Ideas for Cocktail Reception

I'm getting married in December and we're having a cocktail reception. Some family members aren't thrilled with our choice to have a cocktail reception and are concerned that people (esp. older people) won't understand. We are trying to come up with creative ideas to build on the cocktail reception theme (personalized coasters?). We're noting on the invites that it's a cocktail reception but we thought we might have to really drive home the cocktail reception concept. Any suggestions??

Re: Ideas for Cocktail Reception

Thanks! Originally, we thought we'd save money on the cocktail reception but that really isn't the case. We like the idea because it's a little less structured than the traditional sit-down dinner and gives us a little more variety in food choices. But we still have to deal with the 'traditionalists' who think we're being cheap and/or don't understand what we're doing.

Re: Ideas for Cocktail Reception

I'm doing one, but i learned early on not to tell the older relatives - they get all worked up (also avoid telling the more wealthy ones - anything that is not a sit down is somehow a tacky buffett to them)

They don't get it - they will just have to be pleasantly surprised when they get there,...

We are having a wine tasting during our whole event - maybe you can do something like that?

Re: Ideas for Cocktail Reception

Thanks for the suggestions! Bunnymonkey, are you putting 'cocktail reception' on the invites? It's too late for me not to mention it to our close relatives (I thought it was such a good idea, it didn't occur to me that they wouldn't approve
Thanks again!

Re: Ideas for Cocktail Reception

Please don't let that bother you. Honestly, I think its such a great idea because those are my favorite foods! I doubt you are spending any 'less' on the reception and you are making it unique. I really do think its great you are doing it!

Re: Ideas for Cocktail Reception

Thanks! I know you're right
I do have this fear that half the guests will be wondering when dinner is coming...
I found some swizzle sticks though so we may add those the mix
Thanks for the suggestions!
