NYC Teachers- tenure question
hellodoes anyone know if there is a phone number or a website to look up the status of one's tenure?
my payroll secretary made a phone call for me and seems to think i have already been awarded tenure. I worked for the BOE 3 years before resigning in 2001. i came back this year thinking that i needed to do another year but i applied for credit for my other years prior. when I asked the secretary to check on the status of my credit she told me that i already had tenure. i was never sent anything, not notified, NOTHING, so i want to double check this on my own. If anyone knows how, please let me know. thank you

Re: NYC Teachers- tenure question
I don't know about a phone number or web addy, and trying to get a live person on the phone is next to impossible. When I got tenure my AP very unceremoniously handed me a sheet of paper that stated that I had completed probation.
Did you do three full years as a certified teacher prior to when you left in '01? If you did then you would be tenured.
I wouldn't stress over it- the way the DOE is with paperwork, they could have sent out the paper and you didn't get it. Mine wasn't in an envelope or anything- it wasn't even a full sized sheet of paper!
Even if you have to finish out this year in order to get it, I would not worry. I look at some of the people I work with, and have concluded that if you have a pulse, you get tenure.
(Not knocking you, just some people I work with). What region are you in? Maybe call the HR office at the Region?

Re: NYC Teachers- tenure question
Thank youI did 3 full years before resigning, but someone had told me that I wouldnt receive tenure if i didnt go back the first day of the fourth year. I figured that if that were the case i could do just this year but now i am concerned because there is some talk about me coming in after the SBO transfer period, which means i have to reinterview for my position. either way im in region 4 so im going to try to contact someone at the regional office. thanks again for your response

Also call the UFT- I never heard that about having to come in for the first day of your fourth year. But you never know.

Re: NYC Teachers- tenure question
Was it difficult to get back in after resigning? I have been with the board for 8 years. I am thinking about resigning this year and going to a Nassau district. I just want to make sure that if things do not work out I can still go back to nyc doe.

Don't resign- look into taking a leave of absence, just in case you should get something in Nassau but then get excessed. You would be able to go back easier and whatever sick days you have banked will stay with out.

I'm also in region 4. Good luck with trying to get an answer! The BOE is real good not giving you info. You always have to find out things through word of mouth. I think your payroll secretary would be the one with the most updated info. about you in the system that you can get easy access info. It would have been nice if they did send a letter. I'm supposed to get tenure this year too, maybe I should also ask my payroll secretary. You get tenure after 3 full yrs. right?? Well good luck!

Re: NYC Teachers- tenure question
i was also told about the having to show up for the first day of your fourth year to actually receive tenure.i need to figure all this stuff out myself with thinking about wanting to have a family and taking a year off (and getting tenure at the end of next year).
getting answers from the DOE is next to impossible - let us know what you end up finding out!

Re: NYC Teachers- tenure question
I was tenured mid-year (I was appointed on Feb 1, or whatever date began the spring semester) but I assume that the next day would have started my fourth year as an employee.

You should as you're still employed. Then again, maybe check with payroll.
