NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
I have very curly hair and have always thought of straightening my hair, with the wedding/HM coming up now seems like the time to try it. Has anyone had it done? If so do you like it?

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
I am only speaking from hearsay cause i have never had it done... BUT i have very curly hair too and i wanted it done... i didnt because a my moms friend said she loved it but it was a lot of upkeep cause when it grows back the roots are obviously curly... I am not good with going to get my hair cut./done regulary basically cause with long curly hair i dont find it super necessary for me..but with the japanese straightening i felt i would have to do much more work with it and i didnt want to

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
Everyone I know who has done it - LOVES it! My mom goes to Hayato in Manhattan. I love this salon and I know that the straightening is very affordable there. Around $200 compared to $800. It's a Japanese salon so they're very good at it.
Wherever you go, make sure you go with someone who does it all the time. Some people have done it but not enough experience. Experience with formulation is important but also endurance. It may sound weird but it's an exhausting process for the hair stylist. If they're not used to it (3 hours of straight ironing your hair) they'll get sloppy towards the end.

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
definitely look around for a reputable place... i also havent had it done, but have heard a ton of different opinions on it, one friend had it done and loves it, my moh who is a make up artist said she has seen a ton of people w/ it but their hair looks too flat, lifeless. it is a lot of upkeep as well... i wouldnt do something so drastic before the wedding imo

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
I've had it, and so has one of my bridesmaids. I have very long, thick, wavy, frizzy hair naturally. I had it done almost 2 years ago, and my hair is still perfectly straight.
My BM's hair is thicker than mine and hers is really curly. She's had it done 3 times in the last 2 years. We both LOVE it. We wash our hair and go. Maybe blow dry it if you don't want to leave the house with it wet. In either case, you don't need to flat iron, pull w/a brush or any other of the things you usually have to do when you style your hair in the morning. Just wash it and it comes out straight.
The only draw back is the lack of variety in your style. The first year, I would put hot rollers in it for an hour only to have my hair fall flat within about 30 minutes of removal. I still am glad I had it done.
If you are interested, the place we went to is Hidi Hair, around 32nd street.

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
I love it!!!!!!! My MOH actually got me on it, and I got my mom on it....I have curly hair, but my roots come in straight....my mom has super course and super kinky hair, and it looks fabulous. I get mine done about every 8-9 months...my mom gets it done ever 5-6 months. It costs from $150-300 depending on length, and it's the best decision I have seriously made!
FM me if you need any more information!

I have a friend with really curly hair that had it done. I was great at first, but she is going to stop because it was causing a lot of breakage and damage to her hair. Go to a few places and get consultations first. Good luck!

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
I GET MINE DONE IN BROOKLYN AROUND THE CORNER FROM MY HOUSE FOR $150 - $200 EVERY 8-9 MONTHS, DEPENDING ON THE LENGTH OF MY HAIR.
HIGHLY RECM'D.
ALSO, THERE'S A PLACE IN THE SITY CALLED "SEI" SALON - WHICH IS BASICALLY THE ORIGINAL "CREATOR" PER SE SALON TO DO JAPANESE STRAIGHTENING, AND THEY CHARGE AROUND $300.

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
I have never a problem- people alswasy compliment my hair- alot depends ont he person doing it and the product they use- I have used a few- and have been a model at the hair show in the city
I would highly recommend it to anyone- but I wouldn't go with the cheapest deal either- you need to make sure the person doing it has taken the class- some products can't go on your roots- or bye bye hair

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
Hi,
I had it done for $600 including tip at a salon in manhattan in dec of 2003. My hair at that time was down to my elbows.
The real name for the procedure is called Thermal Reconditioning (TR). I had it done by a Korean Salon in Manhattan. It was beautiful. For like 4 weeks I couldn't put it behind my ear, ponytail or anything. I had to be careful leaning back on a chair for fear of a bend coming. After that it was beautiful.
UNTIL
the roots came in. I was told to go in again at 6 months. My hair was ok until about 8 months. But I didn't cuz I didn't want to spend the money.
The salon I went to:
Kim Sun Young 30W. 32nd St. #2 Fl., New York, N.Y. 10001 Phone: 212-695-8152, 212-695-1075 Fax: 212-563-0615 Email: info@kimsunyoungny.com
There is a really good forum on TR at: http://www.lamasbeauty.com/talk/salon/ I found the salon based on reviews I read at the forum. I had it done by this guy name Brian and it was good. There is a guy there named Jason who is supposedly much better (and a longer wait list). Jason is good if you have color treated or damaged hair.
If you get it done by the wrong person who doesn't do it right, you do have the risk of having all your hair ruined. (Check out the bad stories at the forum.)
Hope this helps! FM for more info/details.

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
How is this process different from "traditional" relaxing processes? I'm just curious b/c I've had my hair chemically straightend before and I hear all sorts of good things about the Japanese process, but I know it's a lot more expensive. It used to cost me under $100 for the chemical straightening as compared to the $2-800 Japanese process.

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
I just wanted to bring this post up again b/c I got my hair straightened for the second time. I loved it the first time, and love it even more now! Especially b/c I just paid $100 - YES...$100 for my hair. I went in at 11am, and I was out by 2:30 (typical timing) - My hair comes down a little past my shoulder blades, and was prepared to pay about $150-$200 - when the woman told me $100 - I seriously almost fainted!
Anyway, if anyone's interested...FM me, and I'll give you add'l info.

I tried it like a month ago... my hair is really curley. I thought about doing it for a long time, like you a was really nervous. So I got it done... and i dunno my hair is still pretty curley, just easier to blow dry. I paid $530.00. Its not bad to try, but don't be upset if it doesnt work.

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
Funny this thread is here today. I just had my hair done today by my salon and I was talking to them about the straightening. My hair is really super fine and wavy in certain places. My colorist and my hairdresser both said no way to the straightening. They instead suggested for my hair the relaxing. First, since I am highlighted, they recommend some deep vitamin treatments and then in about 2 weeks getting the relaxing. The relaxing treatments have come a long way. I'll let you know how it turns out. I would like to not worry about the frizzies for the summer.

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
I had to reply to this post. I have VERY VERY curly hair. It curls from the root and i NEVER EVER wear it curly. I have had Japanese Straightening (aka Thermal reconditioning aka Magic Perm) 3 time in 3 years. I have to say that I do love it!!!!! But there are definately positives and negatives. OK...the first time i got it done i had high lighted my hair about 1 month prior. It did come out very straight but it was VERY dry and stiff for the 1st 3 weeks or so. When i came out of the shower, if i didn't blow dry it it would definately dry pin, pin straight (which my hair never would do), but to get to not to look so dry i would have to blow dry it. I would not have to pull it straight at all, but the blow drier would give it a more "polished" look and feel. and if i wanted REALLY shiny i would pass the iron through it quickly. So i would say that the first time was not "wash and go" hair but much much more manageable than what i used to have to deal with. and no matter what the weather was it would stay "Stick" stright. The second time i got it done was the best!!!! My highlights at that point was a year old so i didn't get that very dry look at all. in fact, i would say this time i did have wash and go hair. I never even took out the iron and would only use the blow drier so i would not have to go out with wet hair. i loved it so much. I just got it done for the 3rd time in MAy. it came out much better than the first time but not as good as the 2nd. i have to say that this is partly my fault. i got a little careless with it. After you have it done you are supposed to wait a full 48 hours b4 you wash it. you can't put it behind your ears or even put it back lightly at all b/c you will leave a mark and if you wash it too soon, it might not take as well. I waited about 2 days to wash it, but the previous time i wait 3-4 and this time b/c i had work during that time, i found myself putting my hair behind my ear constantly. So a a result, when i let it air dry there are some "imperfections". but nothing that the blow drier doesn't take care of. So now i do have to dry it but it takes me about 20 minutes as opposed to 1 hr of blow drying and 20 minutes of straightening b4 i had the thermal reconditioning done. so for me it is so worth it. It stays sooooooo straight even in the most humid and rainy weather, which no one can believe b/c even with the slightest humidity, my curly hair would frizz so much b4 the TR. If your hair grows fast, your roots will grow in fast and they will be curly. some people have said it grows in less curly, but i have not found that to be true. Mine are the same as they were b4. Also, for the 1st 2-4 weeks your hair tends to be hard, but it WILL soften and feel normal again. Trust me, b/c i was sooo worried about that. In fact, it starts to look the best 1 month after getting it done. SO i am planning to d it again about 1.5 months b4 my wedding. I do plan to wear my hair all up for the wedding and it is totally possible to put curling irons and hot styling tools to it as long as you wait about 1 month they say and as long as you do not do it a lot. So if you have a wedding hairstlye that it up in mind, don't worry, you can do it. If anyone has anymore questions feels free to FM me. I would love to help. Believe me, i have such curly hair for yuears and i couldn't beleive my eyes when i had it done. You have to like pin striaght hair b/c that it how it is, but it is so worth it!!!!

JMO: I would honestly consult another hair salon. I can't imagine anyone suggesting relaxing versus TR. Relaxing utilizes the chemicals to do the job, where TR utilizes a lot lesser in chemicals and depends on ionic heat to straighten. Relaxing also can burn you hair off. TR is a lot less harsh.

Re: NWR ~Japanese Hair Straightening
Here's exaclty how my hair salon straightens my hair:
1) Dries my hair straight with a blow dryer and brush. 2) Applies a "gel" type of formula to every piece of hair. (as if you're getting your hair colored) 3) I then sit under a dryer that has water in it (like a humidifier) for about 30 minutes 4) They wash my hair. 5) Then, they blow dry my hair with a blow dryer, and then inch by inch with a flat iron until it's perfectly straight. 6) Apply another type of formula to every piece of hair. 7) Sit under an actual dryer (no water this time) for about 20 minutes. 8) Wash my hair out again. 9) Blow dry it w/out a flat iron - takes about 10 minutes. and ta-da...done!
