Depends....but let me just say one of the best shower gifts I got was a bunch of random things off my registry put together..stuff people probably wouldn't end up buying (of course from a very recent bride!)

It depends on what's on the registry. I usually end up buying knives and silverware since it's something the couple will use often.

I usually have an idea of how much I want to spend and then buy according to that amount. So if there is one large item that fits the amount, I get that, otherwise I get a bunch of smaller things for that amount.

I usually look at what is on the registry and what item fits best with what I had planned on spending.

I do the same, but it also depends what is left b/c I am a one of those late buyers.
For my friends shower that just passed, I got her 4 baking pans, then the 'accessories', measuring cups, cookie spatula, cookie cutters, then put flour, white and brown sugar, vanilla extract, sprinkles, choc chips, a few other things.
And I made a small dessert cookbook. It was the best gift I've ever given
And so much fun to make!

I usually go outside the box and away from the registry and gift a theme of gifts...

I've done both - it depends on the person I usually make baskets for people that I am closer with.

Re: SHOWER GIFTS - 1 Big thing or lots of little things??
I'd rather buy and receive the bigger gift, because most people like to buy the little things . ..

Re: SHOWER GIFTS - 1 Big thing or lots of little things??
I usually give 1 big gift because its easier, but for my shower my sisters put together a huge bag of all the little things (esp kitchen stuff) and i loved it, cuz its stuff that I would've had to buy anyway.

Re: SHOWER GIFTS - 1 Big thing or lots of little things??
I always try and go in on a big item with another person. that way my amount is doubled and I can afford to get an even bigger item off registry

Re: SHOWER GIFTS - 1 Big thing or lots of little things??
I'm sorry, but I always buy of the registry. I know even though some gifts I liked, it better for the couple to get them something they want

Re: SHOWER GIFTS - 1 Big thing or lots of little things??
It depends on how well I know the bride - if not so well I just go off the registry If I do know her well then I usually try to get her something special but that I know she likes (Tiffany vase, candlesticks, etc)

I did this once, lots of little things, and it got rave reviews.

Re: SHOWER GIFTS - 1 Big thing or lots of little things??
I will usually buy 1 fairly big/medium size gift from the registry, then get creative with some little stuff too. For one friend who registered for a george forman grill, I got that and made a basket of marinades that I know she and her FI would like.

Re: SHOWER GIFTS - 1 Big thing or lots of little things??
Well I like both ideas. We chose a lot of OXO utensils/gadgets that in and of themselves arent that costly. I think it may be nice to receive a bunch of them at once. I give gifts like that - it shows creativity.

Re: SHOWER GIFTS - 1 Big thing or lots of little things??
i LOVE to buy a ton of 'little' things. I love making gift baskets and making it look pretty with the wrapping and ribbon etc. i go by cost as well, if there arent enough smallish items to fill a decent size basket, then i will get one big item, but that is why i buy early so i have the opportunity to do this!Welcome New Vendors
