I can sympathize. I am one of two exempt staff level in my department, the other four are non-exempt. I understood going in I would have to work overtime, but I thought everyone else would too ! I've been there for a relatively short time and I'm already tired of it. Every night at 5:00 the place empties out and it is me and my superiors. For a while I wasn't even taking lunch so I could get stuff done so I could get out at 5:00 but then I realized they were going to keep me there anyway, so I make sure to take my full lunch break - AWAY from my desk ! LOL ! The thing that gets me pissed is - they never mentioned how much overtime was involved. I should have known.
exactly! i take every last 2nd of my lunch break b/c no matter what at 5 to 5 they give me 600 things to do
thank you all for being so understanding, i guess it is common it just suxxx!!!!
to us alll!

That happens to my sister who is also a salaried worker. I hate to hear how they take advantage of employees like this. Sorry

I'm a press officer for theatre/dance events and I've always, always had to stay late for shows. When I worked at the ballets, I worked 3-4 nights a week for 8 weeks straight during the spring season, plus about 3 Saturdays during that time. We were able to come in alte, or leave a little early, and at the end of the season, my boss would give me a couple days off.In my current job, which is for a much larger organization, we have TOIL (time off in lieu) forms to fill out and we are comped for the same amount of time that we work overtime.

oh, ok, I get what you mean. Comp time is illegeal as a substitiute for over-time for hourly employees.
I am salaried & it is just considred a bonus or perk.![]()
Actually, a true exempt employee will work until the job is done...meaning on MON, TUES and WED you might work 10 hour days, but then be done and not work at all on THURS...it's not really a perk, but companies like to make it seem like they're being really generous.
unfortunately. . .my job is never done. . .

I work at least 3 weekends a year ( for conventions outside of NY) usually during the summer to make it worse and I don't get a comp day or paid for it.I guess it comes with the job!!!

Just wanted to add, from having worked in event planning, corporate event planning is not a very high-paying field (because they have no problem filling the positions because who doesn't like to plan events...), and always entails long and often odd hours.

I don't think I've worked a 40 hour week in over 5 years, unless of course I took vacation time. I average 50-55 per week; that's how long it takes me to get the job done. I rarely take a lunch break. Arrrgghh.

I can't really sympathize here. I have never had a job where I received overtime pay. On occassion I have received a comp day, but that is definately not the norm and only happened a few times (and not at all recently). It is partly why they have 'salary' vs. 'hourly' employees. Not to mention I traveled for years and was away from home Mon-Thurs, I got zip. The good thing is now I average 10-12 hour days, it used to be at least 14 hour days.
Unfortunately, I think this is more the norm and pretty common.

Although everyone says that this is the 'norm' i find it completly unacceptable and would love to tell my boss to F-off.. I swear If I am ever in a position of power I will run my business in a much better manner then any of us are obviously dealing with...food for thought tho..maybe we should all get off of LIW and go do some work

I am soo not happy upon hearing this news, and although I “like” this job, I am not thrilled with the way things are run around here.

I was thinking of you today after responding and reading this thread. Of course, 5:00 came and went tonight (at work 25 minutes early this morning and 15 minutes for lunch)and of course I had to ask my boss a question and he was in with the manager. So I waited 10 minutes, then I stand up and walk over to the manager's office and stand in the doorway (it wasn't like my boss couldn't see me - I sit directly in front of the manager's office. So of course he says 'Oh I'll be with you in a few minutes'. So now I'm thinking 'calm down'. Now I turn off the speakers on my computer (only thing that gets me through the day so I don't have to hear everyone else's conversations) And I overhear the two of them discussing MOVIES! ARGGGHHHHHH ! I was SO PISSED. So I say in a low tone - 'I would love to leave at 5 just once day' and the girl next to me says 'I feel sorry for you, I get paid for any overtime I do - but then again you get perks I don't' Anyway I am going to leave at 5:00 no matter what it takes. FH is going to ask for his ring back if I don't stop complaining about this ! LOL ! Anyway just wanted you to know I thought of you after this happened.
