Apprentice/Work related? Pulling an all nighter?
I saw the apprentice, and read the comments and JMO but just b/c someone can not pull an all nighter IMO does not mean something negative..I think once in awhile if its truly necessary it is ok to stay awake to get work done.... but to stay awake for 24 straightr hrs.. or 48 hrs or more without sleep is insane.. IMO..You need sleep to function, thats like expecting pple to work efficiently without eating for a day or two.. Any one else have an opinion on this

um, yeah....no.
I gotta disagree. I think my work is worth it. I actually don't mind it either.
I'll pull an all-nighter to get a major project done. Once its done and I get to go home and go to sleep for a day I get the feeling of self-satisfaction that I accomplished something major.

pill, you have a much better work ethic than I do!!!I get too cranky, and my work gets subpar when I'm awake too long.

Perhaps. My body is used to it though. I normally work 60hr weeks every week anyways from my fulltime job and my DJing.
So I am used to starting work at 9am and working till 4am. A few more hours after 4am doesn't make or break it.

Re: Apprentice/Work related? Pulling an all nighter?
I couldn't. If I went all night without sleep I would be no good to the job. If I were to get a few hours of sleep in then get back to work I would do a much better job.Whether the job is worth it or not, I know my physical needs and I need a little sleep to function.

Yeah but remember you are relatively new to the modern day workfroce. This is common practice for a lot of companies.
Of course i'd rather sleep too... but doing stuff like this makes you look good... and leads to good things in the future when it comes to raises, promotions, etc.
This is how you get ahead in the workforce.

Re: Apprentice/Work related? Pulling an all nighter?
But Trump mentioned that his employees pull all nighters occassionally - so it's something that he sees as necessary. If you can't do it, maybe you shouldn't be his apprentice. I think that's what the post you're referring to meant.I've done it and found it exhilarating. But I wouldn't want a job that expected it from me often.

Re: Apprentice/Work related? Pulling an all nighter?
I think there is a difference between working hard and working stupid. If you pull an all nighter but walk around aimlessly that is not true work, that is just playing the role of a martyr to say that you pulled an all nighter.
The people who I know pull all nighters do not expect praise for it.

It depends on what kind of job. I've been in the 'workforce' for many years and never had a job that ever required all nighters. So it all depends on the kind of job.

Re: Apprentice/Work related? Pulling an all nighter?
I have pulled many all nighters and it comes with the job. I wouldn't be happy if it was a normal occurance, but if an issue arose that needed to be done, I would stay.

True... but it is expected from a lot of companies on a very occasional/rare occurance.
And no job really 'requires' them so to say.

Re: Apprentice/Work related? Pulling an all nighter?
What got me was that those 2 people went to sleep not knowing if the work would get done--they were willing to not finish a project so they could sleep. I don't enjoy all nighters (though I took many in college), and I don't think I work so well when exhausted, but I would never leave a project when it is due the following morning without knowing I completed it to the best of my ability.

Re: Apprentice/Work related? Pulling an all nighter?
For high-salary jobs, most have to do it one time or another in their career. If that's what it takes to get a job done, that's what it takes, and that's what they're getting paid for.

What am I talking about high-salary? My husband works for Con Ed, and he has worked doubles. He doesn't mind the OT.

I am sure he gets paid 'double' for his OT too.
I think the topic here is assuming you DIDN'T get paid any OT... how do you feel about all-nighters.
If I got paid OT... i'd be doing an all-nighter every other day.

Re: Apprentice/Work related? Pulling an all nighter?
FFIL just retired last year --- he worked for the LIRR.The last 5 years before retiring, he worked 6 days a week - 4 of those days were 16 hrs, 2 were 12 hours. Do you have ANY IDEA how much work that is!?!? He got TREMENDOUS OT, and increased his pension like you wouldn't believe.
Now he sits on the couch all day and sleeps.
