SandCastle and asked them about changing my cake for the e-party I'm having in May. So I mentioned to them that I may want an noccola (hazelnut) ice-cream cake, well she told me that I wouldn't be able to have one because the cake would be left out, unless I option to only bring the cake out when it's time for me and my FI are ready to cut it. Then she further told me that usually the weddings she has seen have had the cake out throughout the night until it was finally ready to be cut. I have never been to a wedding that has had the cake out during the whole reception...and trust me I've been to many.

IMO, (no offense to anyone) I think it looks tacky because that is something part of the Vienessian Hour (looks to disorganized to have present during main course, etc) and it ruins the surprise for guests. Personally, if I were a guest I would love to be surprised and rather see the cake when the time is right. So my question is... Do you leave the cake out during the whole reception or bring it out when it's ready?? Why would you pick one over the other? I would love to hear your opinions, especially those that don't share my same view...maybe I'm not seeing something.
Thanks.

At the last few weddings I have been to, the cake table has been set up with the cake throughout the whole wedding.

Is this something new? What do you like better and why? What if it accidently falls?

Re: Do you leave the cake out during the whole reception or bring it out when it's ready??

For our e-party, they brought out our cake right before it was served.

For my wedding, as well as EVERY wedding I've been to, the cake has been out for the duration of the reception (until it's eaten)

Our cocktail hour was in a separate room, so they didnt' set up our cake until 6:15. Our reception started at 6:30 and I think we cut the cake around 9:30ish...then we did the bouquet, followed by parent dances, then the venetian tables, and then more dancing...

Same as Suven here.

For my E-party at Chateau La Mer, the cake was brought out just before cutting. It was two layer simple rectangular cake. For my wedding at the SandCastle, and EVERY other wedding I've been to, the cake is out from the beginning. It's one of the main 'attractions', if you will, at the reception, so, yeah, it's usually out, in my experience.

I think parties other than weddings (showers, e-partys, etc) the cake is brought out after dinner/lunch. Same time as coffee and other desserts.

Re: Do you leave the cake out during the whole reception or bring it out when it's ready??

Thanks everyone. I'm going to tell the SandCastle to just bring the cake for my e-party out when it is time to cut it. I'm going to ask my mother about leaving the cake out...maybe I just couldn't see it at these weddings I've been to. (My vision's really, really bad). I'm curious though...I'll find out what my mother says tommorow. Thanks again everyone for helping.

I have always seen cakes out during weddings also. Ours was in a far corner so there was no danger of someone bumping into it.

Re: Do you leave the cake out during the whole reception or bring it out when it's ready??

My cake was out for the entire reception, in a safe area away from all the activity.

If your cake has whipped cream frosting, it cannot be left out and they have to bring it out right before you cut it. Whipped cream has to be refrigerated.

Re: Do you leave the cake out during the whole reception or bring it out when it's ready??

Yes usually its left out... if they bring it out right before its cut everyone is seated and NO ONE get to see it but you and the photographer. Usually they have it displayed in front of the sweet heart table so when everyone is walking into the room they can look at it.

Re: Do you leave the cake out during the whole reception or bring it out when it's ready??

I had mine displayed the whole time. It may sound cheesy, but I feel like the cake is kind of like an accessory/or one of the little things that makes your wedding. I liked showing mine off the whole time..

Mine too! I loved looking at it the whole time!!
eta: plus with all the work that it takes to make it look gorgeous it would be a shame to only bring it out before the cake cutting. IMO

Re: Do you leave the cake out during the whole reception or bring it out when it's ready??

Ours was on our sweetheart table the whole time. I was a little surprised when I first saw it there b/c I had always envisioned it being brought out later in the reception, but it was fine. We had fun looking at it.

Re: Do you leave the cake out during the whole reception or bring it out when it's ready??

From what I understand is that at alot of places the baker will make the cakes in advance and freeze them - take them out and decorate them - so the reason they are out for the whole party is so they defrost to room temp. Being that the baker makes the cakes according to the weddings that week/month.

My cake was wheeled out - but who knows when they made it - mine tasted delish & fresh...everyone loved it so much - but who knows they swore to me it's made the night b/f -
