There are some nice houses in Bay Shore on the water, but it is not the best town...I wouldn't live there...The mall there is very sketchy and there were gang attacks there...

Just like any other town, there are nice areas and not so nice areas. You'd really have to check out each house and find out exactly where it is located.

Re: Is Bay Shore in Suffolk a good area?
Okay, here we go again .. just like I mentioned in the 'Jay Leno - Levittown' thread.'Gang Attacks' .. sheesh .. like Bay Shore is the middle of some dive where you need to where a bullet proof vest if you even dare to go through the neighborhood.
I grew up going to South Shore Mall .. even worked there .. and never once did I hear of anything that had me fearing for my life .. or even fearing about going there. Seriously .. basically any stories we heard were about Sunrise Mall or what was considered worse .. the Green Acres Mall .. however, I never had any experiences to believe any of those claims .. and I also worked at Sunrise Mall for a considerable time.
As for Bay Shore itself .. you need to know that Bay Shore is a very big area. Most of which goes to the Bay Shore schools, but there is a small area of Bay Shore that goes to Brentwood schools .. OH NO .. BRENTWOOD, you say .. yes, Brentwood .. and don't believe the horror stories you hear about this place either.
In general, both Bay Shore and Brentwood are families with a lower average income (that doesn't mean dirt poor .. just families that are hard working, making less than other more fortunate familes).
While some may turn up their noses to these towns, they really do have nice neighborhoods .. and just like any town .. you would need to investigate to see if the specific area you're looking at is suitable to you.
Of course, if you're interested in the schools .. I would recommend calling the school districts to take a tour .. I don't really believe in the 'statistics' that are put out on some websites.
I know of people who went to schools considered 'shady' .. and these are some of the smartest people I know.
But please .. 'Gang Attacks' .. that's just a wee bit too harsh!

Re: Is Bay Shore in Suffolk a good area?
I wouldnt call it too harsh. I served Jury Duty for a month and heard many stories about towns that people consider shady. There may not be constant gang attacks but there are reasons why certain towns have bad reputations. I also learned that towns that people think are great have their shady attributes.

Re: Is Bay Shore in Suffolk a good area?
There was actually a gang attack at the mall where a girl in a gang was forced to slash a random person's face of someone who was wearing a red shirt. A random shopper had her faced slashed....The question was is it a good area--in general I would say no, though it may have some nicer pockets within the area...

The gang attack that slashed the girl in the face is the ABSOLUTE TRUTH! Do some reasearch then if you don't believe it. I worked in Bayshore Mall for many years and I no longer feel safe going there by myself. I avoid it at all costs! But that is me. Would I say it is as bad as Green Acres- nope but it is getting up there, that is for sure.

Re: Is Bay Shore in Suffolk a good area?
Okay, here's the link to a story I found on the 'gang attacks' .. it was one isolated incident that happened back in October 2000. This could have happened anywhere, and I stand by what I said about Bay Shore and Brentwood .. I know the towns very well .. and I know there are certainly good parts worthy of homeownership consideration. To set the record straight on exactly what happened - here is the story:
Gang Attacks
As for towns getting bad reps for good reason .. I would not agree completely with that statement .. some towns get a bad rep simply because there is strong racial diversity .. some towns get bad reps simply because the residents are lower income families who have to work harder to get by comfortably .. and I know some towns get a bad rep from media presentation .. as in media presents their stories in biased ways.

Re: Is Bay Shore in Suffolk a good area?
Like the old saying says:' nothing is cheap for a no reason'
Obviously if it were a great town with a great school district the prices of the houses would be more expensive no matter what the condition of the house.
eta: My dad grew up in bayshore, different time period obviously but he loved living there becuase its convienient and close to the water

I completely agree. I won't go there anymore either but growing up I did and it was perfectly safe. Things do change. Just b/c somewhere was nice a few years ago doesn't mean it still is. Like someone said it's cheap for a reason. You can always drive through the town and see what you think for yourself. It's really nice by the water, though!

Re: Is Bay Shore in Suffolk a good area?
The gang attack at Bay Shore mall IS true. I was a teacher and a detective that specializes in gangs of LI did a presentation on all of the gang attacks, and this was one of them. This is not to say that this is a normal occurence there, but saying it didn't happen is a little ridiculous. I am a normal shopper there and never felt unsafe, but I can assure you there are people in gangs that live in those areas, as well as many affluent areas on LI.

I've also worked for Brentwood schools and they have AMAZING teachers, but you cannot deny the violence that happens there.

Re: Is Bay Shore in Suffolk a good area?
I posted the link to the attack story, so I am not denying that the one instance did not happen, I thought I made that perfectly clear already. And I was not trying to pass off Bay Shore (or Brentwood) as super-great towns with stellar schools, amazing mansion houses .. but rather said that the neighborhoods were of hard-working families that weren't as fortunate as others .. so .. I think that obviously translates into NOT being super-super expensive .. because they are not super-great towns with stellar schools, amazing mansion houses .. those kinds of towns will obviously have houses that are much more expensive .. it's a simple case of supply-and-demand .. these towns are not towns of first-choice .. that doesn't make them bad towns to live in .. and for the record .. Brentwood schools have had a bad reputation for a long, long, long time .. I'm talking like going back to the 80s-90s-present .. maybe even before that .. so it's not that the town has gone downhill .. the town has always gotten bad press .. and in my opinion, it's been unfair.
hugs213 - I'll say it again .. I really think you need to check out the area of any specific house(s) you might be interested in .. and take a tour of the schools. The fact is .. anything can happen anywhere .. and too many communities get bum-raps on this board. FM me if you'd like to discuss Bay Shore further .. I'm done on this thread.

Violence happens in a lot more places than any of us hears about. And it's amazing how when violence happens in certain areas and it does get publicized .. most people don't even think twice about it .. just because of a so-called 'reputation.' Central Park is a perfect example.

Re: Is Bay Shore in Suffolk a good area?
...sorry I just saw this post....I live in bayshore now...I have lived there my entire life...went to Brentwood High school, my sister is now a teacher at Brentwood highschool... I have 2 children(6 and 5 years old) and I feel completely safe raising my children where we are now...everyone has different opinions on the towns of LI...the best bet is to call the schools and take a look for yourself..

Re: Is Bay Shore in Suffolk a good area?
I had friends who grew up and eventually moved out of Bayshore. Why? Because 2/3 of the houses on their blocks had installed pretty bars over the windows and doors. I doubt they were put there to enhance the beauty of the exterior of the houses
Each to his own but I would not be comfortable with raising my family in either one of those communities. Take a look on one of the sex offender registries - see how many of the offenders live in these communities. Too close for comfort (although I should talk, Patchogue has plenty as well - that's why I'm considering a move too
