LI Teachers - I need advice
Hi Girls,I am currently a NYC teacher - and hope and pray to get a job in Nassau for next year.
Besides knowing someone - does anyone have any advice for increasing my opportunities at a job? Also, I figured I would research the curricula in some of the different disctricts on LI. Does anyone have any info on that? I checked some of the schools websites but I couldn't find info on particular curricula - just standards. For example, NYC (for the most part) is using a balanced literacy program - (I believe most are using the Teacher College Reading and Writing project) and Everyday Math. Before I even went on an interview (assuming I am lucky enough to get one) I would want to know if their curricula was similiar or different to what I am using now.
Also - I assumed I would start looking in early spring - like March.
Anything other info might help too!!

Re: LI Teachers - I need advice
I would start checking the Sunday NYTimes (week in review I believe they are in) now... schools start posting for positions right after the holidays... (my districts cut off for accepting applications is usually mid-Feb) Also go to the individual school's web sites, a lot of applications are now done online. For Nassau, I believe boces has a seperate online system which allows you to apply to a whole bunch of Nassau County Schools at once. When I went on all my interviews last year the districts didnt really ask me about their individual curriculums and if I was familiar with it or not... I dont think they would expect you to know that. I do know that in my district they did ask the elem applicants if they were familiar with literacy collabrative...
hope this helps!!

Check school web pages directly...often jobs are posted there before they are posted in the Times...Also, Nassau Boces has a job listing page...

Re: LI Teachers - I need advice
I'd start checking listings in January and then on. You may need to consider whether or not you could do a leave replacement or TA position with hopes of it turning into a tenure track. Often this is how teachers in some areas get positions. You never know though! Good luck!
