Any other 'short brides' - dresses?

For the other 'vertically challenged' brides out there, where did you get your dresses? I have only recently started to look, but since I'm short (5' 1'), they look like I'm playing dress-up in y mom's clothes?

Re: Any other 'short brides' - dresses?

I don't think your height really matters... they will alter any dress to fit you right. The samples only come in one size. A lot of them were really long on me and I am 5'4

Re: Any other 'short brides' - dresses?

I'm 5'2' (almost) and my gown is an empire waist a-line. It has a lot of beading on the bottom and required a hollow to hem measurement to be made to my height, so my 'shortness' was a non-issue.

Re: Any other 'short brides' - dresses?

Ok I am 5'0..I am getting a ballgown style dress...some words of advice that I recieved as I have been looking ...if it has work on the bottom make sure that it does not come up to high...that makes you look shorter...also the simpler the better because then it looks to busy and its too much dres

Re: Any other 'short brides' - dresses?

I'm 4'11 and found that Anne Barge has a great selection of dresses shorter girls. I happened to meet her at a trunk show when I bought my gown and she said she designs with petite ladies in mind. She herself is a tiny little thing. Just a a thought...

Good luck!

Re: Any other 'short brides' - dresses?

I'm 5'4' and I have a hard enough time buying pants, so shopping for my dress was an adventure! But I went with a gown that has beading on the bottom. So when I ordered it they measured me from hem to hollow so that it would come in the right height, as well as the right size. It's pretty much paying for alterations now rather than later!

Re: Any other 'short brides' - dresses?

I am 4'11 and my gown in a Sally Crew design. I purchased the dress from Bridal reflections in Massapequa - I think my gown is a Modified A-line cut. My Mom says it makes me look taller!

Re: Any other 'short brides' - dresses?

I think I beat everyone here -- I'm 4'8' I thought I would have a big problem shopping too, but it was actually hard to decide on the dress! I stuck with these things:
- Didn't try on anything too 'pouffy' because it would overwhelm me.
- No drop waists
- The dress I eventually ended up loving had more of a 'young' look, which I guess avoided the dress-up look. You can see it
here.

ETA: A-lines or modified A-lines are also very good. Anything with a more slim line will make you look taller!

I am 5'4' too. ANd I had the smae thing, bc/ my fress had beadign & embroidery. After in came in, they picked the straps up, so the wehole thign fell how it was supposed to, & the waist wasn't too low.

It is dificult b/c the dress samples are so long, but many bridal salons have a paltform you can stand on & that definitely helps you picture how the dress will look in your size.

Certain dress shapes flatter certain types of short. I have a long torso & short legs, so dropped wais looked awful on me, but a- line worked perfectly.
Drop waist worked for my short cousin thogh, because it elongated her torso. So try on different shapes first, to get an idea, then look for specific dresses.

ETA- teany your dress is gorgeous!

Here is my dress:

Re: Any other 'short brides' - dresses?

I am 5 foot and really didn't have a problem at all. My dress is an Allure, A line, tight bodice. The only probelm I ran into but it's fine since I am wearing pretty high heels is that they considered special ordering the dress because there is beading on the bottom (and may have head to have it moved up), but there was enough room for the hem so it was fine.

Im 4'10 the dress can be altered to fit you. I had lots of beading and lace on the bottom and it was fine.

Thanks! I think what helped is that there's no real 'line' in the waist (if that makes sense) so there are no interruptions in the fabric and that helps give the illusion of being taller. I tried on a couple of dresses by this designer and they all were flattering. I think her dresses are only available in the area at Kleinfeld, though.

I second getting a good seamstress. I don't think it really matters where you go. Just keep trying on dresses until you find one that looks flattering on you. Good luck!!!
