Repost from BHB, because I really need help here! E-ring question

Hey Ladies - I don't have an e-ring yet. $ was a little bit of an issue for a while, but we're ring shopping now and I should be getting one soon.

I have a question regarding the metal your ring is made out of: Platinum has reached an all time high lately, and it is SO expensive...
is it worth it?

Please select your metal, and share any stories you might have. (pros/cons)

I definitely want a white/silver setting.

TIA

Re: Repost from BHB, because I really need help here! E-ring question

My ring is a family ring...my dad gave it to my mom 25 years ago and after hepassed away she put it in storage for me one day. It is platinum but it was bought so long that I can't even say how much the metal on it would be worth now.

Good luck though!

Re: Repost from BHB, because I really need help here! E-ring question

aw Vicky, that is a great story. Your ring is very special.

I think we'll end up with the platinum - I want a very antique-looking ring, and I think the natural wear of the platinum would complete the look.

It's so much $$$ though!

Re: Repost from BHB, because I really need help here! E-ring question

I had originally wanted platinum...but a few of my friends have platinum rings and told me I should go with whtie gold because the white gold upposedly holds up better and is easier to buff out cratches than with platinum. The jewler my FH went to also said this.

Re: Repost from BHB, because I really need help here! E-ring question

i originally wanted platinum, but the cost and the maintenance on it didn't make it worth it to me. i have white gold and love it. my band is very thin so if it was platinum, it wouldn't even make a difference.

its all about personal preference.

good luck

Re: Repost from BHB, because I really need help here! E-ring question

I am ring shopping too now with FH, and he actually wants to spend more $$ than I do, but $$ is a question. Platinum IS the in thing, but I am thinking white gold too because it is stronger and better for day to day wear.

I think you're better off putting the extra money you would save into a slightly better diamond. A setting you can upgrade a lot easier (and cheaper) down the road....that's just my humble opinion (and plan of action too)

Good luck.

I have platinum and love it. I've worn it every day for over a year now - and I'm very active and hands-on - and it doesn't show any wear...yet.

Good luck!

Re: Repost from BHB, because I really need help here! E-ring question

I have 14K white gold. It has the look I wanted for the price he wanted. I didn't care to mcuh about the metal to be honest. I was much more interested in the diamonds.

I have platinum. It has a lot of scratches on the underside, but I amr eally happt with it.

Also keep in mind, for example, my sister's weddng band is a platinum.white gold mix, so it'll hold up better at work..you cna consider that too!

Re: Repost from BHB, because I really need help here! E-ring question

I have platinum...I always wanted a platinum ring and that's what I got...I thought of it this way, what else am I ever going to have that is made from platinum. I think both white gold and platinum are beautiful and durable. White gold can get a yellow tint after many many many years but the platinum will stay the silverish color. Your ring will be gorgeous whatever you choose!

Re: Repost from BHB, because I really need help here! E-ring question

I am not sure where people are getting information about the durability of gold vs. platinum.. FSIL is a jewler, and she is the one FH got the ring from. She said that platinum definitely is stronger than gold. SO far mine does have scratches, but I think anything would after wearing it everyday. I am going to get it cleaned and polished by FSIL when we go to visit for Easter, I'll let you know how it looks after that!
FH wants a titanium wedding band!

I voted platinum. I have a ruby as my center stone and loved the way it sparkled with platinum.

Re: Repost from BHB, because I really need help here! E-ring question

My ring is platinum. Initially, I told FI I didn't care whether it was white gold or platinum. However, when he met with the jeweler, the pros and cons were discussed. I am allergic to some white gold jewelry, so FI decided on platinum because of this and the fact that platinum is durable. I love my ring! My ring also has scratches but that's because I am clumsy and always bang into things.

Re: Repost from BHB, because I really need help here! E-ring question

i always wanted platinum. but FH got me white gold. i have not thought differently since the day i got it. i always thought i'd be able to tell with the white gold. but for me, the setting hardly shows any band at all. now i am glad i don't have to match it with a platinum band because it is soo expensive.

go white gold. trust me!

Re: Repost from BHB, because I really need help here! E-ring question

I have platinum... i really didn't care as long as it wasnt yellow gold...the ring I originally showed to FI that I liked was white gold... but since I am an art teacher, and a bit clumsy... FI decided to go with the platinum... the jeweler and everyone else said the particular setting he choose would hold up better in the platinum vs. the white gold... it all looks the same to me, so whatever!!
