Growing up how did your family handle family birthdays?

Growing up I had a few parties, but with friends and never my family. Now, my parents send cards, but I never hear from any other family members. FH always has a family party for his birthday (even now), and it seems like his family cares so much more than mine. So I know how you feel.

I'm sorry to hear that. That stinks.
We didn't usually do big things. My mom would usually ask me growing up if I wanted to have a party or go out to dinner with my family - I chose go out to dinner. But my parents usually made it special for us.
Now, my dad usually send a card with a check. It makes me sad that he doesn't even call me. I think it's usually cause I have talked to him a day or 2 before, but still it makes me sad. DH mom usually has us over for cake and presents which is sweet.

Re: Family Birthday poll
I feel a little better now after reading your post. I know that I am not the only one but sometimes it feels that way.I come from a large family and we are all different ages. I can only remember growing up celebrating for me and my sister (the one just over me) but never remember doing anything for any other brother or sister. And that it is how it remained now that we are grown.
This all comes from my uncle making a big deal out of the fact that we are not making a big deal out of my mothers upcoming 70th birthday.
My family has never been one for making any kind of deal out of someones birthday. YES we all call and give something to my parents but never make a big deal out of it.
We are actually planning a 50th wedding ann for them next year. And that would be the first wedding anniversary that we as a family have ever even celebrated.
We just are that KIND of family!!!!

You can make your kids feel extra special on their birthdays to make up for the days when yours might have been overlooked!

My family always make a semi big deal about birthdays. We go out to a nice dinner and have a cake.

Re: Family Birthday poll
As a kid, I used to have parties, as I got older, we would have dinner as a family (mom, dad, brother and me) and now that I live out of the house, it is just come over for cake type thing.

Re: Family Birthday poll
We do it by season. All the spring bdays are celebrated together. All of the summer, fall and winter bdays too. There are too many of us to be able to get together for each bday. and with my brother only having his daughters every other weekend, that limits us even more.

That's a good way to do things. In FH's family, there are all double birthdays anyways, so they get lumped together.

Re: Family Birthday poll
We celebrated kind of between a small dinner and a big bang. We would have immediate family and close friends over, have a big dinner, open gifts, and have cake. The house was always decorated and we almost always had balloons, even when my brothers and I were older

Re: Family Birthday poll
I wouldn't say there were parties - my family is 16 people whether we're sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner or pizza on a Friday night. They're pretty close and always together. We would always have BBQ's for summer birthdays and cake and coffee for winter birthdays. So it was more of a family thing...but also birthdays tended to be grouped together - 2 or 3 at a time because they all fall from June onwards. Now, it's a card because I'm so far away, although my parents came to visit for my birthday last year and we went out for a nice dinner.

Re: Family Birthday poll
My mom always made a big deal out of our birthdays for us which made me feel so special. Whenever it was our birthday we got to pick the restaurant we wanted to go to and then we got to pick out our cake. We still do this
In my FI's family b-days I feel arent as big a deal....and that made me a little sad.
I want to carry on the tradition that my family has when I have kids.

When I was a kid, it was big parties up until about 10. Then it was small parties with friends. The teen brithdays were spent with friends. The most recent ones- 20-23 are spent with FH, and my brother and sister, cake and dinner.Welcome New Vendors
