Best Hospitals to Deliver

Are some hospitals better than others to deliver at? Does anyone have any suggestions or those to stay away from on Long Island?

I've been told North Shore Manhasset and Winthrop are the 2 best in Nassau.

Re: Best Hospitals to Deliver

My family has delivered a few babys at Winthrop. I have heard they are a great hospital to deliver at. And from being there, in the waiting area, the staff was always really nice.

Re: Best Hospitals to Deliver

I have heard Winthrop and North Shore Manhasset.
Check out:

www.healthgrades.com.

They have ratings for hospitals bases on obstetrics.

Re: Best Hospitals to Deliver

Thanks! I've heard the same 2 over and over again.

One more question: What about hospitals in Suffolk? Or is it worth the time to drive out to Manhasset or Mineola?

Re: Best Hospitals to Deliver

The top hospitals that were given 5 stars by healthgrades.com for obstetrics were:
Good Samaritan in West Islip
Southside Hospital in Bayshore
St Charles in Port Jefferson
Huntington Hospital in Huntington. Hope this helps.

Re: Best Hospitals to Deliver

My SIL delivered at St Catherines in Smithtown and Stony Brook.

St Catherines was great. THe nurses were really nice and they take a lot of precautions against baby kidnapping. The only thing my SIL didnt liek (at the time) was that they dont allow the baby to be in the room during open visiting hours and I dont think they want the baby in the room over night. At the time she thought this was insane. Then she delivered at SB b/c my nephew had the cord wrapped around his neck and he wasnt in position so they turned him in the womb. and she wound up having a c/s. THey were much more lax on the rules, the baby was allowed in her room 24 hours if htats what she wanted (after having 1 she realized that it was beneificial to get her last few nights of uninturreped sleep)

At both though she felt she got great care.

Re: Best Hospitals to Deliver

You want to also look for a hospital w/great neonatal care. If god forbid something were to happen you would want a hospital w/the most extensive medical care for both you and your baby. Winthrop has a great ante partum Labor & Delivery, post partum and an excellent NICU. But then again I'm bias since I work there!

I had a very high risk pregnancy that ended in a stillborn through Stony Brook..I hate to be negative, everyones experience is different but I did not like them and would not go back. The issue with them is that AFTER you deliver they have a great NICU ( if god forbid) but when there is your DR cannot get there or you use a Stony Brook Dr they are students and while maybe learning from the best, they are not. I had a lawsuit started against them, but the lawyers said no one wins against a hospital that size..

long story short, be sure to get a good dr if you choose or have to use SB...again though, just my experience and this was 7 years ago.

I had my son at Stony Brook, was pretty happy with them, nurses were just :OK:. I will be having this baby at St. Charles, which from what I've heard, is wonderful

I just delivered at St.Charles-I have to say the nurses in Labor and Delivery were angels but some on the maternity floor were real winners if you catch my drift (and i'm a nurse at Mather down the road)-I waited almost 2 hours for a motrin one morning!

Re: Best Hospitals to Deliver

I'm devastated over the news I've just learned of Stony Brook. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Both of my sisters had high-risk pregnancies and gave birth to premies and survived bc of the doctors at SB. I planned to give birth to my baby there (given my family genetics) but now I'm having second thoughts. So sorry to hear about the news.

Oh great! That's what I found with the nurses at Stony Brook...when you need those pain pills, you dont want to have to wait an hour during a "shift change".
The other thing I really didnt like about Stony Brook were the visiting hours. I had a c-section, and I had visitors at all times of day, sometimes 10 people in my room. It was too much.

Please dont have second thoughtsdue to me. I know someone who had a pre term 28 week old there and had great things to say. I do not want to disuade anyone, I simply want EVERYONE to be informed so things like my ordeal do not happen again to anyone. I even brought cookies for the nurses I loved after I got home and better...

I was in the hospital for 10 weeks and yes some of the nurses were evil..but you will find that everywhere.

I hate to put my personal stuff out there, but I truly believe they looked at me less seriously there. I was 21 and turned 22 in patient. I looked younger then I was, I was unmarried and due to the extended hospital stay I had to get help from Medicare at the time. Everytime I mentioned a concern it was brushed away. I had an infection that caused the pre-term birth and I KNEW that, but they didnt want to listen. I understand I was 21 but they looked down at me in my opinion. My chart even ( after paying $750 to get the medical records) called me " an obsessive worrier over having an infection" ..." and says "has unrealistic concerns with health." If only they had listened.

Now I say all that because I do think it made a difference in my care .

When I was in L & D after my daughter had just died the person who came with the wheelchair to take me to my room brought food, when I went to eat the food she had brought , she said "why dont you give that to your Mother, she looks like shes been through Hell...ummm hello? Who just went through hell here?? And then when I was in the chair said " it was for the best, you are so young still, enjoy your life first ." To which I tried to punch her and of course I ended up looking like the lunatic.

While in my room, an IV ( the port had not been changed in 5 days) fell out around 3:00 AM, I kept bugging the nurse because the IV was pouring out and she came in and said " I just told your Dr. you pulled your IV out, if you dont want to be here, just go home.( ????)

We also had to file court papers because they were discharging me after 10 weeks in patient because I was not making "good" progress and they felt there was nothing more to be done for me ( they actually gave me a sterilized scissor and a clamp in an a bag to take home in case I delivered at home early!!) We got the patient lawyer to get me to stay two more days. I went into labor 3 hours after leaving the hospital .

This is not a story to make anyone feel bad for me, what happened to me has never happened to anyone that I have heard of, BUT..I will tell my story about the hospital because I do want anyone going there to make sure they SPEAK up because I truly do not believe I was given adequate care there.

I went back 8 weeks later for my post delivery check-up...at the OBGYN's office( inside Stony Brook) ..4 people asked me what I had and how my baby was doing...no-one bothered to even look at my chart.

About 6 months later I received a bill in the mail for $69,000 for my stay. It had already been paid in full...the woman harassed me for weeks until I could "prove " it was paid..when I called her to make sure she had gotten the info, she said ( no apology..and she had reduced me to tears at times during our calls) " Yes, I got your fax, I have no idea how you managed to get someone to pay for this."?????????

Im sorry this is so long...I really am NOT setting out to scare anyone, just inform people...

I think everyone has different experiences and I do not think anyone should be afraid of the hospital just make sure you take an active role in your care and your delivery..

Re: Best Hospitals to Deliver

I had my both my boys at LIJ and had my dnc at LIJ. I had good experiences. I didnt really like the way I was left alone really alone. I had nobody with me at the time of my second one. No visitors or anything. My folks were out of town they asked me if they could leave I told them yes your daughter is just having a baby no big deal. My in-laws had my older guy cause he was sick so nobody really was there for me the second time around. Even hubby didnt come to visit. He went to work and would call me when he got home. Im sorry I am wallowing. But I knew several nurses there through family and they knew I was going to be alone. But nobody helped. I was in the hospitalsecond time 4 days and the first time around a little over a week, due to infection

Re: Best Hospitals to Deliver

dm24angel, that story is horrific and i'm so upset that you had to go through that. i would continue to pursue a lawsuit with them. It's disgraceful. It most certainly IS disuading me from delivering there when the time comes. Again, I'm so sorry you had to go through this. I'm sickened over it.

Re: Best Hospitals to Deliver

Actually, come to think of it, the nurses and doctors at SB sent my sister home in rush hour traffic saying her contractions were braxton hix and she wound up almost giving birth in traffic. so yeah, i guess SB is not that good.

That was me coming BACK to the hospital the day I left..it was rush hour and I was early so labor was short....I just made it into the delivery room.

Thanks for your kind words.
Again, I HATE to say that this is routine for them( hospital) I dont think it is, but the more aware people are the better.

I could not at this point continue to pursue a lawsuit because it was 7 years ago last June and there is a statute( sp? ) of limitations.

Yeah-it was frustrating at times. But the visiting hours were actually strict and I liked that-I needed the rest.
