Italian brides? - sorta long vent

Hi girls,
For those of you who are italian...is anybody marrying into the german/irish culture? My FH's family is...I like them alot, but get alot of "it must be an italian thing" comments. It's really annoying. I'm also getting married at the villa lombardi's, and his parents are like "geeze there is alot of red sauced foods here, aren't there?". I also was told by his dad (after i told him i was having a canoli station filled to order) that he hate canoli's and all those "italian like" cookies.
Anyway, not sure if anyone experiences this, it's not all the time, but when it happens, it's obvious! Just venting....thanks!

I would put in a request to the photographer to be sure to capture your FFIL stuffing his face with a cannoli - you know he will!

I'm Italian/Irish and I'm marring German/Irish.
I haven't had to much of the "it must be an Italian" thing. Mostly because I'm not really doing many Italian traditions but....

Who doesn't like canoli's? I wish I had a canoli station! My favorite!!!!

I am Italian marrying someone with German background....haven't heard anything yet like that but I continually joke that our wedding is like My Big Fat Greek Wedding since my side of the family outnumbers his by at least 3x!!! I am sure at the actual wedding there will be comments. but yeah his family had never heard of canolis, I converted FI years ago and he loves them as much as me now!

I think those comments are just like any other comments people make when things are not done "their" way. You know? Best to ignore them. If you were Hispanic they would be saying "Sounds like a Spanish thing!" You can't win with certain people...

I know you guys are right...and i did blow them off...i'm just so sick of saying "that's just the way they are"...sometimes I'd REALLY like to call people like that to the carpet, ya know....oh well...i'll bite my tongue...it was just one of those comments where you're like ..."did they just say that?"

I'll be sure to get pictures of him eating "that red sauced food! and downing a canoli"!

FH and his family definitely do not understand why we have to have all the food we are having..why the big cocktail hour, why viennese hour, but in my family weddings are a big thing w/ lots and lots of food.

Yes, I am Italian and I am marrying into an Irish/Scotish family. FH's sister married an Italian too and I hear comments about him all the time, the whole "it must be an Italian thing" or he is cheap because he is Italian. It makes me uncomforable. If they don't like it I guess I won't share my yummy Italian recipes with them, so there!

Well I am italian and alot of my Fh's family is irish and german, however no "italian" comments here, which i am supprized. I wouldn't take things too seriously with them, it doesn't seem like they are trying to be rude or sound unintellegint when they talk. Though the red sauce thing might be a jab. Anyway, they could say alot more things. I would let it go unless it gets worse, more about italians and looks or other ethnic things besides food.

Hey, at least you don't get vegan commently like me!

That is sooo funny. Well I'm not,I'm marrying and Italian- Pollack lol. But my mother is Italian and my father is irish german, anyway she got the same exact thing except they didnt like her b/c she was Italian. Till this day they still treat her wierd. And she will never forgive them for all the things they've done through the years(its a lot of stuff) But you are definately lucky you guys get along. I just think the irish really dont understand us Italians..lol(even though i'm not 100% italian I was raised it 100%) I say just start cracking Irish jokes back at them! lol

add to the mix being from New York and Italian while your FI grew up in the south west VA and family in the midwest and is German/mix...... It's just different but when they experience it, although I think they may think it's a lot of food, etc, I think they like it!

I found this thread while doing a search for info about Greek weddings....I guess what the Greeks say about them and Italians (una fatza una ratza--not sure of the spelling--meaning one face, one race) is true. I mention the Greek because I'm Italian and Irish marrying a Greek man. Mom is full Italian and married my father who is half Italian and half Irish. The Irish hated her. They made comments all the time---even my father's Italian father made fun of Italians and refused to admit to his background---grandpa used to say "I'm American". Whatever! They made her feel so bad for so many years, always favoring their Irish daughter in-law....but when all was said and done....it was their Italian daughter in law who took them in when they were older and visiting from Florida. The Irish one never lifted a finger for them. Unfortunately, despite mom's experiences and good intentions...she's now acting the same way toward my Greek FH and in-laws...saying she just doesn't understand their Greek customs. I hate closeminded thinking!

I think Italians gravitate toward germans

I'm a mutt, but my mom married into a german/english family. It wasn't so much the italian comments that she got over the catholic comments.
