new jersey girls....

We are getting so frustrated with house hunting in LI! We want to start looking in NJ but we don't know what areas are 'good'. I want to be near the border because I work in westchester and I drive in.

Any suggestions?

Re: new jersey girls....

New Jersey always reminds me of prostitution rings and pollution! My MIL just bought a house in the redbank area for $69,000 about, but I think I saw a wolf running in her backyard last week.

ok that is ridiculous - see its comments like that that make NYers and LIers never want to come to NJ!

I live in Dunellen, its in Middlesex Cty, central NJ. We have a 4 BR house, full basement, attic, living room, tv room , dining room, big kitchen, garage, nice sized yard, and we paid under 300k. I commute to the city and it takes me about 1 to 1.5 hrs. We have fresh air (no pollution!), nice neighbors, and the traffic and prices are not anything like LI.

You may want to check out Bergen County since it is near the border of NY state. Although it can be pricy depending on the area. There are also some areas in Sussex Cty which are a little more rural but really nice and affordable. Another one is Morris county, a few nice towns are Rockaway, Dover , Netcong, Boonton. If you go to realtor.com and click on Map Search, check out those 3 counties.

Re: new jersey girls....

thanks so much MrsTc! I really love your house! I checked out dunellen but it's about 1hr 45min from my job - a tad too far but I'll keep looking!

Re: new jersey girls....

we are on the hunt as well...

currently DH and i live in hoboken and we are trying to figure out if we should rent for a couple more years and buy a house, or try to find a condo next year and try to stay put for 4 or 5 years then upgrade...

i work in jersey and DH works in manhattan. we think we are tied to the jersey side for now because of my job. where we look depends on whether we decided to buy or rent - we see an accountant next we to crunch the numbers...

what about rockland county in NY for you? what about westchester (i know westchester very well as i grew up there)?

Re: new jersey girls....

If you work in Westchester you might want to check out areas by the GW Bridge ( Bergen & Hudson). I used to work in Westchester ( Rye, NY) and live in Essex County and the commute was horrible. Where I live in Essex County is under 15 miles from the GW Bridge.

I know everyone says but it's a reverse commute. I would spend about 2 1/2- 3 hours a day in the car and for some reason Friday's were hell. Sorry I just want to be honest with you.

Anyway, after 6 months of that commute I now work in NJ.

Re: new jersey girls....

I am in NJ also....Bergen County. Although...the prices are not much better than LI. We just bought a 50 year old 3BR cape cod...for $375K. It was pretty much in move-in condition, but we are going to do some renovation and dormer the top of the cape for some more living space....but I really like the neighborhood....we are in Elmwood Park. Good luck!

Re: new jersey girls....

we love it in NJ. would never move back to LI now. we're out in morristown (morris county) which is too far to commute to westchester. its so beautiful out here. lots of land and trees. its so different from where i grew up in nassau county. check out bergen county & possibly hudson. pricey because they are closer to the city. not much cheaper than LI unfortunately.

I just moved to NJ as well. We live in Baskingridge. I commute to the city everyday by NJ Transit.

SPEL - I was just in Morristown last night for happy hour. I loved it!!! It's the best town ever and soooo cute! I wish we lived there. Baskingridge is probably 20 minutes from Morristown.
