Do you wear your wedding band and/or engagement ring on an interview?

I know there was a post on this a while back. I am going on teaching interviews and was wondering what everyone does. I know there was a few people that said not to, but am still wondering why.

Re: Do you wear your wedding band and/or engagement ring on an interview?

Just out of curiousity, why wouldn't you? It looks bad if you're trying to get a job and you're married? That kind of baffles me a bit. I wore mine on my job interview. Even if there is a very good reason NOT to wear them, I don't think I'd take my rings off and act unmarried for the sake of getting a job. That's just me though.

The posters had a reasoning behind it and I cannot remember what it was. I have always worn mine, but remembered this today and cannot find the post. That's why I posted this question so I could find out what the reasoning was behind it.

Re: Do you wear your wedding band and/or engagement ring on an interview?

I went to a job fair for teachers and I saw a woman take off her rings and put them in her pocket. I didn't know why she did that and I still don't understand. But maybe someone does know a good reason.

Education is a field that's fairly gender-balanced, but I still recall being interviewed by more men than women. And men are clueless about that stuff. I don't see an AP or principal who is about to interview someone saying to himself, 'Must remember to check for wedding ring!'

Re: Do you wear your wedding band and/or engagement ring on an interview?

The reason is because they see you as married, and ready to settle down, have a family and they look at you as only useful for a good few years and that's it. Sad...but true, very true.

Well, I definately hope somebody posts that knows about it. I'm curious to see why. I didn't doubt that there's a reason not to wear them. I just don't think that I could ever NOT wear them. Plus, I think it would look a little strange if I was hired for a job looking like I was unengaged and unmarried and then suddenly, as soon as I started I was wearing both rings.

Okay, that makes sense, but it is indeed sad. Wouldn't the person that hired you feel lied to in a way though? I would just worry that it would cause trust issues between you and your boss.

I agree with you on that one. Someone at my current job did do that and when they saw her wear her ring one day, they even had the nerve to say, YOU LIED TO US. But it is possible that they might not have seen her as the 'hard worker, dedicated' employee had she been wearing her ring

Well, I can definately see now why it would be a hard decision whether to wear your rings to an interview or not. You could always keep your hands folded in your lap with your right hand over your left

Re: Do you wear your wedding band and/or engagement ring on an interview?

Actually this topic came up in my HR law class recently. Women may feel the need to take their rings off because many employers feel that if a woman is married they will work for a few years or so and then quit because they want to have children. In all honesty it *****, but its true. Employers have no right to even ask these questions because they should only be asking questions that should pertain to the job they are trying to fill. Just be careful.

Re: Do you wear your wedding band and/or engagement ring on an interview?

I actually have posted on this in the past - what I had written was that I never wore my engagement ring on interviews (before I was married). The way I saw it was (and a couple of people said this to me too) if they see you with an e-ring - they know you're getting married in the near future and may start a family soon.
Since I've been married - I've worn my wedding band because they really don't know how long you've been married for and for all they know - you could already have kids!

Re: Do you wear your wedding band and/or engagement ring on an interview?

I've interviewed people that have told me outright that they have no kids and aren't planning on having any. Even told me that they don't have anyone special in their lives. I wouldn't care either way, but people feel the need to tell that to get the job. BTW-those people didn't get the job.

Re: Do you wear your wedding band and/or engagement ring on an interview?

WOWZA - I always thought it was the other way around! Even before I was engaged, I always wore a simple ring on my ring finger during interviews, on the off chance they might think I was married, i.e. married=more responsibilities=more stable=less of a reason to job hop. Now I may not necessarily agree with the above equation, but I guess when I was younger, I wanted to appear older and more mature. Seems pretty silly now that I think about it!
