Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

Take a small cape...update the cabinets at home depot and the countertops of famica (spelling?), paint a few walls, update a bathroom by taking down wallpaper and replacing a potty.....suddenly you can ask $500,00????? for an OK school district...

or

YOU GET a construction worker who buys a cape w/ NO GARAGE & NO BASEMENT....updates it w/ the nice hardwood floors, again, cheap cabinets & counter tops and says they are 'state of the art'....those nice crown moldings throughout house...make a few sky lights....redo the staircase...do a basic bathroom update....in an 'OK' school district....and ask $540,000???

i don't get it.

They are trying to rob us!

Re: Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

I have seen this WAY too many times!!! This is why majority of the young community (20-30's) is leaving NY...There is no way to afford this & still have to redo the house!

Re: Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

I assume you have been looking in Nassau County....Try looking in Suffolk county, you get more of a house for the price. Danielle and I looked in Merrick, Bellmore, Levittown, wantagh, and Bethpage and could not believe what people were asking for their houses. We finally started checking out western suffolk and see that we can actually afford some of the nicer houses for sale...If they were for sale in nassau county, the exact same house would be so much more...It is crazy.

Re: Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

Well i guess it all depends on what you are looking for....Danielle and i actually found a really nice cape that was completely redone, it was small but it had a full basement. It was prolly bought in really bad shape, redone, and put on the market....The bad thing about the house other than being small was that the backyard face the southern state parkway...If it was the only house Danielle and I looked at we would of probably purchased it...For a brand new 3 bedroom with 1.5 bath house the price of $369k wasnt bad at all.

Re: Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

Do you think they are only going to charge you extra for what it cost them to do the work? LOL not.

They will hit you up for extra in the price cause you are paying for the 'convienience' of already having the work done.

Re: Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

Levitt houses are crazy expensive...we looked at one in N wantagh for $448k and it still needed work...It was also very dirty....They were having an open house.

The taxes are also ridiculous in levittown, north wantagh.

Danielle and I looked at a house in Bellmore last weekend. It was a cape with 1 and a half baths, and 3 or 4 bedrooms....The house was $389k originally and it just went down to $375k. It had no rear yard, it was a corner, with no garage and the whole house needed to be gutted...The outside of the houses needed work too....Crazy.

Re: Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

craziness all the way. We bought two years ago and thought it was insane. My neighbor is selling his house, it's really nice, but small in Bethpage. We went in to see it and we found out he is asking $639,000!!!!!!!!

My house is bigger...so if I sell mine where can I move if Bethpage cost this much. I'll never be able to upgrade in NY. We bought for much less than that!

Re: Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

I am so glad that someone else can feel my pain.

DH and I went to an open house this weekend for a house in Huntington(Harborfields School District). The house was gorgeous, had an odd layout, but I loved it until I saw that the '3rd' bedroom and extra bath and a half were downstairs in the basement. Um, no thanks and the house backed up to park avenue(which is a main road). Also, they advertised the property as 0.62 acres and the whole backyard was one downward sloping hill, completely unusable.

They were asking $669,000.

So frustrating !!!! I thought we had found our house until I asked where the other rooms were.

Re: Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

DH and I have a house but we were looking online beause I really want to get out of NY. I'm sick of working just to pay for a house. We could by a huge 3600 sg ft home with 2 car garage, 4br, 3 bath, fireplaces (2), formal LR, DR, EIK, den, full basement, and .75 acre...for $249,000 in Ronaoke VA!! (My Mom lives there). I want to sell and go so bad....we wouldnt even have to take our a mortgage. DH wont move South because his famil (who we never see) live waaaay out east on LI. Just venting!!

Re: Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

Eventually you will realize that all of the houses are overpriced. If you wait for a deal, you will end up being houseless for a long time. Instead, of looking for a bargain look for a house that you are not being ripped off with.

Was our house a 'bargain?' No. But were we ripped off? No.

Re: Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

This place that we looked at was a complete ripoff. I mean the 3rd bedroom and the other bath and a half were in the basement. They were riding the school district's name, which is fine in my opinion, but the place was an absolute ripoff.

Re: Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

We saw a lot of houses that were like that. We found a house in South Merrick for $409k. It was tiny....New redone kitchen, hard wood floors, wood fireplace....3 bedrooms, 1 bath, no basement and no upstairs....You walk in the front door, sneeze and you are out the back door already. Our apartment now is bigger than this house....The property is a corner lot, that seemed decent in size. It wasnt huge...There was also a driveway and a garage in the back....but the house needed updating...And if you wanted to expand in the future you could....

Re: Girls looking to buy a home - don't you hate this?

exactly ladies..they are using the cheapest materials ... so 'chincy' if that's a word LOL..

If you know quality....you won't get ripped off. It's just so tiresome to search for someone selling a house for what it is worth.

I am not handy - neither is my FH.. I don't know...
People say to make your first house an investment house and then upgrade to your 'forever house'.

In my permanent house I would hope to have an original kitchen that I can do up the way I Love (cherrywood cabinets....granite countertops....backsplash w/ my style....stainless steel appliances...)

What do you think? Buy an OK house make a few bucks on it and then upgrade?

Or, search for the right location and right school district (for the kiddies) right away and stay there forever?
