Anyone familiar with mid-town Manhattan?

Early in the summer I found a store that sells lots of good brand name cosmetics at really good prices. They are just tossed in bins. They also sell perfumes, toiletries and other things. It's a pretty large store.
I don't remember the name, nor the exact location. If memory serves me correctly, it is between 36 and 42 street and somewhere between 3 and 6 Ave.
I would love to find this store again.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Re: Anyone familiar with mid-town Manhattan?

Ok I'm going to be a bit vague , but there is a place I used to go to a lot when I worked in the 40s ...I'm stuggling to remember the details , since its been awhile since I've been there now that I work on the west side in the 50s

The store I'm thinking of was/is called (don't quote me here) Cosmetics Boutique. It was pretty close to Lord & Taylors, since I would always make a stop there when I'd hit L&T..

I know it was on either 38th or 39th street, between Fifth Avenue and Madison.. It wasn't a huge store but the they had all the department cosmetics at a fraction of the cost (Estee Lauder, Clinique, etc) as well as the drugstore cosmetics VERY cheap. As you described, everything was thrown into bins and you had to dig through the stuff, but everything was new and sealed .

They also sold a ton of fragrances at decent prices also

Hope that helped! (and didn't confuse you more!)

Re: Anyone familiar with mid-town Manhattan?

Felicia, I'm pretty sure that's it! You are wonderful. See what happens when we get older? My memory is not what it used to be.

I had lunch with my cousin on Third and 44th that day and then I walked over to L&T. This is definitely the place. Thank you so very much.

Now I'm hoping it won't be too cold to do the walk today. I'm meeting her this time on 2 Ave and 48 ST. Then I'll go to my husband's store on 3 Ave and 29-30 St. I love to walk but it may be too much of a detour in this weather. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for very much for your help.

Re: Felicia - what gorgeous wedding pictures!

I'm so glad they were still up. I do recall seeing them earlier, but I just have to say how beautiful I think your wedding was. Your photographer did a wonderful job. You have some magnificent outdoor shots. The weather was gorgeous I see.
I've never been to St. Paraskevi. I love the doors at the back of the church with the crosses. I must go sometime. My daughter was married at Holy Trinity GO church in Hicksville.
Oh....I have never seen such beautiful stefana! Did someone bring them from Greece? Usually they are small and all anyone sees are the ribbon hanging down he back. These were really special.

I wish you much happiness and a belated Congratulations. I'm sure your Greek hubby is as good to you as mine has been for almost 40 years now.

Mary

Re: Anyone familiar with mid-town Manhattan?

So glad to be a help Mary I wasn't sure that was the store you were thinking of (and I'm not even sure its still around, but I think it must be) but its the first place that came to mind based on your description

Thanks so much for your kind compliments on my wedding pictures, you are so very sweet My non-Greek family was amazed at the beauty of the Greek Orthodox ceremony and St. Paraskevi's is just an amazing church, I must say that it set the stage for a beautiful day overall

The stefana was beautiful and they were from Greece - nearly 75 years old mind you! We wore my husband's grandparents stefana during our ceremomy , which they had worn during their wedding ceremony over 60 years ago! It had become a tradition that all the grandchildren have worn the stefana as they have been married, and I was truly honored to be part of that. Even the priest made note of how beautiful the stefana was and honored Anthony's grandparents during the ceremony - it was so touching

So far my wonderful Greek hubby is treating me well - if he gets out of line I'll make sure he gets in touch with your husband to give him pointers!

Thank you again for your kind words!! Good Luck shopping today and have fun

Re: Anyone familiar with mid-town Manhattan?

Felicia, what a beautiful story. I had tears in my eyes just envisioning how proud your husband's grandparents must have been during your wedding.
Again, those stefana truly are gorgeous. I don't know how many Greek weddings you have been to, but nothing I have ever seen comes close. You have every right to feel honored to have continued in this beautiful family tradition.

I also want to let you know that the store was exactly where you said but the name is Cosmetics Market. The address is 9 E. 39 St. - in case anyone else wants to go. It's a great place. They have test samples and plenty of mirrors and tissues with little trash bins for people to try on all the different make-ups. I love that you don't have a salesperson after you as soon as you stop to look at a lipstick, like in a dept. store. And as we said, the prices are unbelievably cheap. The Estee Lauder items are the little sizes you get in the complimentary gift sets they often give out so I bought some of those too. It is definitely one of my best finds in the city. Thank you again for helping me locate it.
All the best to you.
Mary
