I tried it like a month ago... my hair is really curley. I thought about doing it for a long time, like you a was really nervous. So I got it done... and i dunno my hair is still pretty curley, just easier to blow dry. I paid $530.00. Its not bad to try, but don't be upset if it doesnt work.

Funny this thread is here today. I just had my hair done today by my salon and I was talking to them about the straightening. My hair is really super fine and wavy in certain places. My colorist and my hairdresser both said no way to the straightening. They instead suggested for my hair the relaxing. First, since I am highlighted, they recommend some deep vitamin treatments and then in about 2 weeks getting the relaxing. The relaxing treatments have come a long way. I'll let you know how it turns out. I would like to not worry about the frizzies for the summer.

I had to reply to this post. I have VERY VERY curly hair. It curls from the root and i NEVER EVER wear it curly. I have had Japanese Straightening (aka Thermal reconditioning aka Magic Perm) 3 time in 3 years. I have to say that I do love it!!!!! But there are definately positives and negatives. OK...the first time i got it done i had high lighted my hair about 1 month prior. It did come out very straight but it was VERY dry and stiff for the 1st 3 weeks or so. When i came out of the shower, if i didn't blow dry it it would definately dry pin, pin straight (which my hair never would do), but to get to not to look so dry i would have to blow dry it. I would not have to pull it straight at all, but the blow drier would give it a more 'polished' look and feel. and if i wanted REALLY shiny i would pass the iron through it quickly. So i would say that the first time was not 'wash and go' hair but much much more manageable than what i used to have to deal with. and no matter what the weather was it would stay 'Stick' stright.
The second time i got it done was the best!!!! My highlights at that point was a year old so i didn't get that very dry look at all. in fact, i would say this time i did have wash and go hair. I never even took out the iron and would only use the blow drier so i would not have to go out with wet hair. i loved it so much. I just got it done for the 3rd time in MAy. it came out much better than the first time but not as good as the 2nd. i have to say that this is partly my fault. i got a little careless with it. After you have it done you are supposed to wait a full 48 hours b4 you wash it. you can't put it behind your ears or even put it back lightly at all b/c you will leave a mark and if you wash it too soon, it might not take as well. I waited about 2 days to wash it, but the previous time i wait 3-4 and this time b/c i had work during that time, i found myself putting my hair behind my ear constantly. So a a result, when i let it air dry there are some 'imperfections'. but nothing that the blow drier doesn't take care of. So now i do have to dry it but it takes me about 20 minutes as opposed to 1 hr of blow drying and 20 minutes of straightening b4 i had the thermal reconditioning done. so for me it is so worth it. It stays sooooooo straight even in the most humid and rainy weather, which no one can believe b/c even with the slightest humidity, my curly hair would frizz so much b4 the TR. If your hair grows fast, your roots will grow in fast and they will be curly. some people have said it grows in less curly, but i have not found that to be true. Mine are the same as they were b4. Also, for the 1st 2-4 weeks your hair tends to be hard, but it WILL soften and feel normal again. Trust me, b/c i was sooo worried about that. In fact, it starts to look the best 1 month after getting it done. SO i am planning to d it again about 1.5 months b4 my wedding. I do plan to wear my hair all up for the wedding and it is totally possible to put curling irons and hot styling tools to it as long as you wait about 1 month they say and as long as you do not do it a lot. So if you have a wedding hairstlye that it up in mind, don't worry, you can do it. If anyone has anymore questions feels free to FM me. I would love to help. Believe me, i have such curly hair for yuears and i couldn't beleive my eyes when i had it done. You have to like pin striaght hair b/c that it how it is, but it is so worth it!!!!

JMO: I would honestly consult another hair salon. I can't imagine anyone suggesting relaxing versus TR. Relaxing utilizes the chemicals to do the job, where TR utilizes a lot lesser in chemicals and depends on ionic heat to straighten. Relaxing also can burn you hair off. TR is a lot less harsh.

Here's exaclty how my hair salon straightens my hair:

1) Dries my hair straight with a blow dryer and brush.
2) Applies a 'gel' type of formula to every piece of hair. (as if you're getting your hair colored)
3) I then sit under a dryer that has water in it (like a humidifier) for about 30 minutes
4) They wash my hair.
5) Then, they blow dry my hair with a blow dryer, and then inch by inch with a flat iron until it's perfectly straight.
6) Apply another type of formula to every piece of hair.
7) Sit under an actual dryer (no water this time) for about 20 minutes.
8) Wash my hair out again.
9) Blow dry it w/out a flat iron - takes about 10 minutes. and ta-da...done!

I've been really considering doing it... my hair has been sooooooooo frizzy & unmanageable this whole summer.

Seriously, reconsider relaxing. Burnt all my hair off. Its still breaking off two months later. Looks like crap. Frizzy beyond belief, dry adn brittle. I used to have supersoft hair.

There are places that you can go to to have it done temporarily to see if you will like it . The permanent process does not do well on everyones hair type and can be a very expensive thing to get into. If you really like it for the wedding you can have it blown out that way again and it will last. I have worked in a salon and have seen the good as well as the bad depending on hair type.

I don't see why not. honestly, my hair is fine, thin, tight curls and very dry. I had the process done two months ago, and no complaints here. I do use keratese products such as the recharger and for fine dry hair deep conditioner. I got a consultation first and they tell you what to expect with your type of hair. Good luck!

I think it depends on the hair type. I'm no expert but due to having processed hair, dyed, constantly blow drying it and using the flat iron, surely was scared to get the japanese straightening done. I went two different persons, including my own hair dresser. we first tried a mild relaxer, she used something that smelled good, and felt like conditioner, worked well on my hair. However, months later I decided to go all the way and get done. Also, if you're hair is just wavy you won't need the japanese process. Have consultations and see what you get from the professionals. I chickened out of doing the JS and did a relaxer. My hair went from tight spiral curls to stightly wavy after doing it. I am so glad I didn't do the JS cause my roots are growing in soooo curly and if my hair was pin straight, it would look funny. I went to Cactus salon and my hair feels healthy and soft, not damaged at all. The reason I didn't do the JS is because I was afraid of what my roots would look like growning in. I have really curly hair though.

I have curly to frizzy hair and considered this. After a lot of research I decided against it b/c I didn't want to be the one person who had there hair fall out. And you cannot curl your hair or wear it in an updo with ringlits for your wedding. I just had my hair done at a salon and they ironed my hair stick straight. Also, hair dye or a clear gloss dye will help get your hair straight if you decide to iron it. Hope this helps.
