Am I wrong? SO MAD! Job Related

Am I wrong to be annoyed. I just found out at my new job that for extra hours we work we will not be paid over time or be given a comp’d day.. For example I came to direct an event at 7:30 this morning I usually start at 9) and am expected to work until quitting time 5:00.. I am not getting paid extra or given comp’d time for that 1 ½ hrs and was told it is “just part of the job” I am really pissed off and to make matters worse I found out that when we go on event trips..like for example we are going to Atlanta April 4-6… We will be there for 3 full days working at least 15 hrs per day and all we r getting is regular pay and maybe 1 comp’d day if we are lucky.. I am soo not happy upon hearing this news, and although I “like” this job, I am not thrilled with the way things are run around here.

It *****... but unfortunately thats comes with being a "salary" employee. They are not required to give you comp time for working extra hours.

Some jobs out there and some bosses are more lenient and generous on giving out comp time... but a lot of companies don't follow the same practice.

I think that is par for the course. Ask Cheryl, I know she plans events. I do too, but it is a small part of my job.

As a salried employee, we don't get overtime, whether we stay for or own work, or for an event.

We don't get overtime for events, even if means we are away for 4 days and technically "working": the whole time. We get a comp day if an event falls on a weekend.

One time they gave me a comp day to make up for travel time, b/c other people left ealry & my boss didn't go & they felt bad.

Re: Am I wrong? SO MAD! Job Related

I would be annoyed also.

Are you a Salary or Hourly employee?

I am a Salary Employee and I travel often. I do not receive overtime nor do I technically receive comp time.

However, I have unlimited sick days and basically make my own hours. My boss is very lenient with me as long as the work gets done. If I need a day here and there it's not a big deal.

I would have a talk with your boss to clarify things. Once you cool down that is.

You didn't know you were exempt before you took the job? Poor you! How misleading..

Personally, I would try to re-negotiate this in a hurry. Tell em you like your job but this really makes your hourly wage much less.

As much as it *****, it's part of the job as an exempt, salaried employee, if that is how you were hired.

Comp time is illegal (unless you are a public employee)

If you are a true exempt employee, you are not entitled to overtime wages.

You can go onto the DOL website for more info or you can FM me if you have specific questions:

exempt versus non-exempt

How can that be?

We get it it all the time, as a "bonus" because we don't get monetary bonuses.

and my husband works in IT (salaried) & is "on call" once a month & gets paid just for wearing his beeper for a week, gets paid extra if he has to work for more that 15 during that on call time ( on the phone) & I believe gets comp timr if he has to go in.

Employees cannot waive their right to receive over-time pay. Comp time is not equitable to overtime pay because:

Let's say someone earns $10 per hour. They work 5 hours of overtime: they would be owed $75.

If comp time is given instead of overtime payment, it's value is only $50, thus the employee is not receiving overtime payment.

It IS allowed for public employees, but not for private employees.

In New York, overtime is calculated on a weekly basis. After 40 hours per week, employees must be paid at 1 and 1/2 times their hourly rate.

Also, I just wanted to add that in many companies, they will go beyond what is required as an attraction or retention tool for staffing needs.

oh, ok, I get what you mean. Comp time is illegeal as a substitiute for over-time for hourly employees.

I am salaried & it is just considred a bonus or perk.

Actually, a true exempt employee will work until the job is done...meaning on MON, TUES and WED you might work 10 hour days, but then be done and not work at all on THURS...it's not really a perk, but companies like to make it seem like they're being really generous.

It stinks Michi, but it seem to be typical. Brad always works 9-10 hour days, but never gets paid overtime - even when he goes in on weekends! It drives me nuts.

Re: Am I wrong? SO MAD! Job Related

I worked in event planning in the city before my current job and it was the same thing. There were some hourly jobs at the company, but they were mostly secretarial. The rest of us got no overtime or comp time, and I was working VERY long hours--morning events, flying to California for a 3 day conference where I had to be up at like 3AM Cali. time because I worked for a Wall Street firm and we started everything when the opening bell on Wall Street in NY rang...Anyway, they did give us some great perks--everything first class (hotels, flights, etc.), any food we wanted, limos to airport, etc. BUT, the long hours was a large part of the reason why I left the job when I met my DH.

I can sympathize. I am one of two exempt staff level in my department, the other four are non-exempt. I understood going in I would have to work overtime, but I thought everyone else would too ! I've been there for a relatively short time and I'm already tired of it. Every night at 5:00 the place empties out and it is me and my superiors. For a while I wasn't even taking lunch so I could get stuff done so I could get out at 5:00 but then I realized they were going to keep me there anyway, so I make sure to take my full lunch break - AWAY from my desk ! LOL ! The thing that gets me pissed is - they never mentioned how much overtime was involved. I should have known.

Re: Am I wrong? SO MAD! Job Related

I'm a press officer for theatre/dance events and I've always, always had to stay late for shows. When I worked at the ballets, I worked 3-4 nights a week for 8 weeks straight during the spring season, plus about 3 Saturdays during that time. We were able to come in alte, or leave a little early, and at the end of the season, my boss would give me a couple days off.

In my current job, which is for a much larger organization, we have TOIL (time off in lieu) forms to fill out and we are comped for the same amount of time that we work overtime.
