I only had 3 dishes, so I never had used the dishwasher, one day I got an urge to clean everything in my apartment, so I loaded up dishwasher and put dish liquid in, I did not know there was a difference between palmolive and dish washer powder, I came home to a kitchen full of suds!!

Re: QOTD: share some funny 'on ur own for the first time' mishaps

I was living with a friend on the upper east side and for some reason, my key wouldn't turn in the lock. I tried knocking on the door, but no answer. I couldn't imagine where my roommate would be, it was close to midnight on a weekday, and she was usually home by then. I went downstairs to call her from the payphone, still no answer. Went back upstairs to try the key again...well, at this point, the couple next door came home and they were very drunk, when they went into their apartment, they proceded to have sex, extremely loudly!!! It sounded like they were right up against the door!!!!! It was terrible! Ever try to turn your key in the lock and hold your ears at the same time?

I eventually went to my cousin's apartment a few blocks away and she called my roommate and yelled into the answering machine. She eventually answered the phone - she had been sleeping throughout the entire ordeal!!!!

I used Tilex on my shower curtain and didn't realize that Tilex had bleach in it and ruined a nice pair of jeans!

Re: QOTD: share some funny 'on ur own for the first time' mishaps

not officially living in my own place yet...but a while back i was making fresh vegetable soup...i peeled, i cut, i washed, i boiled...for HOURS...then i wanted to spice it up a little bit...well, i accidentally put too much pepper in it...(um, the cover broke off and the whole jar went in to my soup)

it was TERRIBLE...

if you put too much salt into food you can use a potato to absorb some of it, but there is no remedy (as far as i know) for too much pepper...

I put bubble bath in my friend's jacuzzi while I was house sitting once. The bathroom floor was REALLY clean after that!

Re: QOTD: share some funny 'on ur own for the first time' mishaps

Last february my husband and I bought our house - previous to that we both lived in apartments (hence the super took care of everything).

So one night its getting colder and colder - it was a sat night and we were getting ready to go out - brrr...it was freezing...finally we realized the heat wasn't working. (we have a gas tank)

So we can't figure out what is wrong - we call a plumber at 10pm on a sat night - he came in and was sooo mad - he said - DIDN'T ANYONE TELL YOU TO FILL THE TANK WITH WATER??? I guess you have to have a certain amount of water in the unit - once that water burns off the unit wont turn on so it needs to be checked every two weeks or so (or you can have an automatic valve put on)

WHO KNEW? We felt like idiots! The plumber was pissed....and it was the most expensive way to fill up the tank - believe me!

DOH!

Re: QOTD: share some funny 'on ur own for the first time' mishaps

well, i guess my most famous one is when my DH and I moved into our house (does that count?) the washing machine hose came out of the slop sink and flooded my entire basement with about 3 inches of bubbly water. On the bright side, my DH reconsidered murdering me because he realized that if he added bleach to the water, we could clean the basement floor (its cement and was previously home to many many cats ) lol

Re: QOTD: share some funny 'on ur own for the first time' mishaps

-When I used to cook pasta in my apartment in Michigan...I would see if it was done by throwing a piece of pasta at the ceiling. If it fell, it wasn't ready, if it stuck...it was done.

By the time I moved out of that apartment, it looked like I had a spaghetti chandelier!

-I've rebuilt a Ford V8 in the bedroom of my old apartment.

-I lived with my brother at one point in a two bedroom apartment on the second floor. He had a really hard time waking up in the morning. His alarm would go off for a half hour and he would not wake up. The thing was, his alarm clock was REALLY loud. We were friends with the girl who lived below us and her bedroom was right below my brother's. She would bang on the ceiling every morning and yell, 'WAKE UP BILL!!!!'

-I lived on a second floor apartment with a balcony (more of a first floor and a half...the 1st floor was a garden apartment that was half underground and half above ground). I used to do the ole 'Dukes of Hazzard' and use the balcony as my exit all the time. Running jump and one hand it over the railing. Never broke anything (knock on wood for the future since we now live on the fourth floor!)

-My cat gave birth under my bed once. That was messy

....I've got a million stories...I oughta write a book!

Re: QOTD: share some funny 'on ur own for the first time' mishaps

I have one that I did last year........when you read the story, you will know and understand that I do not cook, no common sense w/ it whatsoever, but Im really not a Moron...but.......

I made low fat pumpkin muffins last year and it called for egg whites, so I boiled the eggs and used the whites as the egg whites, couldnt understand why the recipe would ask for this, b/c now there were chunks of egg whites in my muffins, so needless to say, I went upstairs to ask mommy---and, well, laughed for a real long time at my expense then explained to me what I should have done--I guess when I read egg whites, the only thing that came to mind was cooked instead of raw!

Dont ask????

Re: QOTD: share some funny 'on ur own for the first time' mishaps

These are too funny

Here is one of my many:

My younger brother moved in with DH and I around Christmastime. DH always had a real tree growing up and we didn't. So my brother and I decide to go out and buy one and decorate it to surprise DH.

We picked a good one, took out all the decorations, took off the net, set it up in the stand and proceeded to decorate. After we were all finished we took a step back to take a long stare at it, and it fell over right in front of us.

We picked it up and it kept falling. DH walked in while we were trying to stand it up and started dying laughing, but pissed all at the same time.

Told us we should let it sit overnight before we decorate otherwise once the branches settle all the decorations will fall off and sure enough the next day they were on the floor.
