Offered a new job & 7 weeks PG???
I just got a call today for an interview for a new job...I really need it because it's on LI and right now I'm in the city commuting 2 hrs each way! I was freaking out about what I'd do when the baby came because there is no way I can do that commute and take care of a child...so what should I do? Can I go on the interview?? Should I say anything? Do I have to? What would you do??? It would be ideal for me because the $$ is the same as I'm making now in the city, but I wouldn't have to pay $300 LIRR/MTA anymore- it would be a huge financial relief for us and I would have more time for baby/family.HELP!!!
ETA: I currently have ZERO benefits at my job...my health insurance is through DH. I also have ZERO maternity and was relying on state funded short tem disability...so not being eligible for Maternity leave at the new job isn't too much of a concern right now. It would have been if I was TTC...

Re: Offered a new job & 7 weeks PG???
I say go for it...however IMO i would be upfront with them about being pregnant. I would be dissapointed as an employer to not know and find out afterwards like you were trying to get one over on me. Actually , we just hired our first employee for this upcoming march and she is prego and will be due in July and we had no issues with it. She has plans of returning back to work FT so thats all i was concerened with. If they are smart they would not think you plan to interview and work for 6 months and not come back...thats the way we looked at it.But its fair to let them know IMO.
Good Luck

Re: Offered a new job & 7 weeks PG???
7 weeks isnt that long. go on the interview but dont tell them your pregnant becuase even though they are not going to discriminate put yourselves in their shoes they will probably pick someone else. If you get the job tell them at the 3 month mark which is norm i figure for preggo women to tell work or based on your comfort level. it could make or break the offer. I commute to queens everyday so i feel your pain.you never know who this new place would be maybe they are flex with hours, let you work from home pt or most of the time. i would inquire about benefits but not too much on child care might throw up a red flag.

Re: Offered a new job & 7 weeks PG???
I would absolutely go on the interview and be open to accepting the job is offered. Things to think about though...you probably will not be eligible for any company sponsored disabillity at a new job since many companies require you to be there for a year or so and you may want to find out about what kind of maternity leave you would be eligible for without coming out and telling them you are pregnant. Some may feel you are being deceptive not letting a new employer know about your pregnancy, but I disagree. You are only 7 weeks along and have many months to go. It is not like you are looking to switch jobs at 7 months preggo.

Re: Offered a new job & 7 weeks PG???
Definitely go for it! I was 18 weeks PG when I got a new job. I did not tell them until a couple of weeks later, and luckily they were happy for me. I hid it really well.I wouldn't tell them you were PG though right away. Wait until you're a few months along. Get a relationship with the new company first.
I would do it just for the commute. Trust me, you'll need the time with the baby. I still can't find enough hours in the day.
Good luck!

I would definitely go on the interview, however, I wouldn't tell them that I was pregnant. Even though it is against the law to discriminate it still happens.Good Luck, I hope you get the job, it would be awesome for you to be able to work on LI.

Definetly go for it! You're still early in your pregnancy so I wouldn't worry about telling them your pg until you're further along. Keep us updated!

Re: Offered a new job & 7 weeks PG???
You are not obligated to tell them your PG. I would definitely think you should go to the interview and during the interview, in discussing their benefit package, ask questions about ALL aspects, including maternity leave. It would be wonderful for you to be closer to home while your PG! Good luck to you!

You are not obligated to tell them anything personal...in fact, if they ask about kids, pregnancy, etc...they would be breaking the law. Go to the interview and give it your best shot. Good Luck!!

definitely go on the interview. it's too good of an opportunity to pass up. worry about when to tell them and all that once you get the offer.

Go for it and DO NOT SAY a word about your pregnancy! You are not legally obligated to say a word about it but do know that you are not eligable for FMLA and they can tell you that you are only allowed 6-8weeks off for maternity leave.

For those of you who started a new job while you were pregnant did you get paid maternity leave? I thought you only get paid maternity leave once you've worked for 12 months?

Oh, I didn't see michele31's post about the Family Medical Leave Act. Do some companies make exceptions to this?

A large company will most likely NOT make an exception since they have formal regulations/policies but a smaller company might have more flexibility. I would not count on it though.

I work for a huge company and you get some maternity leave if you have been at the company for more than a month but less than a year.So you may get something. Even if it is only partial pay.
