Home Inspection / Did they climb up on the roof?

DH and I have discovered our roof needs repair. Our insepctor told us it was customary not to climb up on the roof.

Did anyone's inspector go up on the roof? I just spoke to a friend and was told hers did.

Thanks.

Karen

Re: Home Inspection / Did they climb up on the roof?

I'd like to add I am in Nassau County, I don't know if the inspectors can climb in Suffolk but not Nassau.

I am mad now.

Re: Home Inspection / Did they climb up on the roof?

My inspector did not climb on the roof. We didn't ask him to though, because we were told the roof was only 5 years old, and he did look at it from ground level and stated that it looked new.

Re: Home Inspection / Did they climb up on the roof?

We bought in Jersey. We knew just by the age of the roof that it would eventually need repairs - so the inspector did not go up specifically to check it out - he did, however, go up to look at the soffits (sp?) and chimney.

We're in Nassau, and our inspector pretty much did everything but hang from the ceiling. He was on the roof, in the attic, in the garage, flushing toilets, running sinks.... He was nuts, but he definitely did a thorough inspection and defintely was on the roof.

Re: Home Inspection / Did they climb up on the roof?

Well, our inspector claims by law he doens't have to go up on the roof. Thank you for all your responses.

Long story short, we are taking him to small claims court!

The engineer we hired not only climbed on our roof...he jumped up and down in many different spots, we saw him do this with our own eyes!. We thought he was great.

Re: Home Inspection / Did they climb up on the roof?

No, I don't think ours went on the roof. But he did check the soffets and attic too. But, I was a little concerned with the stuff he couldn't get to. But, so far, so good for us.
Good luck

Re: Home Inspection / Did they climb up on the roof?

We did not ask him to, but our enigineer went up on the roof and my DH followed. Even though the roofs age was obvious from the ground. He found other things we needed to take care of, ie crumbling, useless chimneys that needed to come down etc...

Re: Home Inspection / Did they climb up on the roof?

Our inspector did NOT go up on the roof. But if your roof really needs to be replaced, that should have been evident in the attic (if leaking) or even just from looking at it...

Is it leaking? or just old?

We must of had the same guy. He was everywhere. It was great. Felt like we got our money's worth.
