Repost from Home boards--Need info. on Port Jeff Station Area...

Looked at an apartment today on Union and Maple. Not thrilled with apartment but it's very inexpensive and the kids will go to excellent schools compared to where we are now. Can anyone tell me if the area around Union is safe, living by the LIRR worries me alittle. Also what are the gas and electricity expenses like there? Any info. would greatly be appreciated I would need to give her a deposit ASAP. Thanks

The Port Jeff Train Station is actually a block away. Im not sure of the main road it's off but I think it's 112. If you stay on this road you come right into the village of Port Jefferson by the ferry.

yes thats 112, the road the train station is on. I used to live off of norwood and went to Comsewogue hs and that area is decent. Some parts, like near the train station, dont look too pretty, but where I used to live, the neighborhoods were clean and quiet. My cousin used to live in some apartments near the ferry and he loved it.

Re: Repost from Home boards--Need info. on Port Jeff Station Area...

Yeah the house looks old inside, not bad really outside. Like I said we're not thrilled with the apartment but it's not expensive and the landlord doesnt mind all the kids which is what we've really been coming up against and the school district is excellent. Im just worried about what you usually find hanging around the train stations atleast I see it here in Nassau where we are. I dont want the kids to be embarassed either when they tell people where they live(we all know what peer pressure is like)and sometimes like here in Freeport if you live on the wrong side of sunrise hwy. even though the houses are just as nice the kids get criticised. Silly I know but I just want to make sure the kids are as comfortable as possible. We also have to pay our own utilities so if it's very expensive that way I'd rather find an all included apartment that's alittle nicer for what it would cost in total with this one. Im rambling sorry. Again any info. is very much appreciated. Thanks

Re: Repost from Home boards--Need info. on Port Jeff Station Area...

I have been house hunting recently and know that there are a billion apartments in the Sound Bead Area... which is Rocky Point and Miller Place Schools... both good school districts... (just in case you still have reservations abotu the apt you just saw!)

Re: Repost from Home boards--Need info. on Port Jeff Station Area...

I teach in Miller Place and live in Port Jefferson Station. Are you talking east or west of 112? IMO I would stay as far from the railroad tracks as possible- The Norwood section, which is west of 112 is nice, but you have to be careful- the further inland you are the better. If it is very close to the main road of 112, I would think twice.

do you mean stay away from where the train station is or the train tracks in general??

Re: Repost from Home boards--Need info. on Port Jeff Station Area...

This apartment is about a block if that from the train station it's self. FH works in Melville and could probably be transferred eventually to Patchogue if something comes available but Miller Place is too far of a commute he says. Thanks for the info. though. Please FM and let me know what the concerns are for the area. Thanks again!

Re: Repost from Home boards--Need info. on Port Jeff Station Area...

I live in Pt Jeff Station as well (BriBri...where are you?)
I'd also recommend staying as far away from the tracks as possible. It is not a BAD area, but it's probably the worst part of the town, IMO.
The schools are good, and the town itself is good, that's just not the greatest area.

Feel free to FM me if you have any ??'s...I've lived here all my life
